Q: can someone tell me whats up with internet explorer 7it dont work right
A: Hi terri552, Currently IE7 is available as a preview of beta 2. There are still issues that we are working on. we appreciate all the feedback as it helps us prioritise the remaining work for the final release.
David Bristol [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: can someone tell me whats up with internet explorer 7it dont work right
A: For the Player question, you would need to add SMPTE timecodes to the stream.
David Bristol [MSFT] (Expert):
A: You could add the player in a web page and via javascript add or subtract time from the absolute time to make it a relative time.
Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
For those interested in Internet Explorer we have a specific IE Expert Zone chat scheduled for the second Thursday of every month where more of the IE team are available to answer questions. Hope to see some of you there.
David Bristol [MSFT] (Expert):
This is doc'd in the Windows Media Encoder help. I'd start with that
EdwardD [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: how do i stop xp from asking for a password on swithing on the computer
A: Are you talking about turning on the computer?
Fred [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I can't open diff sessions of my multisession cd in Win XP
A: Hi Nakul, Can you provide a little bit more detail on this problem. Windows XP should allow multisession support for your CD.
LanceZ [MSFT] (Moderator):
ask your questions ONCE, and an expert will get to it for you. :) Lots of questions coming in, so please be patient!
KelliZ [MSFT] (Expert):Q: Good afternoon, I recently ran the disk cleanup tool and selected the options for tmp folders and there was also an option for catalog files for the content indexer. I selected that also because that showed maybe more than 1GB, so I chose option to delete
A: I'll look around and see if I can figure out what I can do to help you.
EdwardD [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: how do i stop xp from asking for a password on swithing on the computer
A: If that is what you are talking about, you can go into the User Manager in Control Panel and tell it to change the way you log on. If it has a password associated with it, you can take it away. If you are discussing when you "switch" users, you'll have to do the same thing, but again, both users will not have a password, which has its security concerns.
David Bristol [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Question on Media Player: Is there any way to get time scroller (at bottom of player) to use relative time (say 1:00:05 - 1:01:10) instead of absolute time starting at 0 (say, 0 - 0:01:05 for that same 1m5s video), or is making timestamps my only option?
A: One additional note, you can get the SMPTE timecode out of a WMV stream with the GetCurrentPositionTimecode property.
Fred [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I Can burn multisession cd But cant change volumes and can see the latest volume. i use nero. I was able to change vol in Win98
A: This sounds like a compatibility issue with your Nero software and Windows XP. Have you tried researching this problem on the Nero website?
David Bristol [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Thanks David (B) - any MSFT refernece on SMPTE additions to video streams, or is that external data?
A: Or use the GetCurrentPosition if you are not using SMPTE
Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: can someone tell me whats up with internet explorer 7it dont work right
A: Can you can be specific about what is not working? IE7 is currently available as a preview of beta2 so there are still issues that need work before final release
KelliZ [MSFT] (Expert):Q: I'm running WinXP SP2. While disk cleanup was running, I had error messages about .sys/.dll files being older and insert WinXP setup disk. I clicked the cancel button and windows starting giving me problems, so I reboot. It wouldn't reboot, I've tried Repa
A: When you mean it wouldn't reboot, did it just hang there?
KelliZ [MSFT] (Expert):Q: I've tried running Win Repair in setup, but now setup hangs. I see the WinXP opening screen, but then I get a blank black screen with the mouse
A: Have you tried safe mode? You might be able to do a system restore and see if that fixes your problem.
EdwardD [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Still hopping for a workaround. I have XP Home SP2 installed, want to upgrade to XP Pro. CD I have is from 2001, no SP's. Setup says I cannot do so 'cause XP Pro is older than version I have on computer (XP Home SP2) Any way I can use the XP Pro CD ?
A: Do you have a copy of XPSP2 downloaded? If you do, you can copy the i386 directory and "slipstream" SP2 into it and then use that to create a CD to upgrade it. I'm looking for the article. Give me a second....828930How to integrate software updates into your Windows installation source fileshttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;828930
LanceZ [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: I have a problem that I cant seem to fix. Its an easy one though I think. One of those spyware ad things has taken over my wallpaper on my desktop. How can I get rid of that?
A: I've found that using an anti-spyware application to clean up "hijacks" works well. Microsoft provides "Windows Defender" as a beta. This might work for you. Check it out at http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: i have a strange issue, when i open up the internet explorer and click on help and select the option about internet explorer..... i am not able to see the internet explorer picture and the windows picture, but it is replaced with red x.. any suggestions...
A: The red x means that the image has not been dowloaded successfully so the red x is shown as a placeholder. Does this happen on every web page or just some? Try right clicking on the image and selecting "Show Picture" to force the download of the image again.
EdwardD [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I'm trying to find the listing of "last results" codes for task scheduler in win XP, ie "0x1f"
A: Try downloading err.exe and running err 0x1f for the results:

