Introductions:
Katheryn (Moderator):
We are pleased to welcome our Internet Explorer Experts for today’s chat. I will have them introduce themselves now…
Dave Massy (Moderator):
I'm Dave Massy, one of the Program Managers on Internet Explorer working on features such as SDK Documentation and the developer toolbar.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
I’m the group program manager of the Internet Explorer Platform. I’ve worked on web browsers since 1993, inflicting good (first implementation of CSS in IE) and bad (overlapping tags) on the world along the way.
Peter Gurevich[MSFT] (Expert):
Hey there, Peter here, IE Program manager for all things rendering, imaging, and display. It's nice to chat with all of you again. If you have any questions about ClearType, Page zoom or Transparent PNG, im your man.
amyp [MS] (Expert):
Hi! I'm Amy P. I am the test lead for the IE Navigation feature team. I own testing Anti-Phishing, Cross-Domain security issues, frame targeting, Travel-log, WebOC, and DocHosting and other navigation related features.
Uche[MS] (Expert):
Hi I am Uche Enuha, Program manager on the User experience team working on Internet options, quick tabs, error pages and more...
Patrick [MS] (Expert):
Hi - I'm the security test lead for IE. I work on issues that get reported to us thru secure@microsoft.com as well as security work for IE7.
Katheryn (Moderator):
Thank you for your introductions! Let’s go ahead and start the chat. Again, please be sure to check the ‘Ask the Experts’ box before sending your questions. Thanks!
Start of Chat:
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: has IE7 changed the text rendering from IE6?
A: Mr Peabody - IE7 has made several changes in text rendering. The most obvious is that we default ClearType to on, as Nanbot said; we've also made a number of fixes and enhancements to our support of Unicode and other text issues. And, of course, fixes to CSS that may affect text.
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Is it common for sites with multi-byte character encoding (ex: Shift-JIS or BIG5) to hang a modern web browser like Firefox or IE7? I'm seeing tabs freezing on huge sites that are in English too (WebCT, Linux ISO sites).
A: Fiery, can you provide a repro so we can investigate?
Patrick [MS] (Expert):
Q: how will the Microsoft Phishing Filter in IE7 check websites?
A: Phishing filter uses a variety of techniques to identify phishing sites or potential phishing sites. Generally speaking, it uses a list of known good/bad sites as well as heuristics.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Can You discuss the differences between the Tablet Edition 2005 and XP Pro and where can I find the differences documented?
A: Sorry, this is the IE chat.
amyp [MS] (Expert):
Q: how will the Microsoft Phishing Filter in IE7 check websites?
A: Also, http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/safety/technologies/antiphishing/default.mspx goes into more depth in explaining how the phishing filter works.
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: will there be any more adjustment to the javascript engine in IE7?
A: Hi Rico, We aren't expecting any major changes to the JScript engine in IE7. What sort of changes would you like to see. Now is a great time for requests for the next version.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Hi Everybody, sorry I'm a little late to the party here, I'm Max Stevens, the lead program manager responsible for the user interface of Internet Explorer. Glad you could all join us today!
Peter Gurevich[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I hear IE7 is now "render" complete. I work exclusively with CSS+SharePoint and noticed several rendering oddities (calendars for ex). Just curious as to if there is any known upcoming resolutions between your teams? PS: Love what you have done thus far!
A: IE 7 is now Layout complete. We are continuing to work on any rendering issues that we come across. If you have specific examples please send them to IETell@microsoft.com. We will take a look. Thanks for the feedback
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: When is the next public build of Beta2 (or will it be Beta 3) be available?
A: Beta 2 will be available in Q2 2006 - so relatively soon. Sorry, can't be more precise right now. Watch the IE Blog, though - http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/.
Uche[MS] (Expert):
Q: My wife's machine is unable to install IE 7 - it claims that she already has it partially installed, and she needs to uninstall it. I can't find a trace of it (sorry, don't have the exact error message handy) - are there any known issues around this?
