Hello, all, and welcome to today's chat on: Microsoft Tablet PC, the Journal and you

Host MS_John_P says:

We'll be taking questions from the bottom room, so feel free to post them at any time.

Host MS_John_P says:

I'll ask our hosts to introduce themselves now...

Host Guest_Dan_MS says:

Hi, I'm Dan Polivy, a Software Developer for Journal

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

Hi, I'm Kamesh Program Manager for Journal

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says:

Hi, I'm Bethany Borla, Product Manager for Tablet PC

Host MS_John_P says:

And I'm John Perry, MVP lead for C++, and a few other areas :-)

Host MS_John_P says:

I think we've got a few questions stacked up already, and our hosts will start working on some answers right away -

Host MS_John_P says:

mean while, feel free to posts your questions in the bottom window!

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says:

nw|gameguy : Q: will the second generation tablet PCs have cd/dvd rom drives?

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says:

A: The inclusion of cd/dvd drives are left up to individual OEM manufacturers to determine.

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says:

Peter : Q - sorry if I missed this earlier (just joined) is there any significant update to the TabletPC planned this year?

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says:

A: We have not made any announcements regarding future updates to the Tablet OS.

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

Q: What are the next features for Journal? I'd like to see better shape recognition so that you could, say, draw a table freehand and even if it lines are skewed, properly turn it into a chart which you can then input data into

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

A: We are looking at a couple of shape recognition and list/table detection features

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

Q: Are there plans for opening Journal more for programmers to interact with Journal?

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

A: At this time we dont have any specific plans of exposing Journal directly, however you could still leverage the Tablet SDK and get a lot of its functionality

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says:

Peter : Q - Bethany - Is it correct to assume that when MS offers an update/upgrade that I'll be able to load it on any current tabletpc model?

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says:

A: Specific upgrade paths and pricing are determined and closer to the time of availability.

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

Q: will future tablet PCs come bundled with microsoft onenote?

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

A: Again that's up to the OEMs to decide

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

Q: how do you turn a journal entry into text?

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

A: Just select the ink that you want to convert and then choose "Copy As Text" under the "Edit" menu

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

Q: i understand the OEMs can include it, but i'm wondering will it come with ALL tablet pcs.

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

A: At this point the current version of the Tablet OS does not include OneNote and we dont know anything about any future versions

Host Guest_Dan_MS says:

A: As a followup to turning an entry into text, you can only convert a page at a time. We are aware this is not ideal and are looking into improving the experience.

Host Guest_Dan_MS says:

Q: Lora : Are there plans to improve the search for text within Journal? (Journal currently selects block of text vs highlight indiv words)

Host Guest_Dan_MS says:

A: Currently, when you search for ink, it highlights the ink word. If the result is in a textbox, it selects the entire textbox. We will take this into consideration for the future.

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

Q: In terms of drawing, journal doesn't have the finesse of Corel's Tablet PC app (I forget the name, Grafigo possibly). But Grafigo is, apart from that, feature poor. Do you accept that in terms of drawing it is better and any plans to make that...

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

A: The primary scenario which Journal focusses is Note taking

Host Guest_Dan_MS says:

Q: dhopton_MVP : is there a way for an UK keyboard layout to be displayed with the TIP

Host Guest_Dan_MS says:

A: Not currently; however, it will be available with the MUIRP release. We're investigating ways to make this available to end users.

Host MS_John_P says:

For anyone just joining us, we have some people from the tablet PC team here, talking about Microsoft Tablet PC, the Journal and You, until about 4:00.

Host MS_John_P says:

Feel free to post your questions in the bottom window.

Host MS_John_P says:

We have information on the RPC Shutdowns issue at http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

Q: Will Journal ever be bundled with any other flavor of XP?.

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

A: At this point Journal is available only on the Tablet OS

Host Guest_Dan_MS says:

Q: Jason_489859 : can you record sound or add pictures to journal, Onenote you can

Host Guest_Dan_MS says:

A: You can add pictures to Journal via the Insert menu, however we do not support audio recording.

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

Q: What is the purpose of OneNote when there's journal?

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

A: One Note is focussed on general note taking that includes text, ink... but Journal focusses mainly on ink

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

Q: Will there be future TabletPC OS's to go along with Longhorn or BlackComb?

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

A: We dont know the answer to that this point.

Host Guest_Dan_MS says:

Q: Lora : We've noticed that when an object is selected in Journal, the cursor movement degrades based on the size of the region selected. Will there be a release to improve this?

Host Guest_Dan_MS says:

A: We're always looking to improve peformance; however, I cannot comment on any future releases.

Host Guest_Dan_MS says:

Q: blackinkbottle : Will Journal or OneNote ever support recongising scanned ink from paper? Kind of temporal information recovery.

Host Guest_Dan_MS says:

A: We have no plans to support this in Journal.

Host Guest_Dan_MS says:

Q: Mark : So is Journal the Outlook Express to OneNote's Outlook, if you see what I mean?

Host Guest_Dan_MS says:

A: Journal is a digital pad of paper: it's meant to be a simple and efficient way of taking and managing notes on a Tablet.

Host Guest_Dan_MS says:

A2: OneNote is more of a full featured note-taking/research tool, incorporating A/V, text, ink, etc.

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says:

Mark : Q: Is there any plans to compartmentalise the Tablet PC aspects in Xp Tablet edition. So that, for example, you could use the same XP dist you use for the rest of the PCs/laptops and then add in the extra Tablet PC functionality via an MSI or oth

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says:

A: We have a whitepaper that addresses single image deployment. It can be located at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=8c63cc47-f2a7-416f-98eb-cb127d7d328a&DisplayLang=en.

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

Q: does Outlook for Tablet support the data encryption to exchange?

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

A: There is no special version of Outlook for Tablet currently

Host Guest_Dan_MS says:

Q: Mark_L_Ferguson_MVP : One feature I would like to see added to Journal is an item on the insert menu for a 'timestamp'

Host Guest_Dan_MS says:

A: Interesting idea; we'll take that under consideration for future releases.

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

Q: Is the tablet PC OS update due this year same as the new MCE or next year ?

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

A: We havent made any announcements regarding this.

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

Q: Do you see Tablets outselling laptops or taking over completely in the future ?

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

A: That definitely seems like a good possibility

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

Q: hello! just a question about the release date of MUIRP ...

Host Guest_kameshd_MS says:

A: We haven't made any annoucements on the release dates.