Q: I have WinXP SP2, IE6 and Internet Explorer keeps freezing up(crashing). I keep getting a window telling me that IE encountered a problem and has to close.
A: Do you have any addons or extensions to IE installed? Removing those first can help. How frequently does this happen? Are there any additional details in the error message?
EdwardD [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Update error 0x8024d007 I have done everything short of reinstalling windows... any ideas?
A: Use that err.exe (see this link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=be596899-7bb8-4208-b7fc-09e02a13696c&DisplayLang=en) but it returns this when run: # for hex 0x8024d007 / decimal -2145071097 WU_E_SETUP_REGISTRATION_FAILED

Please make sure to ask your questions by using the "Ask the Experts" option in the chat window.
Fred [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: how can a virus get into a windows folder and you see it, but you go to registry and you end up chasing it around trying to delaete it
A: Not necessarily a virus, but Spyware often gets installed and runs multiple instances of itself in memory or runs little support apps in memory that detect when someone is trying to delete the main app. It can be very frustrating to try and remove spyware that use this type of fallback technique.
KelliZ [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Hi. I have a problem with MS TV/Video Connection: I use a computer at work with a static IP, which conflicts with MS TV/video Connection's IP. How can I change the IP of the MS TV/Video Connection? Thx
A: I'm not familiar with the MS TV/Video Connection, but I'm going to see what I can do for you. Go to the Start menu and click Run, then type "cmd" and press enter. When the cmd window opens, try typing "ipconfig" then press enter. Does the connection show up in that list?
David Bristol [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is Windows Media Player capable of playing a single channel 16-bit Greyscale video, or only 3 channel - 8,8,8 style?
A: As long as there is a decoder (codec) on the machine that supports the 16-bit greyscale, then the player will play it. However, I don't think there are any greyscale decoders that come with Windows by default.
EdwardD [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why is it that Windows XP doesn't boot up when you take the hardrive to another PC?
A: Due to driver and controller issues. Is is the same disk controller? Have you tried booting up to the CD and doing a "repair" install with the new HDD in the machine? Also, it could be a HAL issue. APM vs. ACPI
Charlie [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why is it that Windows XP doesn't boot up when you take the hardrive to another PC?
A: Is the HW the same on the machine you're trying to move it to?
Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Are there anybody from Microsoft here that actually take part of the Windows development?
A: Many of us here work on Windows Development. I'm a Program Manager on the Internet Explorer Product team and work alongside developers and testers on IE. Part of the Program Managers job is writing specifications and helping keep teh project on track. Currently we're pretty busy working on IE7.
David Bristol [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is Windows Media Player capable of playing a single channel 16-bit Greyscale video, or only 3 channel - 8,8,8 style?
A: There may be some MJPEG codecs that support this that you could install on the machine.
Charlie [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why is it that Windows XP doesn't boot up when you take the hardrive to another PC?
A: Please be sure to respond with another question so I can see it in the question queue. Thanks.
LanceZ [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: nero allows to see volumes but not files in it. there was no help on nero website
A: Unfortunatley issues such as these are up to the vendor to address. In this case, Nero. You will want to contact their tech support which can be found at http://ww2.nero.com/enu/Support.html
Fred [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: are 3d graphic programs and design programs like 3ds max and photoshop going to work with vista or will there have to be new development
A: While we can't provide any specifics about programs working with Windows Vista, I can assure you that, in general, we try as hard as we can to make sure that Application Compatibility is as high as possible with software written for the previous version of Windows.
Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Dave i think you have not got the question right - when i click on help and select about internet explorer, i get the red x mark in that new window, where it shows the version of IE
A: Ah Now I understand Thanks. I've not heard of this one before but it sounds like a corruption of the version information. Is the rest of IE working OK?
EdwardD [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Are there any plans for improving the Laptop experience? Our company, which have several thousands of PC's and some laptops really have trouble with people not reaching their profile from home etc. Are there any plans for improving this