A: hey Alun, have you tried going to the control panel and clicking 'add/remove' programs with show updates checked
Patrick [MS] (Expert):
Q: why did yall decided to use real-time look ups against the anti-phishing server as opposed to an intermittent download list of sites in the way that an Anti-spyware product might.
A: Phishing sites typically have a short lifespan. Keeping a client-local list up to date would require too frequent updates.
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Can you discuss the differences between IE on Tablet Edition 2005 and IE on XP Pro?
A: There are no major differences between IE on these versions. Is there something you are seeing?
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Rumor has it, that the latest build of IE7 (Build 5358), cripples the tab functionality when "successfully" installed on pirated/non-genuine copies of Windows XP. Any truth to this?
A: No.
Peter Gurevich[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When you highlight text in IE, the selection automatically extends to grab whole words. I understand that this is a feature, but it tends to annoy me more than help. Are there any plans to change this behavior or provide an option to disable it?
A: We are actively investigating improvements in the text selection algorithm. Your experience should be much improved in the final release.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Lots of users find the IE7 interface bizarre and inconsistent with the rest of the shell when used on Windows XP. Are there any plans to provide a different appearance on Windows XP than on Windows Vista?
A: We are considering targeted changes to certain customizability features that would be XP specific, but in general the interface is going in the direction that Microsoft as a whole is, and was pioneered by apps like Windows Media Player and MSN Messenger.
amyp [MS] (Expert):
Q: Video's that previously launched in an external application in IE6 no longer launch in the same external application in IE7 (e.g. Windows Media Player), was this intentional?
A: Not to my knowledge... Do you have a specific example. I want to make sure this isn't a bug.
Uche[MS] (Expert):
Q: Uche: Re Q[13] Yes, I have looked under Add/Remove Programs with updates shown, it doesn't show there. [For those that don't know, that's how you remove IE7 beta]
A: well we removed it from 'show updates' post beta 2 preview.
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Is IE7's ftp browsing capability fully functional? And why was it decided to change the browsing style from iconic (winxp style) to list (.htaccess directory listing style)?
A: IE7 still needs some fixes to allow FTP to work as before. I'll have to check on the browsing style you refer to as I'm not familiar with a change there.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: When I surf the web in IE7 I get a few Javascript errors that I do not get when using IE6 (surfing the same sites). Why is this?
A: Can you give me an example site? It could be due to security restrictions, but we'd like to investigate.
Peter Gurevich[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: If I have feature request for IE7, should I submit them in Vista or XP? Thanks keep up the good work
A: Please take a look at the IE blog. Al billings recently posted there with info on how best to get feature requests and suggestions to us.
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: only today's history expand in history dialogue box when microsoft will fix this bug?
A: Ameya, can you explain the issue fully with repro steps. I'm not clear on what you are referring to.
Uche[MS] (Expert):
Q: Will IE7's FTP support FTPS?
A: no IE7 will not be supporting FTPS
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will we be able to move the address bar away from the top of the IE7 browser window?
A: We are considering doing this for XP only. One of the effects of this would be that any toolbars that were installed would also appear above the address bar (meaning things like the msn search box in the msn toolbar or the google search box in the google toolbar would appear above the address bar). I'd be curious to hear people's opinions on this potential side effect.
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: What reports have you received of applications / web sites that have problems with the recent ActiveX behaviour change (the EOLAS patent change)?
A: As the ActiveX activation change is the subject of an ongoing legal issue we are unable to discuss it. Sorry
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: We face some bugs using createTextRange and family. They are not fixed in IE7 as it is available now. Are there chances that this internal things will get attention or that code is already frozen?
A: Please send us the bug report so we can take a look - on the IE feedback site (http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/03/24/560095.aspx) or send email to ietell@microsoft.com
Katheryn (Moderator):
Hi there. We are about 10 minutes into the chat! Thanks for all of the great questions! Keep them coming.
Uche[MS] (Expert):
Q: Is there a way to backup and restore the Blocked or Allowed Cookies? When I go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Privacy Tab and click the Sites button. I click File -> Export Cookies to a file but the file doesn't seem to list them all.
