Then we'll implement the solution that's right for you, reducing the cost and complexity of your computing infrastructure so financial resources and personnel are freed up for more strategic initiatives. Contact us to discuss how we can help with your Microsoft Virtual Server-based virtualization deployments.

Customer Evidence:
After providing one of our clients with a server consolidation study and Virtual Server pilot implementation, Berbee assisted them with a build out and migration to the new Microsoft Virtual Server environment.
This company, like many companies today, is experiencing a proliferation of servers across their Information Technology infrastructure. As the number of servers grows, the amount of time necessary to maintain and manage these systems also increases. In addition to the initial capital expenditure for hardware and software, each additional server carries additional operating costs related to systems management, data center space, power and cooling. A primary goal for this client was to lower hardware costs, shorten deployment time and improve the disaster recovery and backup processes.
Berbee studied the company's x86-based servers at one data center location consisting of 345 Windows systems. Based on the data collected, Berbee provided recommendations utilizing Berbee's proven virtualization model for server consolidation. Berbee determined 227 servers as candidates for virtualization using Microsoft Virtual Server. The recommendations indicated how the current server infrastructure load could be handled by 24 3.0 GHz Dual-Core 2-way systems, 16 3.66 GHz 4-way systems, 16 3.0 GHz Dual-Core 4-way systems, or 8 3.0 GHz DC 8-way systems. The recommendation also provided details on present value reduction of 80% of total operating costs over the course of three years. These figures gave the company financial justification for their Virtual Server project.
Following the consolidation study, Berbee assisted the company with the build out of a Microsoft Virtual Server Dual-Core 4-way system and assisted with migration of the first round of virtualization candidates to the new environment. Berbee also assisted with a process and strategy to continue migrating additional servers to Virtual Server.

Customer Evidence:
With three aging servers running line of business applications in a Windows NT Server 4.0 environment supporting 50 users, the issues they faced were:
• reliability and maintainability of the aging server hardware.
• insufficient server disk space had resulted in 'ad hoc' departmental file shares proliferating on client systems.
• administrator had to "jump through hoops" to accomplish tape backups given the drive capacity and time available.
• the need for a cost effective way to gradually migrate to current versions of their LOB applications on new hardware and operating systems.
To resolve the problems, they implemented a new highly redundant server with Windows Server 2003 and Virtual Server 2005 R2. The three Windows NT Server 4.0 systems were migrated to virtual machines through a P2V process. Also, a new integrated backup process was implemented.
First and foremost, the customer now has peace of mind that their business is running on reliable and maintainable equipment. The administrator and users benefited from greatly improved performance, increased disk space, and the remote management capabilities provided by Virtual Server. HP Systems Insight Manager Server Migration Pack was used for the P2V migrations. Also, Symantec Backup Exec was used as the basis of the integrated backups.

GEURTS-ITGEURTS-IT

GEURTS-IT B.V’s client had a total of 45 server machines which included: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Servers, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Servers, Microsoft Windows Virtual Servers, Microsoft Exchange 2003 servers in a cluster, Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server, Microsoft SQL 2000 and 2005 databases, Microsoft Host Integration Server, and more. One key issue they wanted to address was reducing the total cost of ownership and Window Server Packs. After the migration from 45 server machines to 16 Microsoft virtual servers, they were able to lower costs for administration and backups, as well as provide a higher availability of the production environment (99.999). VMware ESX I3 was the other virtual solution that was evaluated however; local engineers did not have enough knowledge to work with ESX Server.

Customer Evidence:
Our customer had three main issues that were addressed with virtualization:
• Server consolidation
• Server standardization and service provisioning
• Development and staging enviornment hosting for development

We implemented a Microsoft Virtual Server environment with the customer who was already very entrenched in the Microsoft stack. We were able to save the customer license fee money by recommending the free Virtual Server-based virtualization solution. The customer was able to consolidate serveral physical servers back to virtual machines and were provided a standardized 'base' virtualization image to help foster a standardized server configuration and the developers were able to have a new development and staging environment without new hardware appropriation.

Customer Evidence:
One of Newport Communications’ clients had the challenge of gaining more storage space without increasing costs. They had five Microsoft Virtual Servers hosted on other Microsoft technologies’ such as: Microsoft Windows Server Terminal Services, Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager, Microsoft Active Directory, Windows Server Update Services 3.0, Microsoft SQL Server 2005, Microsoft Internet Information Services 6.0, Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0, Microsoft Domain Naming System, and Microsoft Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. With the demand to stock more services while maintaining the same number of servers, the best solution was the virtualization with Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 SP1 R2.
After evaluating VmWare Server and VmWare Workstation, they’ve decided Microsoft Virtual Server was the best of breed with their wide range of LOB applications. By the way they stored servers at the appropriate controlled room temperature, adding more servers due to their increased services would sky rocket their costs on hardware and IT environment. Not only did hosting machines on virtual servers save them money, but increased productivity and server performance. The virtualization allows them to restart a server and more particularly, a service, without restarting other servers and services. Lastly, they have determined Microsoft Virtual Server has reduced network traffic since it stays inside the server.

