Title: Tablet PC and OneNote

Date: 9-9-2003

Newsgroup: Microsoft.public.windows.tabletpc, Microsoft.public.onenote

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: Howdy, I am Mason - a tester with Tablet sustained engineering.

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: Hi, I'm a Program Manager on the Tablet PC Sustained Engineering team.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Hi, I'm Roan Kang, a product manager for OneNote 2003.

Host MS_John_E says: And I'm John Eddy, the Windows XP Shell, IE/OE and Tablet PC MVP Lead and your chat host.

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: Peter : Q - hi all - I'm expecting my new Fujitsu Tablet Pc any day - is there a bunch o patches and udates that I should load first?

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: A: Peter, yes, you should first get all the critical updates from Windows Update. Then go to the Fujitsu support site and see if there are any new downloads.

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: Q: nw|malebolgia : Why should people purchase a Tablet PC?

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: A: Try this link - its a great Tablet overview. http://www.bcentral.com/articles/enbysk/162.asp?cobrand=msn&LID=3800

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: Peter : Q: Anyone try synching up a PocketPC with a TabletPC?

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: A: Not personally, but there should be no problem since the added functionality in Tablet should not affect synching.

Host MS_John_E says: Q: (romamat) for any of the hosts, do you know of a way to synch outoook without microsoft exchange server

Host MS_John_E says: A: I'd recommend hitting slipstick.com to check for an answer to the question. If you can't find anything there, try the Outlook newsgroups which are chock full of helpful MVPs.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: SpencerGoad_MVP, Where does Microsoft see OneNote being placed? Do they see it as a Windows Journal replacement?

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: We find in our customer trials that most customers are migrating to OneNote 2003 from Journal because of the greater functionality and features in OneNote. One way to think about the difference is OneNote is to Journal as Word is to Wordpad.

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: nw|malebolgia : Q: Are gestures going to be incorporated into Tablet PCs?

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: A: How do you mean? Directly on the screen? We can't really discuss future plans, but it would be helpful for us to know what you're looking for.

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: Truistic : Q: Will Windows XP TabletPC OS future editions be backwards compatible with existing hardware and will it be a release from MS or will it be like PocketPC OS where it is up to the OEM to provide a "OS refresh"?

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: A: We can't really discuss future plans as they haven't been made public yet.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: OSUKid7, Will it be legal to install a purchased copy of OneNote on both a desktop and a TbletPC? I would like to take notes on the TabletPC, but then edit it and revise them on my desktop.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: Yes, the license that you purchase for OneNote 2003 will allow you to install it on two PCs. You can then use it on both your desktop and Tablet PC.

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: Roger : Q: I have a few developer questions if you don't mind. When will the next SDK come out?

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: A: Nothing's been announced yet.

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: Q: Will the printng functionality of Journal be added to Onenote? Specifically the ability to print from any application into Onenote and have it appear as a sheet like in journal.

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: A: In the first version of OneNote you will not be able to print to OneNote like you can in Journal.

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: DennisRice : Dev ? - Will there be any SDK or VBA functionality for OneNote?

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: A: The first version of One Note does not expose any API's

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: nw|malebolgia : Q: VictoriaHamilton_MS: When I say gestures I mean something that can be drawn and link to programs/commands?

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: A: I see. We can't really talk about future plans.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: Sean, I am aware of that, but that does not answer my question. Will the print functionality be added to Onenote?

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: The "Print to OneNote" feature is something we are definitely considering for future releases of OneNote.

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: DerekLL2 : @nw|malebolgia : Whaat? Gestures? ... Hmm...

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: A: www.Smartgesture.com has a product for doing gestures

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: Q: Truistic : Is MS looking into making the handwriting recognition in the TabletPC "trainable"?

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: A: We're not able to comment on future versions, but do appreciate your feedback.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q:(Peter) Are there any special tools on the tabletpc for the connection to a paocketpc - say like OneNote?

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: Version 1.0 of OneNote does not sync with the PocketPC.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: (Truistic) Will OneNote get Corel Graphigo type drawing capabilities in future versions, like line straightening, shape creation....not a full blown version of Visio or even a Visio-lite, but jsut some features to make drawings better than freehand

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: Drawing tools are a feature that we are considering for future releases of OneNote.