A: hey Eric, there is no way to restore your blocked cookies. you can access your cookies though from the TIF and save them somewhere else but once the cookies are blocked, they are not stored anywhere on your machine
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Are there any publically available websites (such as the "Zen Garden Style" site shown at MIX06) that you guys have online showing off the new and improved features yet? If not any future plans?
A: We're hoping to publish the example from Mix06 soon but we have some more pressing documentation work. Watch the IE developer center on MSDN at http://msdn.microsoft.com/ie for updates.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: There are some issues I have with IE7 on one computer. If I whip the drive and start new or install IE7 on a different computer I don't have a problem. Are there any tools that I can use to find were the problem is? I can't repro on any other computer.
A: When diagnosing problems such as this, it really depends a lot on what the specific problem is. But some general advice includes: installing a registry monitor to see what key accesses are taking place, taking a system snapshot before and after install to see what was changed, installing an http proxy such as fiddler (www.fiddlertool.com) to watch traffic, etc.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: As a follow up to my first question, I run XP in native Japanese mode (not Japanese, but my hobbies mandate it). Whenever I visit a huge BBS like www.2ch.net or my online resources at the University of Maryland (WebCT), the render is slow and tabs freeze.
A: Hmm. I don't see a problem on www.2ch.net - any specific pages, or the whole site? I just opened up a bunch of pages in tabs from the site and didn't have any performance issues. Is your WebCT site open access?
Peter Gurevich[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: To what extent will IE7 support css min-width?
A: As of the latest public build of IE7, we now fully support min-width.
CyraR (Expert):
Q: I have noted a problem with Remote Web Workplace security connections with IE7. Sometimes it does not even recognize the certificate and just cannot find the site. This a known working site with access in IE6. Is this a known issue?
A: Part 1.Remote Web Workplace has a generated certificate. In IE7 we will be increasing safety for folks browsing the web. When IE7 identifies suspicious web sites, (e.g. IP address based server, generated cert... just to name a few) IE7 will attempt to block the site depending on the severity of the risk. The IE team will be working with GeoTrust, Verisign and other Certificate Authorities to offer high assurance certificates.
Part 2.There may be a general connectivity issue with your small business server that is preventing connectivity in certain situations.
Part 3.In general it is important to understand which issues are content/security issues and which are connectivity issues. Any more data you have on the specific problems when you can connect would be useful in resolving this issue.
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Has anyone seen an issue where IE running ActiveX Plugins corrupts the graphics memory and paints the display a solid color? This seems to be happening only in IE in Tablet Ed. 2005 (SP2) and not with IE on XP Pro?
A: I'm not aware of that issue. Can you report it with full repro steps to the public bug database? see http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/03/24/560095.aspx
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Yes, I am seeing issues with ActiveX and Java running on XP on Tablet Ed. 2005 that do not happen on XP Pro ... Was told the Tablet version of IE is more .net centric and not a com file is this not true?
A: There is no architectural difference between IE on a tablet and IE on standard XP.
Uche[MS] (Expert):
Q: how can we export selected RSS feeds to another computer??
A: you can go to File-> import/export and then export or import feeds to a file
amyp [MS] (Expert):
Q: Will IE7 have a way to backup and restore the Resited/Trusted sites easily?
A: Currently no. What a great suggestion, however! I will make a note to get this looked at for the next major release. You are also welcome send feedback via our external blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/02/15/373954.aspx
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Q: [24] I have an idea. Have the ability to move the address bar, but don't allow any 3rd party toolbars the ability the be above the address bar. I have seen alot of fake toolbars on customers computer and can see how this is confused. Thanks
A: Thanks for the feedback Joe.
Peter Gurevich[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I've noticed an annoying rendering issue (slooooow) on long HTML pages, like http://www.w3.org/TR/rdf-sparql-query/ . Why does this happens?
A: Thanks for the heads up, I can have the IE perf team take a look at this site and see if we can diagnose the problem.
CyraR (Expert):
Q: I have downloaded the IE beta 7 and not only I have last all my Favorites I can't even save new ones. I have unstalled and reinstalled and I have done whatever was suggested by the Blog team. Still isn't working Can anybody help me please?
