How to Join Windows Storage Server to a Windows Small Business Server Domain

Joining Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 to a Windows Small Business Server 2003 domain provides the additional flexibility required to meet your growing business needs. Windows Storage Server can act as a dedicated file and print server, freeing up resources on your Windows Small Business Server. And, as a network-attached appliance capable of scaling to multiple terabytes of storage, it can also be used to store and protect your organization' critical documents.

This article shows you how to join Windows Storage Server 2003 to a Windows Small Business Server domain by using the Windows Storage Server Web user interface.

Note: If you want to join Windows Storage Server to the Windows Small Business Server domain from a Small Business Server machine, go to the Windows Start menu, click Help and Support, and then Search for Join a domain : System. Follow the instructions as detailed in the help menu (not shown).

How to Join by Using the Windows Storage Server Web User Interface

1.

Follow the original equipment manufacturer's instructions on how to open the Windows Storage Server Web user interface. The interface should resemble the one shown below.

Click the Network tab to access the Identification tab.

On the Server Identity page, type the name of the Windows Storage Server machine in the Server name text box, and then select Member of: Domain. Type the name of the Small Business Server domain, as well as the domain administrator's user name and password.

Note: The DNS suffix is not typically required information. (For more information on name resolution, refer to Windows Help Topics.)

Click the Interfaces tab to verify that NAS has an IP address in your Small Business Server network range.

Click OK to restart Windows Storage Server and to implement the changes.

After Windows Storage Server is restarted, the administrator can manage users and shares, and regulate storage use from the NAS appliance, as shown below. For more information on managing the NAS appliance storage resources, click the Help tab.
