The new administration utility, IIS 7.5 Manager, is an enhanced tool for managing the Web server. Its updated GUI makes server administration easy with its logically organized, task-based interface allowing administrators to perform familiar tasks easily while also accessing significant new capabilities.
Database Manager allows you to easily manage your databases within the IIS 7.5 Manager, both locally and through remote administration. Database Manager reads the list of connection strings stored in the configuration system for a given object and pre-loads them in the Database Manager Connections tree view where they can be expanded and managed.
The Windows PowerShell Provider for IIS 7.5 expands the functionality of Windows PowerShell, allowing IT professionals and hosters to easily automate complex IIS 7.5 administration tasks, increasing the productivity of administrators. Performing regular tasks such as creating Web sites, enabling request tracing, or performing other routine operations become trivial with the use of this provider.
The AppCmd consolidated utility is used for efficiently accessing IIS 7.5 configuration through the command line, allowing automated server management tasks like creating sites or virtual directories, without having to write complex code. AppCmd is a powerful management tool for IIS deployments on all version of Windows Server 2008 R2, and may be especially useful in managing Server Core installations.
With support for shared configuration, IIS 7.5 allows administrators to create one configuration file that can be used to set the configuration settings for multiple servers from a single network share. When the configurations file changes, each IIS 7.5 instance recycles only the affected parts of the system.
Administrators can easily move customer sites from one server to another, implement convenient backup plans, and reduce overall downtime.
The ASP.NET API has also been expanded to allow more control over request processing than was previously possible. The ability to plug directly into the server pipeline allows ASP.NET modules to replace, run before, or run after any IIS functionality.
IIS 7.5 includes a new WMI provider that allows WMI developers to take advantage of the new IIS 7.5 features. The WMI provider allows for automating management tasks with scripts written in .NET or VBScript.