A: Have you taken a look at c:\Documents and Settings\<profile name>\Favorites to see if your favorites are there?Where <profile name> = your windows login profile name
amyp [MS] (Expert):
Q: Reply to amyp: For example, clicking a link to a .avi used to open in Windows Media Player in IE6, it now gives an error: Cannot connect to the source file. Uninstalled IE7 to IE6 to check up on this, and functionality was restored.
A: to my knowledge this should still work. I will make sure this issue gets filed (if not already) and get back to you. Do you have an email address I can contact you at?
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: What will the EOL for 9x-series Windows mean for the IE team? What restrictions will be lifted from you guys with regards to future IE development? (Unrelated: I'll file bugs on the tab and rendering issues.)
A: Fiery, Not having to support a particular configuration obviously reduces the workload and particularly the amount of testing that we need to undertake for updates.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: [25] Here is a site the gives me a javascript error when trying to sign in in IE7 and I don't get the error when using IE6 (www.excite.com)
A: Hmm. I don't see the problem when I go to excite and log in. Can you try it and send me the exact page and error message?
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I'm glad you now provide a public bug database. What are your thoughts on: allowing users to view bugs without logging in; using it for IE developers to publicly chart *all* internal development; clearly showing the targetted version of IE for bug reports
A: We're working on a release right now so that people do not have to login in order to view bugs - this should come in the next few months at the latest. As for using it for all of our internal IE found bugs, we will continue to use our own tools for this, simply because they are so ingrained into our workflow and development environment right now. Could you reask your question for the last point? I'm not sure what exactly you mean there.
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: IE 7 is not going to ever be able to run on 9x though will it?
A: There are no plans to support IE7 on Win9x. IE7 will be released for XP SP2, Windows 2003 Server SP1, x64 editions of Windows and is a full part of Windows Vista.
Peter Gurevich[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: The address bar pulldown is lacking a much needed feature... Site headers (partial or full) should be included in the dropdown along with the site URL.
A: Thanks for the great feedback, we are looking into this for the next version of IE.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I'm having a problem with the back button. If i go to certain pages (http://images.google.com) and I follow a link, if i press the back button it doesn't bring me back to the previous page, but rather the page before that. Any ideas on why this is happenin
A: Thanks for the feedback! This was actually one of our top reported bugs on our external bug database (thanks folks!) and will be fixed in our upcoming beta 2 release!
Sharon (Expert):
Q: any chance of parental controls for xp ie?
A: We will not be able to port the parental controls features available in Vista to IE. Most of the features are implemented below IE and that support does not exist on XP. Content advisor is available in IE7 XPSP2. In IE7 we have provided a new content rating file which is an improvement over the one included in IE6. You can enable content advisor in the Internet Options Panel.
Uche[MS] (Expert):
Q: I am talking about browzing history. I have set to maintain history of last 15 days and temp files size 248 mb but I have noticed that only history for the current day is available. If I click on the oher day and try to expand that nothing happens.
A: we have a bug on this and this. thanks
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Max Stevens: On the bug reports where it shows the feedback type, status, etc., it would be nice to see the version of IE in which the bug is expected to be resolved.
A: Ah, ok, that makes sense. I'll suggest this to the folks who maintain the external bug database software, thanks!
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: does this chatroom offer assistance with windows xp at this time if not when is the best time to check back
A: We're currently engaged in an expert chat on Internet Explorer. See http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/chats/default.mspx for the schedule of upcoming chats.
Peter Gurevich[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: To Peter: Future builds of IE7 or after IE7?
A: Future version if IE (next release)
Uche[MS] (Expert):
Q: am talking about browzing history. I have set to maintain history of last 15 days and temp files size 248 mb but I have noticed that only history for the current day is available. If I click on the oher day and try to expand that nothing happens.
A: this is a known issue and we are working on it
Sharon (Expert):
Q: It was recently announced that IE and WinInet would get support added for the new TLS extensions (server_name, etc) - will this support be exposed through the SChannel API for other developers? [I'd like to see support for client and server]
A: WinINET/IE don’t support server scenarios, so the question is really for the SChannel team. As far as I know, no, they haven’t built a public API for servers to call into.