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: Roger : Q: Dev question - I would like to see a couple more development controls. Like an inkable combo box. What are the chances of these being developed?

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: A: The SDK team cannot comment on future versions, but is always looking to make improvements

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: (drfrank) I can't find any way to open my journal files in OneNote. Is there any?

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: There is no way to open a journal file in version 1.0 of OneNote 2003. You can, of course, copy and paste notes from Journal into OneNote.

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: Sean : Q: Will a onenote file viewer be made available similar to the journal viewer?

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: A: There is no viewer in v1. However as with Journal, OneNote files are rendered in HTML and can be viewed by non onenote users.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: (DerekLL2) What is OneNote? [briefly]

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: OneNote 2003 is a new digital note-taking program in the Office System that helps you to capture and organize your notes and ideas more effectively. For more info, check out www.microsoft.com/office/onenote.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: (SpencerGoad_MVP) Are there any plans for allowing ink from other Windows Applications to be copied into OneNote and kept as ink (instead of images or text)?

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: That is something we are considering for future releases of OneNote.

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: SpencerGoad_MVP : Q: Are there any plans for allowing ink from other Windows Applications to be copied into OneNote and kept as ink (instead of images or text)?

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: A: Currently, if you paste between OneNote and Journal, it will paste as a graphic since the ink is different.

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: Sean : Q: Feature Request: When pasting an image from a website. It puts in a reference with the pasted image but they show up as two seperate Onenote "objects". Grouping these together by default would be great.

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: A: Thanks for your comments. We appreciate the feedback.

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: Roger : Q: Dev Question - Is there a better forum to ask about development issues or send ideas/enhancements?

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: A: The microsoft.public.windows.tabletpc.developer newsgroup is very active

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: (Sean) Is there a size limit on .one files? Or a recommended size limit to keep them under?

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: There is no size limit on .one files. However, as you incorporate more and more notes in one section, it will start to slow down access to that section. After some time, you will probably find it practical to separate information into another section

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: and to keep related sections in folders (File-->New-->Folder)

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: (drfrank) Yeah, but then they just show up as pictures. I want to import the handwriting.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: Understood. That is actually technically quite complex (due to the way Journal recognizes everything as ink and OneNote must distinguish between ink, text, and other data types). This is something we are considering for future releases of OneNote.

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: drfrank Q: The thing that annoys me the most about OneNote is having to tap before I start writing. (When I don't do this, the first letter of the word I'm writing is frequently just erased.) Was this fixed in the RTM version?

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: A: The RTM version is much cleaner

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: Q: Roger re: Tabletpcdeveloper.com

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: A: We are evaluating what the appropriate forum is for all ms-driven developer content (tpcdeveloper vs. msdn). This is we really need to find an answer to. In the meantime, tabletpcbuzz is a great resource.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: (Sean) Faeture Request: When pasting an image from a website. It puts in a reference with the pasted image but they show up as two seperate Onenote "objects". Grouping these together by default would be great.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: Thanks for the great feedback Sean.

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: nw|malebolgia : Q: Why not market the tablet PC towards graphic professionals for images?

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: A: The Tablet PC is currently aimed at all sorts of knowledge workers. However, graphics professionals usually want faster processers and bigger screens which means decreased mobility.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: (DerekLL2) Does OneNote have an outline function/format?

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: Yes, OneNote has outline functionality. You can press "Tab" at the beginning of a new line to indent and "Backspace" to "outdent." You can also choose to view only certain levels of your outline (View-->Hide Levels Below)

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: (swcruz) How will the licensing for OneNote work?

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: Similar to other Office products such as Visio. You can find out more about licensing for OneNote and other MS products at www.microsoft.com/licensing

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: Roger : Q: bethanyb_ms re tabletpcbuzz - I have not seen much there regarding development issues. Great for news though. Also, what happened to the 3 tablets MS was giving away on tabletpcdeveloper?

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: A: Can you clarify which tablets you are referring to? Prizes for the Does your code think in ink contest?

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: (DennisRice) I saw OneNote available for Ed. market at $49. Any schools doing big OneNote pilots?

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: OneNote will be at a number of universities. For more information, visit the OneNote Web site at www.microsoft.com/office/onenote/education.

