Q: I am using IE 7 Beta 3... and i went to a web page... and SSL page... and i got a warning sayingthat my INTRANET is now turned off... what is that all about? I never seen that with IE7 beta 2
A: Intranet settings are less ecure settings meant for corperate networks. IE now detects the lack of a corperate network and turns off the INTRANET zone, for more information see http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/12/07/501075.aspx
Jeff [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is the problems with the drivers in vista ever going to be fixed?Im currently in alot of public betas , and this problem really holds me back.
A: Hey Drew - yup, the driver issues in Vista are one of the most important elements of roll-out on the Windows team's radar. Internally, when we upgrade to new builds for testing, we need to go through the same hoops as y'all in the public - which forces us to feel the same pain and fix the same issues. So fear not, we are making progress every day in this area. :)
LanceZ [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: What is the topic
A: This is a Windows XP General chat. If you've got an issue you're experiencing with Windows XP, or feedback, this is the forum where you can ask the experts.
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: My disk defrag keeps saying, could not defrag some files, but the list is empty, it has always worked before
A: which disk defrag tool are you using?
ansgar [msft] (Expert):
Q: My disk defrag keeps saying, could not defrag some files, but the list is empty, it has always worked before
A: can you determine if system files are included in the list of files you want to fragment?
LanceZ [MSFT] (Moderator):
Please make sure you keep it to a question, or a followup to a question when using the "Ask the Experts" option, this helps us properly track the issues brought up today.
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: My disk defrag keeps saying, could not defrag some files, but the list is empty, it has always worked before
A: If the error message is related to not being able to access part of the drive, you will need to run a chkdsk on the drive you are trying to defragment first. Go to a command line, and run "chkdsk c: /f" and you'll likely need to reboot.
tom (Expert):
Q: Is the problems with the drivers in vista ever going to be fixed?Im currently in alot of public betas , and this problem really holds me back.
A: DrewMarin, can you describe the driver problem your having?
Jeff [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I just downloaded the beta version on ie and as soon as I tried to use it an error occurs and it shuts down. I had not trouble with previous version. Any idea on how to fix
A: What error are you getting, TJ?
Milan [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Can You Upgrade The CPU In A Laptop?
A: Hello. It generally depends on the manufacturer of the laptop. Have you checked the manual that came with the laptop?
LanceZ [MSFT] (Moderator):
Medawen, please keep your questions to questions. :)
LuisMC [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I keep getting TV tuner not istalled when trying to use my WMC tv tuner & radio. I have tried to reinstall SP2 along with the 1.1 .NET Frame something. Any more suggestions?
A: Is the driver of your tunner card supported in MCE?
LanceZ [MSFT] (Moderator):
Farmsale, please ask your question again, using the "Ask the Experts" option so our folks may address your issue. Thanks!
Milan [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I did Not Get A Manual With My Laptop
A: Hmmm .... okay - generally you should be able to do that if you really want to. However, you will need to know that the OEM will not be supporting it and all warranty will be void. You will need to check with the motherboard specs and find a compatible proc that you can replace with.
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: errors were found
A: ok, you definitely need to run chkdsk with the /F switch. This will require a reboot, but it will cause Windows to fix those errors before it starts up again. After that, you can do you defrag.
LuisMC [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: yeah it should be. It came with the computer and worked before.
A: Ok, you can try System Restore to get your Media Center to the state where it was working and then go to Windows Update and try to avoid an update driver that might be the issue
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: chkdsk cannot continue in read only mode.. now what
A: You need to use the /F switch from the command line. e.g. chhdsk c: /f
Milan [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Help removing program from my computer
A: Hi Lynn ... can you give me more details on the problem?
tom (Expert):
Q: tom Vista had my 1394 etherntet connection not installed, my ethernet controller not installed, and my build in wireless , so I tried installing them by getting the drivers in xp and saving them to vista's partition but after installing them it didnt work
A: If you go to Device Manager (do a devmgmt.msc from cmd.exe) do you see that those devices are banged out with yellow exclamation? If they are can you tell me what those devices are?
db [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: we had a problem here with a foreign disk issue- can xp home access a foreign drive or only xp pro, how is this done
A: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/dm_status_disk.mspx?mfr=true
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Medawen: excellent. BTW, only add questions when you have a question. For general comments, come back to chat 8D
LuisMC [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Tuner card is a Hauppauge WinTV PVR PCI II. Will system restore just restore WMC or do I need to worry about losing files?
A: It will restore the OS to a previous state and will not mess with your files, however backing up is always a good idea :)
db [MSFT] (Expert):
A: Sorry Dennis...check out http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/dm_status_disk.mspx?mfr=true.