A: Are you using roaming profiles? Local Profiles? Cached credential logons? Need some more information to answer your question fully...
LanceZ [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: THIS IS MY FIRST TIME HERE, WHO DO I TALK TO ABOUT MY PROBLEM
A: You can ask about your issue here. What's the issue you're experiencing?
Charlie [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: No The ah hardware is nto the same on the other PC Charlie and Dave
A: What error are you getting when you try and boot on the new machine? You should be able to run a repair on the drive in the new system and update the boot and system partitions with the correct drivers for the new system.
Fred [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: THIS IS MY FIRST TIME HERE, WHO DO I TALK TO ABOUT MY PROBLEM
A: Hi Sabby, you can simply post your question to the Expert Chat.
KelliZ [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Windows Vista is supposed to contain MCE. But will it be compatable with the Xbox 360?
A: We can't answer any Windows Vista questions in this XP chat; you may want to try one of the Media Center chats, but for the most part we can't answer any questions involving unreleased products.
EdwardD [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When I tried to install Windows XP Professional, while in setup it said my product key was invalid, but i know its the right one with the disk.
A: Do you have a Full RTM version of XP Pro? Or is it a OEM version? Some OEM versions will not work other than on their hardware. Also, do you currently have Home installed and you're trying to upgrade? Is this key an upgrade key or a clean install key?
KelliZ [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I can't get into safe mode or windows at all. I can boot from CD and get the Install Program and then repair, but I can't seem to repair. It stops after rebooting. I have a lot of apps so I don't want to do a clean install. Thanks Kelliz
A: Do you know the approximate steps you took for the repair?
KelliZ [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: It told me hal.dll was missing or corrupted. I copied from another machine, but when I tried booting then it told me system files were corrupted. so I ran the windows repair install, it copied the files, then rebooted, I saw the Windows XP screen, then
A: You may be able to try an in place repair: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;315341
Fred [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How I can change the screen of the users (outside of all users) what´s is the address in my computer where I can change the screen of all users - Thanks Experts!!!!!!!
A: Hi Oreo, are you talking about the desktop background that you want to set globally?
David Bristol [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is Windows Media Player capable of playing a single channel 16-bit Greyscale video, or only 3 channel - 8,8,8 style?
A: Ultimately as long as the codec supports DirectShow then Windows Media Player will play it.
A: Also, does the error here look like the one you have? http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330184 If so, this might be a better first option.
Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: yes dave, other than that every thing is working fine, with out any issues - able to browse and download
A: In that case it sounds like it is isolated to the resource for the help and about dialog. You can always try a reregistrattion at the command line of "iexplore.exe /rereg" from the Program Files/Internet Explorer directory.
KelliZ [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: i said, i want me microsoft money program back after i accidently removed it, i cant find the cd for the life of me, can you help me find the program in my recycle bin or something?, anything?
A: How did you remove the program?
Charlie [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there any way of changing the drivers and controllers or reseting them?
A: The recovery console
EdwardD [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How do you run a repair without using the recovery console?
A: When you boot off your CD choose the "install" option like you are going to do a new install, then when you get to the point where it shows you have an existing version already in a "windows" directory, choose "R" for repair. I'm not sure that this is the "exact" steps, but you should see it in the options.
David Bristol [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: MY ERROR MESSAGE IS COOD277F WHILE USING WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER, WHAT THAT MEAN AND HOW DO I FIX IT?
A: What are you doing when you get that error? It's basically an Access Invalid error code.
David Bristol [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: MY ERROR MESSAGE IS COOD277F WHILE USING WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER, WHAT THAT MEAN AND HOW DO I FIX IT?
A: Are you running Windows XP Media Center Edition?
Fred [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How I can change the screen of the users (outside of all users) what´s is the address in my computer where I can change the screen of all users - Thanks Experts!!!!!!!