Uche[MS] (Expert):
Q: I used to be able to selectively delete cookies by viewing the cache and select/delete. In 7 the view cache button doesn't exist and all I can do is "Delete cookies..." and that means all of them. How can users control which sites can save cookies?
A: you can go to Internet options - privacy tab and select which sites you want to save cookies for. also if you still want to delete only specific cookies you can you to your TIF folder and then access your cookies and select the ones you want to get rid of
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
see you later Fiery
Sharon (Expert):Q: It was recently announced that IE and WinInet would get support added for the new TLS extensions (server_name, etc) - will this support be exposed through the SChannel API for other developers? [I'd like to see support for client and server]
A: hit send before I intended. We don't know of any a public API for servers to call into.
Uche[MS] (Expert):
Q: I have a suggestion if it is at all possible to insert in IE7 and that is a password setting for options. Proxy servers, content filtering, etc are a constant issue in the field with employees, students, and guests altering them. This would help that.
A: hey this is a great suggestion. by the way you might want to take a look at our group policy adminstration as you can do this through that
CyraR (Expert):
Q: Is there an "easy" way to bypass/disable the enhanced ssl-certificate warnings? I have a case where i visit a mail server that has a self signed certificate and keep getting a warning for it.
A: After looking through the settings, I could not find this in the settings dialogs. Please email IETell@microsoft.com with this question. One of our security experts should be able to help.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: For HTML in designMode, are there any settings to let Enter key produce BR than P? Work around put DIV at beginning does not work consistently.
A: Hmm. Doesn't shift-enter work?
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Has there been any work toward the links toolbar, with regard to folder dropdown on mouseover?
A: Unfortunately no, the links toolbar has remained relatively constant since IE6. However, that's a really good idea, thanks!
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: If someone will start devloping a IE7 plugin, using .Net framework, wich is the best place in wich i can find documentation (i suppose MSDN, but i don't have found nothing, maybe my fault)
A: It's an area where we are hoping to improve docuementation. In the meantime there are articles such as http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/02/06/webc/default.aspx
Jeff Varga [MS] (Expert):
Q: to jeff varga , Can i get assistance with my windows xp laptop?
A: This is an Internet Explorer chat. If you have a particular question related to IE, feel free to ask it.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Mmmmm, donuts.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Can I have a donut?
A: Sure. Here you go.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Can I have a donut?
A: Or send me an address, I'll put it in an envelope.
Peter Gurevich[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I've tied downloading IE7 and it won't install
A: If you have an earlier version of IE 7, you need to uninstall it first and then install the latest version. Have you tried that?
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Upgrading from IE5 to IE6 was a long pain in the butt, what's different now that makes IE6->IE7 such a breeze?
A: How was it a pain from IE5 to IE6. We've improved the entire setup and reduced the download size for IE7.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Does IE7 have/will-have the functionality to import RSS feeds from Firefox? E.g. Firefox can store feeds as bookmarks, which are in the bookmarks.html file, but IE7 imports them as plain bookmarks.
A: You can't import firefox feeds directly unfortunately. I believe that you will be able to round trip them through a service such as feedster, but unfortunately a direct import isn't possible at this point.
Uche[MS] (Expert):
Q: " take a look at our group policy.." Is this in regards to AD and Domain settings? I can see that as an option, but for the everyday home user who might benefit from the option for a password as well as the office setting I could see it benefitting.
A: you bring up a good point. we will definitely be looking into options for password manager through Internet options for the future
Patrick [MS] (Expert):
Q: Is there any (legitimate) way to run IE6 and 7 alongside eachother? I am wanting to continue testing IE7 on my production machine but I really need v6 to remain for production testing naturally. Just wondering if there is any thought gone into this?
A: Sorry, that's not a supported scenario. I would not advise attempting this, as results will be pretty random. How about using VPC (if you can't dedicate another physical machine)?
Uche[MS] (Expert):
cheers!!