db [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: we had a problem here with a foreign disk issue- can xp home access a foreign drive or only xp pro, how is this done
A: The Foreign status occurs when you move a dynamic disk to the local computer from another computer running Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional, or . Foreign status can also occur on computers running Windows XP Home Edition that are configured to dual-boot with another operating system that uses dynamic disks (such as Windows 2000 Professional). Dynamic disks are not supported on Windows XP Home Edition or on portable computers. A warning icon appears on disks that display the Foreign status. To access data on the disk, you must add the disk to your computer's system configuration. To add a disk to your computer's system configuration, import the foreign disk (right-click the disk and then click Import Foreign Disks). Any existing volumes on the foreign disk become visible and accessible when you import the disk. For instructions describing how to move and import disks, see To move disks to another computer </resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/dm_add_disk.mspx>
Ari [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Tuner card is a Hauppauge WinTV PVR PCI II. Will system restore just restore WMC or do I need to worry about losing files?
A: If system restore doesn't work, Hauppage has good driver reinstall tools and instructions: http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/support/support_mce.html
db [MSFT] (Expert):
A: However, you cannot access data on the disk if you are running Windows XP Home Edition. To use the disk on Windows XP Home Edition, you must convert it to a basic disk
db [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: ok, checked that link before, was what I thought, thanks
A: Sure.
Ari [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: hello experts i have a issue with my registry windows xp pro
A: Joey: What type of issue?
tom (Expert):
Q: tom after trying to get it working time after time I erased vista of that laptop
A: DrewMarin, it can be frustrating at times to try out beta software. What is the make and model of your laptop?
LuisMC [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: im trying to set up my media center and my tv signal comes and goes, if i use my vcr if i pause or slow motion i see the movie but otherwise snow then becomes clear
A: It's difficult to say, it depends what kind of signal are you entering to your tunner card? cable (coax), Video/Audio? And then try to go to Settings and reset your TV settings
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
angeleye - ok, describe your problem with the registry (add a questions)
LanceZ [MSFT] (Moderator):

LanceZ [MSFT] (Moderator):

Ari [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: sure when i start up windows i get the sysytem 32 file on the screen everytime
A: Do you see this in a full screen text mode, or is this appearing in a window?

angeleye - you should try activating over the phone. Do you see that option when attempting to activate?
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Medawen: I'm looking up some information for your issue.. Stand by... :D
Durga Gorti[MSFT] (Expert):
RobCIf your daughter is not a super expert, you could possibly use a batch file to automate this. She simply clicks on a link. You could possibly even encrypt the password
Max [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=170086 this should explain
A: Hi, you should use the registry editor to solve the problem:start|run|regedit
tom (Expert):
Q: tom I have a hp pavilion ze5375 Us and its the 512mb ram model(it comes also in 256mb ram )
A: DrewMarin, I just found the specs for it and I see that it has a built-in one. By the way, what version of Vista Beta were you trying?
Max [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Just that sir?
A: are you familiar with it?
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Defragmentation is complete for: (C:) Some files on this volume could not be defragmented. Please check the defragmentation report for the list of these files.
A: It appears that if the list is empty, then there's no worries. You can safely ignore this, as long as that list is empty.
Durga Gorti[MSFT] (Expert):
Yes
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Any other steps i should take to get my disk defrag up and running?
A: It looks like your defragmentation succeeds. Let me know if that's not the case.
Durga Gorti[MSFT] (Expert):
RobC --> Yes she can run the batch file as a power user
Durga Gorti[MSFT] (Expert):
RobC--> Ari kidnly pointed out to me that you could possibly get some help from the webpage
Durga Gorti[MSFT] (Expert):