Q: Kelliz-then it stopped and said it needed the ASMS folder which was on the CD but it couldn't locate it. Only thing it could locate was on the A:. I tried coping some ASMS files to a floppy to see what would happen, it started then stopped with some error.
A: Definately try out the links - I'm pretty sure one of those will get you going. It's pretty rare that you have to completely reinstall, there's a number of ways to fix this before having to go that far.
David Bristol [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I'M TRYING TO LISTEN TO MY MUSIC IN MY LIBRARY AND/OR WHEN I'M TRYING TO PUT MUSIC ON MY MP3 PLAYER
A: Did you purchase the content from somewhere like MSN Music or Napster?
Fred [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Experts: why does the windows xp prof. setup say my product key is invalid, which i know its not.
A: Hi Daniel, I would suggest that you contact Microsoft PSS in order to get a new license key. They should be able to provide it to you since you still have your original CD and key.
Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: How can restrict users to open only just 2 instants of IE
A: Hi rwtc, I'm not sure if this is possible as a user is in control and such a restriction might affect solutions that rely on opening new windows.
EdwardD [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Edward: I talked about roaming profiles etc.
A: Roaming profiles are a little tricky when users are at home, etc. We have to take into account the bandwidth, etc. there are considerations with group policy, client side caching, etc. This is fairly complicated and I would highly recommend your company open a support incident with Microsoft - specifically with the directory services team. Please use the following for support options (or utilize any existing agreement your company may have). http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support
Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: i am not sure whether i checked with this option or not - but reregistering all the IE dll files, reinstalling from the inf file and finally did a repair installation on the computer, still the same issue DAVE
A: I'm afraid I'm out of ideas on this one at the moment then MrNiceGuy. I'll ask around the team here. There is also the IE newsgroups http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/support/newsgroups/default.mspx that might help.
Charlie [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why is it that Windows XP doesn't boot up when you take the hardrive to another PC?
A: There could be many reasons. If the drive isn't recognized in the same order as when it was installed the boot.ini file will be pointing to the wrong disk and partition. If it is the only drive in the new system, the drivers for the disk may not work so again the boot.ini file is pointing to a dead location. Even if the boot and system partitions are still valid, some of the drivers may cause problems. Our best practice isn't to move the drive from one system to a different system, it's to install XP clean on the new system and then use the file and settings transfer wizard to move the "stuff" over.
Fred [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: The CD i have says that it is a reinstallation disk, but still says i can install windows xp. i 've tried calling but i cant seem to get a new key FRED
A: What did the PSS representative say when you asked about getting a new PKEY?
David Bristol [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I DOWNLOADED WALMARTMUSIC DOWNLOAD STORE, COULD THAT BE THE PROBLEM?
A: It's not Walmart, but rather an issue with protected content. We are aware of a number of customers running into this problem and are working to address it. Unfortunately there is not much that can be done until an update is released.
Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: hi, i getting problems with IE 6 SP2 & Windows Update, flash, shockwave & other ActiveX. Flash doesn't play, Windows Update site ask me to install an ActiveX control that appears in the yellow bar below address bar, but that yellow bar never appears
A: Hi leviscan. Can you check your ActiveX control settings in the Internet Security Zone? It may be that you have them disabled so they will not install or run.
LanceZ [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: i deleted my micro money program accidentlyin the add/remove programs, how can i get it back?, i dont have the cd
A: If Microsoft Money was installed on an OEM computer (such as Dell, HP, etc), it should be available via the application recovery disks. If this was not packages with an OEM, computer, you need the media in order to re-install. If you lost the CD, you will unfortunatley need to purchase this again.
David Bristol [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: i mean like with Windows Media Player you can open just one instant. there must be a key in the registry to configure that for IE. can u at least refer me somewhere
A: Nope. However, you can embed multiple copies in IE if you want to watch / listen to multiple streams.
EdwardD [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: EdwardD....I believe the disk is an upgrade, but on the computer iam trying to install it on has 2000 prof.
A: Hmmmm... it should work.... What is the error it is giving? Invalid key? Or is it installing and not activating?
zachd [MSFT] (Expert):Q: Since updating to Media Player 10, I've had continuous freezes, bith with and without visuals, and can't seem to repair the player. I checked for uninstall instructions on the knowledge-base, to no avail. What now?