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: When using the rss menu. I have an rss feed to www.slashdot.com, but every time i select a link to a story on the site. IE7 crashes on me. Any ideas of why?
A: Hmm. no, I can't understand this. It works fine for me (slashdot is one of my feeds). Have you had other crashing problems? Is this on the March preview of Beta2 on XP?
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What is the maximum number of tabs that IE7 can have?
A: To be honest, I don't remember the number off the top of my head, but I believe it's in the 60 range.
Peter Gurevich[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will any improvements occur to zoom-on-the-fly between now & ship, so that a horizontal scrollbar doesn't keep showing up?
A: We are looking at improvements to the zoom feature to minimize the horizontal scrollbar. For more details, please take a look at my recent post on the IEblog. Thanks for the feedback. Please keep it coming
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Any Idea about exporting selected RSS
A: You can only export all of your RSS at once. However, exporting RSS simply generates an .opml file that is relatively easy to figure out, and hence could be edited afterwards to remove feeds you didn't want to import somewhere else.
Sharon (Expert):Q: In Manage Add-ons dialog, first, the Tab control labels are blank(my OS is XP SP2). Second, some objects do not have producer(company) such as Fill Forms, how do I know it is safe?
A: Hi Mike - This was a temporary bug. It is fixed in beta2. Please upgrade when it's released.
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Is there a Windows Message i can intercept (even outside IE) to take the "rengering area" (visible area) of the browser, to... say save it as an image?
A: Hi ezu, You may be able to use automation to do this. It would help to understand what you are trying to do and where you want to intercept the message from though.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Re Q[60], yes shift+enter works, but we need to remind user. If just Enter, that will be very handy. Then we can give a button toggle BR or P.
A: That's great feedback. We don't have it as a feature in IE7. Can you enter it to our feedback site? (http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/03/24/560095.aspx)
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Does anyone know of a bug that causes the display to go a solid color (Not a BSOD) when running IE 6? We have a customer that is reporting this issue and is blaming the Tablet. You can remote access into the tablet and see the display...
A: Haven't heard this one. It does sound like a device driver problem, though.
Sharon (Expert):
Q: IE6 has problems with specifying wildcards in the content advisor (e.g. allowing or restricting *). Does IE7 or even IE6 support this?
A: The only change in content advisor from IE6 to IE7 is updating the default ratings file. No additional support for wildcards has been added.
Patrick [MS] (Expert):
Q: re[69] to Patrick: this is blunt, sorry. knowing, as i know, how long and painful getting pages to look right in ie is, it's much easier being able to refresh two windows one right after the other. anything to make it easier...
A: I agree, it would have been nice to have. I certainly also appreciate anything that makes my life as a tester easier. What's wrong with VPC though? There's a bit of a performance hit, granted, but you can have both versions running on the same screen that way.
Peter Gurevich[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Does IE7 allow third party browsers to use its engine
A: Anyone who want to build on our technology is welcome to. AOl is one example of a browser built on our engine.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will the MSN search toolbar (including Desktop Search, Bookmarks, etc...) come by default with IE7 or do I need to download and install that separately for my customers?
A: You will need to download and install this separately, it won't come with IE7 by default.

Q: ehm, thanks Dave... but what you mean with automation? :@
A: Windows automation is a term for technology to allow you to automate applications. http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/05/10/TestRun/ might help but without knowing what you are trying to do and from where you are trying to do it on the machine it is difficult to be specific.

Q: It is here C:\Documents and Settings\AdministratorIt is here but it only has few of the original ones that came with the computer. Why can't I save new ones, when I try to save any it says unspecified Error.
A: What's your email? I would like one of our testers to take a look at this.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there a way to view a list of all saved autocomplete entries?
A: No, there's no way to get this list unfortunately.
Uche[MS] (Expert):
Q: what wil MS do when a web page is reported as phishing web page
A: the site goes through the phishing filter and is stored on a list and blocked. here is the URL for more information on our phishing filter:http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/safety/technologies/antiphishing/default.mspx

Q: Q[65]: beta 2 version 7.0.5335.5
A: Hmm. When you just navigate to the stories from the slashdot home page, does IE crash?