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: Roger: Q: TPCD dev contest fullfilment

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: A: The contest ended in June. We have announced the winners from the eligble prize pool and are in the process of fulfilling them.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: (Sean) Where are the list numbering / bullet numbering "styles" stored in OneNote (are the like Word List Templates)? Can the numbering schemes be modified during deployment?

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: All of the styles are static and not stored in a template. They cannot be edited in V1.0 of OneNote.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: (Truistic) Developer question. Is OneNote written in C#/.NET or is it unmanaged C++? Are there automation interfaces for OneNote?

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: OneNote V1.0 is written in C++. There are no APIs exposed in version 1.0 of the product. We are very interested in the type of solutions that you would like to build on OneNote so that we can expose the proper APIs in future releases.

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: WNewquay : Q - any restrictions / differences between Education version and Full Retail?

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: A: The academic version is only for students and can only be purchased at campus bookstores.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: (ChrisH_MVP) Could we clarify the licensing of OneNote? Will it be like Office - one desktop, one Tablet (portable)?

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: Yes, OneNote is licensed like Office--one installation on a portable PC (Tablet or laptop) and one on a desktop.

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: Q: Roger : Dennis: Thanks. I've posted there a few times and not really got much of a a response. I don't think we are doing anything advanced yet answers are hard to come by, but will keep trying.

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: A: The microsoft.public.windows.tabletpc.developer newsgroup has had 3833 unique threads and 372 unanswered threads since it started (including announcements)

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: A: can you direct me to a specific post?

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: Q: ChrisH_MVP : Mason_MSFT: How many of the "unanswered" are off-topic? That happens, too.

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: A: quite right. I don't have an exact number on those

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: zzz : Q - My TC1000 start beeping loudly today, while I was taking notes with Journal, anyone has similar problem?

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: A: Haven't seen that myself - only beeps I've gotten are for low battery.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: (AndyVanosdale_MVP) Will the Education version be sold in retail stores like Office for Students and Teachers?

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: To clarify, there is an Academic Edition of OneNote that is sold in university campus bookstores only. There is no Student & Teacher edition of OneNote available in normal retail stores.

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: WNewquay : Q - VictoriaHamilton - Any functional difference? also do you have expected price at Canadian Universities>

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: A: No functional differences between Academic and regular retail. You'll have to call your local university bookstore for pricing.

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: Q: zzz : Q- can one print OneNOte pages with lines?

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: A: Yes, go to view and choose add "rule lines"

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: nFinity : Q Any plans to add virtual printer support to OneNote?

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: A: If you mean something like the Journal Note Writer (print driver), OneNote doesn't include that.

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: Q: Roger : Q: General Marketing - Is Microsoft planning something for the 1 year anniversary?

Host Guest_bethanyb_ms says: A: You'll have to wait and see :)

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: Q: Roger : Mason_MSFT: Look for Databinding and InkEdit. It was posted Sept 4.

Host Guest_Mason_MSFT says: A: thanks, Roger. I will follow up there after the chat

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: zzz : Q - No one had continous loud beeps while using their TC1000, the Tablet still functions, just the loud beep won't go away until I turn it off.

Host Guest_VictoriaHamilton_MS says: A: I haven't heard about a problem like that. I suggest you call Compaq.

Host MS_John_E says: Q WNewquay - OT - sorry - why am I seeing two windows into this chat (and they are not quite the same?)

Host MS_John_E says: A The back end of the system is two seperate chat rooms. The upper window is just for the hosts so that when answers get posted to your questions, they are easier to find. The lower window is for everyone and where you and other people can post questions

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: (SpencerGoad_MVP) Regarding -"can one print OneNOte pages with lines?" Q: Bethany... that allows you to see lines, but it doesn't actually print them.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: I believe that in the RTM version of OneNote, you can go to File-->Page Setup-->Show Rule Lines and that should enable you to print the rule lines. But we will post an update to the OneNote public newsgroup.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: Q: (nFinity) Q - Does the website you posted previously have a list of campus bookstores that will have it? Mine has been terribly uncooperative in answering any questions about OneNote.

Host Guest_Roan_MS says: A: Sorry, thanks for including the full URL--it got cut off. No, unfortunately the list is not available online. You will need to see if your local campus bookstore plans to carry the academic edition of OneNote.