A: Huggiggles, what version of Windows XP are you using? To uninstall or rollback Windows Media Player, you can either use System Restore or check "Show Updates" in the Add/Remove Control Panel. If it is possible to roll it back on your systemm, it will then show up in that list.
Fred [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: The CD i have says that it is a reinstallation disk, but still says i can install windows xp. i 've tried calling but i cant seem to get a new key FRED
A: Daniel, You might also find the info in the following article useful. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310637/en-us
Charlie [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How do you run a repair without using the recovery console?
A: You can put the drive into the old machine and remove the disk drivers, move the drive and bring it up and let it detect
Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: oh, all of them are enabled... flash & shockwave appears to be uninstalled, but quicktime doesn't play, and Windows Update ask me for that ActiveX control
A: Are the settings for "Download Signed ActiveX Controls" set to prompt? Have you tried visiting www.Macromedia.com to do an explicit install of Flash?
Fred [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When I power my PC down at home (running WIN XP) it shows its shutting down properly, however, once it powers down, it starts itself up again. I have to quickly unplug the power source if I really want my PC to stay off. What can I do to correct this?
A: Hi Leo, it sounds like you are getting the problem described in the following KB article - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311806/en-us
David Bristol [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: okay, will i be notified when an update is released
A: It will most likely be released as a Windows Update.
Fred [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: hello can u attend to my question
A: Hello Vinith, can you please post your question to the Expert Section. Thanks.
KelliZ [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there any way around it so I can connect to a WEP enbabled wireless router NOT broadcasting its name, even though there are other unprotected ones here? As soon as I tell it to disable SSID broadcast, I lose the connection until I re-enable SSID b-cast
A: This might help a little: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831770/en-us Is there a reason you don't want SSID broadcasting?
Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: yes, and i tried to install flash from macromedia, but IE never show me anything...
A: In teh security settings for the Internet Zone can you use the "Default Level" button and apply to return to the default settings. This may help. Are there any ActiveX controls that are installed and working?
LanceZ [MSFT] (Moderator):
Be sure to ask your question in the "Ask the Experts" option if you want assistance. ;)
KelliZ [MSFT] (Expert):
A: Another possibility is to go into your wireless network properties and add the connection manually. Is the problem that even though it's in that list, you can't connect to it? If you bump it up the list to the top, it should choose it. I've never worked with non-broadcast routers, though.
Fred [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Fred - on another matter do you know of any charitable organizations (perhaps even MicroSoft) that will donate 10 user licenses for WIN XP and Office 2003 for a church lab teaching free computer classes to the down and trodden as a neighborhood outreach?
A: Hi Leo, you can investigate your option with the Microsoft Community Affairs program. Here is their URL - http://www.microsoft.com/citizenship/giving/
Charlie [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Fred - on another matter do you know of any charitable organizations (perhaps even MicroSoft) that will donate 10 user licenses for WIN XP and Office 2003 for a church lab teaching free computer classes to the down and trodden as a neighborhood outreach?
A: Hey leo, This is something that MSFT will support but you need to get an employee to sponsor the request. I've secured similiar support for a program in NY City where I work. Do you know any of the MSFT people who support the area you are located in?
zachd [MSFT] (Expert):Q: Am using XP Home addition with both SP 1 and @ installed, system restore won't allow me to go back to mid Jan. I just tried twice to do the Rollback, and it won't roll back, though it says it has done so. I pulled up MP and MP 10 is what's there still
A: Thank you for clarifying. In that case, you would then need to use the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. If you open that dialog, select Windows Media Player 10, and select Remove, that should let you rollback to the previous version of the player.
KelliZ [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Disabled due to corp. policy - is there a workarount - so I can connect to my router (preventing SSID broadcast), but still be able to connect to my office router, rather than next door (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B811427)?
A: Okay, cool; that's what I needed to know. If it's corp policy, is this a problem that everyone is having, then? You should be able to put the preferred network to the top of the list and if you view it's properties, you should have an option to always connect to that network when you're in range.