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Howdy! Any chance of fixing the JScript garbage collector before the IE7 final release?? Brendan Eich himself recently weighed in on Eric Lippert's old blog entry here: http://blogs.msdn.com/ericlippert/archive/2003/09/17/53038.aspx discussing the problem.
A: There are some fixes in IE7 for circular references. We're looking at further improvemetns to the engine in future releases as well. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/IETechCol/dnwebgen/ie_leak_patterns.asp for a useful article about leak patterns.
Uche[MS] (Expert):
Q: Is there a way to auto-accept certificates from certain websites which don't have their certificates issued by a trusted certificate authority?
A: for security reasons, we don't provide a way to auto-accept certificates
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I have IE6 SP2 and have tied downloading IE7 and it won't install.
A: do you recieve any errors during installation?
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Hey, I am using clientCaps.isComponentInstalled in an application to determine if the MSJVM is installed, and this call doesnt seem to work in IE7. Do you know if this is a bug, or is this on purpose?
A: I'll have to follow up and check if this is nto functional on IE7 and if it is a bug or not. I'm not familiar with any changes there.
CyraR (Expert):
Q: shahriari40@Hotmail.com Thanks for doing that. So should I wait till you contact me by email?
A: Just emailed our testers. Can you make sure that1. You have plenty of free space on your hard disk2. You have downloaded the latest version of IE7 from Microsoft.com
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: What are the top priorities for standards support in the version after IE7?
A: I think our top priorities are continuing to remove the biggest problems for web developers, and adding the most-requested features. Off the cuff, I'd say features like generated content in CSS; javascript performance; more complete DOM.
Uche[MS] (Expert):
Q: Q: [83] when i use the yellow circle with the star in the middel to pull the rss feed. I get a list of all the new stories from www.slashdot.com then when I click the link to view the story IE7 crashes.
A: what kind of crash are you getting?
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What applications can be built on top of the RSS database?
A: Just about anything imaginable! Check out the rss team blog at http://blogs.msdn.com/rssteam for an example of what's possible. Specifically, http://blogs.msdn.com/rssteam/archive/2006/02/09/528195.aspx is a good post to start with
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: In IE6, select boxes were -always- on top of every other element, is this changed in IE7?
A: Yes this is addressed with a new SELECT element implementation in IE7. See http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/01/17/514076.aspx for details. the Select element will now honor the z-index set for the element instaed of alwasy being on top. Hurrah!
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: [95] yes, it tells me to look in my registry
A: does the error also mention something called "msfeeds.dll"?
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: I have treid out the IE web developer plugin, and I notice it is missing some fundamental features like an on-the-fly CSS editor. Will we expect this to improve in the near future?
A: This is on our list but actually is a little more work than you might initially think so may need to wait for a future version. You can edit the individual styles of an element but we know that full style sheet editing would be nice.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: yes
A: Check out this blog entry to try and get IE7 installed - http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/03/27/562265.aspx
Uche[MS] (Expert):
Q: Q: [97] the browser closes. Then I get the report error dialog box.
A: could you hook up a debugger and get a callstack so we can look into this and figure out what is causing the crash?
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Specifically, do you hope to support display:table, etc. and XHTML in the next version of IE?
A: Display:table is a tough one. It's high on our priority list; can't make any promises yet. As for XHTML, I presume you mean support for the mime type. Again, no promises there, because we won't support the mime type until I'm sure we get it completely right.
CyraR (Expert):
Q: Ok, Thanks, I have 15GB and it the latest March 20 version IE7.
A: Excellent.Found the tester. They will send you email later in the day
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Part of reusing the IE control is somewhat nasty: One setting to rule them all. Have you considered allowing certain applications to set their own priviledges? (such as a proxy server for just this process / ensuring that javascript is enabled)
A: A host of the webbrowser control can overide the JScript enabled setting. I'd have to check on the proxies as that is a system wide setting adn woudl probably require an overide of the protocol handler but shoudl still be possible. What problems are you having here?
