Start of Chat
Andrew Brown [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: I have a question about xp for an expert if they could help
A: The chat topic for the next hour is the Tablet PC - is your question related to the Tablet PC?
frankgo_ms (Expert):
Q: Is there any compatability issue with MS java and Sun Java Applets on tablet PC?
A: Tablet PC runs the Windows XP Operating system with additional support for the Pen and Digital Ink, there should be no difference in compatibility between the two.
SpencerGoad_MVP (Expert):
Q: Why Excel spreadsheets not printing out completely -missing or compressed info or "double- printing" on lines in tablet PC
A: I'm not entirely sure what this could be, are you trying to print to the Windows Journal printer or to a traditional paper printer?
SpencerGoad_MVP (Expert):
Q: traditional paper printer
A: Ok, like WNewquay said, I'm guessing this is not a Tablet PC specific issue. I'd try re-installing your printer driver, see if that helps anything. Do you have this problem from any other programs, or just Excel?

Q: If I have an old Toshiba Tablet PC will installing Windows XP SP2 add all the Tablet PC 2005 features or do I need to get a new distribution of Tablet PC 2005?
A: Yes, XP2 will install Tablet PC bits if it detects it’s being installed onto a Tablet PC - Have fun 2005 is real cool…
SpencerGoad_MVP (Expert):
Q: Well interestingly When I'm writting, and lift up the pen from the screen, it keeps on " writting" even though the pen is not touching the screen , in any word processor, is there any settings to change?
A: This was actually a known problem with some of the pens that came with the first HP TC1000 tablets. I'd suggest calling HP/Compaq support. They were able to replace the pen for my TC1000 when I had that same issue.
frankgo_ms (Expert):
Q: My Tablet used to run fine with 256mb. After SP2, I experienced an annoying slowdown in response, and I have to fight with tcserver and TIP daily. Any suggestions, while I save up for the additional memory, are welcome.
A: We have heard that before personally I think you should consider moving up to 512 if you can prices are coming down dramatically for new memory. A defrag might be helpful too.
Andrew Brown [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: It is about time for a Pocket PC 2004/2005 release. Are some of the Tablet PC Ink etc features being migrated to Pocket PC to enhance its ability to handle ink?
A: Please note that we cannot comment on unannounced products, and in some cases may not be able to discuss specific aspects of announced products. This chat is primarily to discuss questions or issues with our current products. Thanks!
frankgo_ms (Expert):
Q: Defragging is not very effective - still lots of red...I've pared down services, as per Black Viper's page
A: The defrag tools that ship with Windows are ok but there are products out their which do a more complete job and perform defrag on a regular basis. I can’t recommend but you might want to check out http://www.tabletpc2.com and look at Linda’s List
SpencerGoad_MVP (Expert):
Q: Are there any devices on the market that bring Tablet PC pen capability to a desktop in the form of an side tablet or something?
A: Well, yes and no. :) Wacom (http://www.wacom.com) does make tablet writing pads that you can connect to you desktop. And if you have one of these, and a MSDN subscription you can install the Tablet PC OS and get a tablet like experience, but of course, wired to your desk. There is no real "out of the box" solution for easily setting this up though.
Andrew Brown [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: when my friend connects his Tablet PC with XP join a W2K domain. He received the error
Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again" Any ideas?
A: This doesn't sound an issue specific to the Tablet PC OS (and it is not a known issue as far as we're aware). Do any other PCs (Tablet or otherwise) exhibit this behavior?
frankgo_ms (Expert):
Q: I'll be in the market for a Tablet PC in the next few months. What new tablets will be coming out in the future?
A: The best advice we can give you is to check out tabletpc.com for new information or visit some of our amazing 3rd party community sites which you can find links to from our location. Check out http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/tabletpc/howtobuy/default.mspx
Or http://msdn.microsoft.com/mobility/tabletpc/resources/community/default.aspx for a list of some of our community sites.

Q: Once I max out my RAM, I'm thinking of getting Virtual PC. The guy at the computer store is concerned, but I'm pretty sure I saw that one MVP was using virtual on her Tablet (Cheryl or Terri, maybe?). Anyone tried it?
A: Yes, this should work fine. I run Virtual PC on my Toshiba M200 with 1Gb of RAM all the time. I've run everything from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 Server to Windows Longhorn developer releases on it.

Q: Once I max out my RAM, I'm thinking of getting Virtual PC. The guy at the computer store is concerned, but I'm pretty sure I saw that one MVP was using virtual on her Tablet (Cheryl or Terri, maybe?). Anyone tried it?
A: I might also add though, you do have to watch how much RAM the virtual machine you are running is using. 1Gb of RAM will run most things fine, but you probably don't want to be running a whole lot of graphics intensive stuff in the background or anything.
Andrew Brown [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Just tried to connect only this tablet PC
A: In that case, since again it doesn't seem to be related to the Tablet PC portion of the OS software, I'd suggest trying to connect up a different PC and see if you have the same issue.
Andrew Brown [MSFT] (Moderator):
Hi all. We've got about 20 minutes left. Get those Tablet PC questions in!

minimage - yes, the same

Q: Back to the service trimming issue. When I searched for sites, I found some that were general XP-oriented. I'd like to find a site or two with good tablet-oriented info about paring services. Any thoughts?
A: I don't know of any sites like this specifically. You might try posting to the forums on TabletPCBuzz.com to see if anyone has any ideas. I think it all kinda comes back to having only 256MB of ram though, to really get good performance I'd really reccomend you upgrade that. Also, you mentioned that defrag wasn't working well... could it be you don't have enough extra free space to succesfully complete the defrag?
Andrew Brown [MSFT] (Moderator):
Hi all. We've got about 10 minutes left. Get those questions in!
Andrew Brown [MSFT] (Moderator):
Okay, we'll be ending the Tablet PC chat in 5 minutes. Last chance!
frankgo_ms (Expert):
Q: Does the voice to text work as well as third party voice recognition?
A: It all comes down to the Microphone, the better quality mic the better speech reco works, one exciting new feature we’re seeing on tablets such is array microphone technology, this enables multi reference points and allows you to setup for Narrow (just you) or Wide Band (pick up all ambient info such as a conference).
WNewquay_MVP (Expert):
Q: Does the voice to text work as well as third party voice recognition?
A: Canine, an add-on... I think part of the answer is: It depends on how sophisticated your requirements are. If you are dictating into Word or Notepad, relatively simple, conversational things - the WinXP works fine.
Andrew Brown [MSFT] (Moderator):