Customer Evidence:
Disaster recovery
A global conglomerate client wanted to look into Microsoft Virtual Server and the possibility of moving over some Microsoft SQL Server, Active Directory, and plant floor (web based production software) to virtual servers. NuSoft first assisted to setup virtual servers in the client's production test domain to better understand the performance issues that they were mostly concerned about. NuSoft setup ten virtual servers running many of the client's production applications and moved forward with the testing. We found that the performance hit was negligible. Based on the standard dual and quad processor servers the client used, the performance for running virtual servers was a loss of only about 15% with a greater RAM requirement of 2 GB per server. From a disaster recovery view, virtual servers recovered 50% quicker than their present server recovery plan. This was a very successful test for this customer. There are now a number of Microsoft Virtual Servers taking over utility and gateway roles in the client's network.
Server/Desktop Migration Assistance
A tier one automotive supplier client was moving from a mixed Microsoft Active Directory, Novell NetWare and Windows NT 4.0 environment to a completely standardized Active Directory and Windows Server 2003 R2 environment. NuSoft, working with this customer, are doing a 17,000 user 150 site migration worldwide. The following gives brief details as to how NuSoft have utilized Microsoft Virtual Server 2005.
1. Lab - ten dual homed physical servers loaded with Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 and a switched network consisting of three VLANS. Through the use of Virtual Server, as well as the VLANS that were provided to us, NuSoft were able to create a virtualized lab environment which simulated three Windows 2003 Active Directory sites.
2. Domain Controllers – WAN Bandwidth constraints have limited NuSoft from migrating sites to Windows Server 2003 and Active Directory. NuSoft have noticed that clients with lower WAN bandwidth would experience slower logon times when authenticating to a remote Domain Controller. Through the use of virtualization software, NuSoft have been able to install a virtual Domain Controller at the sites prior to performing the migration.

Customer Evidence
Mutual Assurance is a small, regional provider of insurance services based in Richmond, Virginia. SyCom Technologies worked with this local 80-user insurance company to implement Microsoft Virtual Server to address the firm's need to consolidate the number of physical servers and establish more effective contingency planning. SyCom engineers designed a comprehensive project approach to transition the firm from their current environment to a virtual environment utilizing Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2.
The firm subsequently was able to reduce their infrastructure from 7 physical servers down to 2 servers running virtual sessions. This has resulted in an approximate 60% reduction in the cost of administration and maintenance without realizing any degradation in application performance. The consolidation now enables the firm's system administrator to focus less on routine maintenance and concentrate on more strategic IT issues.
Upon completion of the server consolidation aspect of this project, SyCom worked with our client to design and implement a virtual business continuity solution. The firm's previous solution required having a number of physical servers located at a remote disaster recovery site. Once a year, the firm spent 40 hours simulating a disaster and testing the effectiveness of backup and recovery. Under this scenario, over half the time was spent patching and bringing servers up-to-date and the firm had a low degree of confidence in the overall solution. Under a virtualized scenario, the testing time was reduced by 78% and the firm now has a highly efficient and reliable means for business continuity.

Customer Evidence:
The client had a legacy Windows NT 4.0 Server running an important business application. As the application was critical for the business, it was necessary to replace the server hardware. Since NT 4.0 was no longer supported it was discovered that drivers were difficult if not impossible to source for new server hardware. Hence, the problem was to move the legacy NT 4.0 server and application to new hardware in keeping with the clients IT hardware policy. A Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 was installed onto one of the client's Microsoft Windows 2003 Servers. The NT 4.0 Server software and legacy application was then loaded onto that Microsoft Virtual Server. Checks were then made to ensure that the application was running correctly. The NT 4.0 Server legacy application is running better than before and the old hardware that it was previously installed on has been replaced. Worries regarding business continuity and disaster recovery had been overcome as the process was repeatable, should the application ever need to be installed on a different hardware platform. No special proprietary tools were required and the application migration went very smoothly. Other solutions including VMware were examined, however it was decided that there were no benefits in installing third party non-Microsoft applications. Business continuity was extremely important and there was a risk in using third party software, such as the effect on Windows and security updates on the third party software.