David Bristol [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there anything i can do about the problem, until an update is released or do i just need to wait?
A: It is possible that you could resolve the problem by deleting the licenses as per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810422/en-us but keep in mind that you will loose the licenses for existing music and you will no longer be able to play it. After doing the steps in the article, you should contact the content provider to see if you can get the licenses again.
zachd [MSFT] (Expert):Q: noooo that is not my q. i want to be able to restrict users to open only say 3 pages of ie and not more. what key in the registry should i change?
A: At this time, this is not a feature of Internet Explorer. Thank you for the suggestion, though!
EdwardD [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: EDWARDD...the error it keeps saying is that the key is invalid
A: Sorry for the delay... check my previous answer....
Fred [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: how do you get to the %windows% folder, thats where i have been getting virus & spyware if you could get ther it can be fixed.. is there a registry folder to get in also?
A: Hi Fishrman, are you currently running anti-spyware and anti-virus software with the most recent signature updates? That would be your best defense against these types of intrusions.
Charlie [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Charlie did u get me q
A: Zack got the question but the answer is that this is not currently a feature of IE but we'll take it for the suggestion box.

A: Hi leviscan, When you visited the Flash site at http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash and explicitly download the control what exactly happens?

Q: Why can't windows validation site validate my windows. I know it is authentic--thats why it says there is an unknown problem and validation is incomplete. How do I fix this so I can install IE 7?
A: Hi Outburst, this is a problem that we cannot resolve for you in this forum. You will need to contact Microsoft PSS to get this problem straightened out.

Q: MY NOTEBOOK HAS A C AND D DRIVE AND MY MEMORY IS SPLIT. I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS TYPE OF STUFF. I AM USED TO SEEING ONLY ONE DRIVE THAT CONTAINS EVERYTHING. IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN COMBINE THEM BOTH SO I HAVE DOUBLE THE MEMORY
A: Are you asking how you would merge the drive partitions?

Q: I will try again. I want to upgrade XP Home SP2 -> XP Pro. I have the Pro CD but is from 2001. XP Home SP2 is installed on the PC. Setup refuses 'cause XP Pro CD is older than XP Home on the computer
A: Did you not see my earlier answer about slipstreaming XP SP2 into your i386 directory from your RTM XP cd? You have to copy the i386 directory (in full) to a drive on your machine. Then use the command in the XP SP2 install to slipstream the SP install to it. Then burn a CD with that updated i386 directory and install from that CD. 900871How to integrate Windows XP Service Pack 2 files into the Windows XP installation folderhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;900871

A: It seems that at this time, there is nothing on your system that the player would be able to roll back to and thus will be unable to uninstall or rollback. You would need to determine the source of the freezes (what most commonly causes them?) and address that issue. I would note that Windows XP SP2 should be significantly more stable than SP1, so you may wish to upgrade to that as part of your possible solutions here.

Q: how do i merge the drive partitions?
A: Not sure about your question, it entails a lot of options... RAID? Software/Hardware, or are you talking about extending your partitions or using dynamic disks, etc? But you might try this... After taking a backup of your existing data. Q: it's at the top of the preferred list! The odd thing is as soon as it hit "OK" to disable SSID, the connection can't be found, or manually entered/connected. Everyone here - as soon as SSID b-cast goes, no connection is gone until B-cast is restarted
A: Have you tried setting the connection by hand, or using the XP zero configuration where XP takes care of it for you? Non-broadcast SSID isn't supported by the autoconfig.

Q: Is there any way around it so I can connect to a WEP enbabled wireless router NOT broadcasting its name, even though there are other unprotected ones here? As soon as I tell it to disable SSID broadcast, I lose the connection until I re-enable SSID b-cast
A: Try this: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/tabletpc/expert/russell_tabletlaptop.mspx (I know it says tablet but it's not just tablet :) )

Q: hi dave, i'm back... when i go to macromedia web site, IE loads the page, but doesn't display the Install Now button/image/whatever ... and that's all it does
A: Sorry we are out of time and ideas as to why the button is not there. The newsgroups at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/support/newsgroups/default.mspx may be able to help.

Q: kelliz-when it reboots after copying setup files I see the Windows XP screen pop up, then a blank screen with the cursor showing. I can move cursor but nothing happens, no light flickers on HD, so it just stops with the pointer on the black screen.
A: Try the in place reinstall; I really think that will solve it. If it doesn't, try posting to newsgroups and asking about it.
zachd [MSFT] (Expert):Q: I do have SP 2 installed, and prior to mid-January, used MP 9 with no problems. If, for whatever reason. MP 9 has disappeared from my computer, can I install 9 from the download site, then try removing the update?
A: No, it is not possible to install Windows Media Player 9 on top of Windows Media Player. You should go to http://support.microsoft.com and contact a support professional by email, who should be able to advise you further about resolving the freezes that you are encountering.

Q: My recycle bin is empty, yet it shows full and when i click on empty recycle bin, it says ... are you sure you want to delete "windows" ?
A: Make sure you are showing "hidden files and system files" it might not really be empty. Go to "My Computer" and open it. Select "Tools" "Folder Options" and then the "Veiw" tab. Make sure you have "Show hidden files and folders" radio button is selected, uncheck "hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" but be VERY CAREFUL. If your WINDOWS directory is really in there, maybe you need to restore it and not empty it....

Q: kelliz-I looked at the two pages.I'm not getting an invalid boot error because the system32 now has a hal.dll. I looked at the kb315341 and I've already done those steps. Everytime I try to run repair, it deletes files/copies files, then reboots.
A: Try contacting support from support.microsoft.com; these are all the steps I know of to fix this problem.