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Does Internet Explorer get fancy code names like "Vista" or just un-fancy code names like "7"? :D
A: We spend money on developers to fix bugs, not marketers to come up with names :)
Uche[MS] (Expert):
Q: Q: [105] should i just email the results to ietell@microsoft.com?
A: yeah that would be great. cheers!!
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Firefox has built up quite a community of extension developers, are you looking at doing something similar for IE? Any developer and support programs in place?
A: There are lots of extensions available for IE and as part of our work on IE7 we are going to make them more discoverable. To develop extensions see the documentation on MSDN http://msdn.microsoft.com/ie
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: It is very difficult to find the "bug list" on the Microsoft Connect/Internet Explorer Feedback page. Any chance you could make this more prominent? I spent a lot of time clicking various links before I found it.
A: I'll pass that information on to the team owrking on that. Thanks.
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Does IE7 have that "click on activex control confirmation" stuff too?
A: Yes
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: If you had to invent a mascot for IE right now, what would it be?
A: Ben & Jerry?
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Hi, I have a java applet in a signed cab file that works with the MS JVM in IE6, and when I go to the same page in IE7 it prompts me whether I want to install it and I say yes, but then it doesnt install it. An unsigned cab does work though. Any suggestion
A: Can you file a bug on this. See http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/03/24/560095.aspx
Peter Gurevich[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: You are great thanks again have happy holidays. (ip)
A: Thanks, you too.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Any change the big E won't be the IE icon in IE8?
A: Most likely not. We have just a bit of branding and icon recognition around that one, and we like it :)
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: When is the final release of IE7 due?
A: Second half of this year
amyp [MS] (Expert):
Q: Can we single search visited url, example, we want to know what is the last visited time for msn.com in this computer without enumerate the lengthy history.
A: There is no support for single searching for a url (i.e. entering it into a search box), but there are improvements to the History View UI that should make viewing this information easier. I think this is good feature request though. I will follow up with the appropriate parties to make sure this gets on their radar for the next release feature request list.
Peter Gurevich[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Thanks to the experts. Have happy Easter.
A: You as well.
Katheryn (Moderator):
5 Minutes to go!
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: What's the final work going into IE7 before release?
A: Fixing bugs and spit and polish. Pretty standard for any software project as we get through the beta phase. We have work to do to get the product to a quality level for full release. Please keep sending feedback so that we can prioritise that work.
Uche[MS] (Expert):
Q: why in IE7 or for that matter IE6 does the History show as Temperary files IE5?
A: i am not sure what u mean here. are you saying that your TIF files in IE5 are showing up in history for IE6 and IE7
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How complete is the "Windows RSS Platform", ak
A: can i start developing applications without have to rewrite something because of changes in the API's? And will there be more documentation available (aka more than acutal MSDN Library reference)? .Net ifc?
A: We don't expect to make any major platform changes between our beta 2 release and our final release. Applications developed against beta 2 should work against the final version, with a chance of only minor changes being necessary. Documentation will also improve as we get closer to release.
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Hi, do you know what happened to the java console in IE7? Under the advanced internet options I turn it on, and on previous versions of IE a Java Console link shows up under View, but not in IE7?
A: Can you file bugs against the Java issues. http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/03/24/560095.aspx
Uche[MS] (Expert):

Q: do we have ie7 beta support thru phone
A: Beta2 is a supported release in that it will be patched and such. I *think* you will be able to get direct phone support from PSS for this, but I'm not sure.
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Q: 103 ... I have a program that reuses the IE control using MFC that uses IE + Javascript to fully control the UI. If the security zones are locked down, Javascript is disabled and the UI fails to work. I might want to specify my own proxy, also.
A: You need to supply your own settings or the control will use the defaults for IE. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/browser/hosting/reference/ifaces/idochostuihandler/idochostuihandler.asp
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Thought you might enjoy the fact that I'm running IE7 on my Mac Book Pro.
A: We do! I think that's great.
Dave Massy (Moderator):
Any final questions? We have only a minute or so left.