Jeff [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Do You Know When SP3 Will Be Out?
A: The last public release date ("preliminary") for SP3 for both XP Home and Pro was second half of 2007.
db [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Do You Know When SP3 Will Be Out?
A: And here's a public link - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/servicepacks.mspx
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Also recently another computer on my network is going and giving data to me through netbios-ssn.. is this normal
A: Are you saying that your firewall is blocking this data? If you are directly connected to the Internet, then this can be normal. However, if someone is copying files to your computer, then it is not.
Max [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: yes im there already does this sound simple to you?
A: I understand it looks quite complicate. Anyway I experienced this problem in the past as well.Mainly you should look in the node paths under RESOLUTION, and verify that there are no null entries.
LanceZ [MSFT] (Moderator):
20 minutes to go! I'm sure you have a lot of questions, ideas, etc to give the experts!
Ari [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Can anyone help me with a Microsoft Office CD?
A: What type of problem are you having?
tom (Expert):
Q: tom I have no idea that is just how it appears under network connections, and I was using 32 bit my cpu dosent support 64 bit
A: DrewMarin, your laptop has a built-in 1394 connector so WindowsXP and Vista will automatically set up a network over 1394 connection so that is expected. If you did see the 1394 network connection then the driver was installed. So the problem is that the driver isn't installed for the other network adapter.
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: norton is saying my lappy is giving me data
A: Do you have the exact message? It sounds like you have a Norton firewall, and it's blocking traffic from other people on your network. I'm sure the Symantec support site can explain how to disable these messages if they become annoying. :D
LanceZ [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Do You Have A Date Of When This Room Is Closing?
A: The moderated portion of this chat will clost at 11am PST.
Durga Gorti[MSFT] (Expert):
RobC-->I am sorry I take that back. Even if you have a batch file, you need to be present to type the password. Because the RunAs takes the password from the command prompt. I am sure that the website i pointed out has some tips.
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: And i cannot ping the IP its coming from
A: As a general rule, you shouldn't do this. If someone is trying to connect to your computer, you shouldn't "reveal" yourself by pinging them. You might want to create a firewall rule that blocks that IP address completely.
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: no when i go to my norton LOG it is saying i am reciving data from 192.168.1.01 through netbios-ssn 139
A: Ah, this makes sense now. Do you own a router? (e.g. linksys, netgear, etc)?
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: heres the thing.. usually that IP is my handheld or lappy, but when i ping it it says something like no ip found
A: This is normal if two Windows PCs have file sharing enabled and are on the same network. Netbios tries to discover other Windows PCs to make file sharing easier.
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: laptop is on wireless, but i am not tryign to get or send data
A: You can disable file sharing on your laptop, or configure your Norton firewall to ignore this if it gets annoying.
LanceZ [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: LanceZ I Ment When Is This Chat Loosing The The Regular P2P Option.
A: OK, I understand your question now. Many apologies! I do not have a date on this change yet.
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Medawen: no problem
LanceZ [MSFT] (Moderator):
12 more minutes left to the chat! If you have questions, send 'em our way!
Max [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Use Registry Editor to view the following two Windows registry keys: how is this done sir???
A: once you open the registry editor, the given registry key path, for istance:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Runrepresents a list of the nodes which have to be opened in order to find the keys that could cause the problemSo double-click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then double-click on software, and so on till you get to the "Run" nodeHere the (Default) key will be empty but it is normalthe other keys should contain values like a file path (like C:\WINDOWS\system32\SampleName.exe) with a few options (like -s or /logon)
tom (Expert):
Q: tom but it showed up as non installed hardware , but I also understand its a beta and I cant expect it all to work like most people my age do
A: DrewMarin, I have Vista video driver problem with my Dell Inspiron 600m so I feel your pain. :) I think I need you to give me the model of your ethernet device. I assume you're running XP now and can you open cmd.exe and then type in "devmgmt.msc" and press enter to open up Device Manager. Then double click to expand the "Network Adapter" tree. Double click on each of the adapterand open the properties window. Click on the Details tab and then give me the "Device Instance Id"?
Max [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there anyway you can guide me through this sence that i have not used reg edit too often all of the registry mechanics wont fix it
A: Tell me if anything is unclear in the steps I have just given
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Peter Brown: I'm looking up an official answer for you.
tom (Expert):
Q: tom Im not on that pc Im on my server(wow a teenager with knowledge) and that ac cord isnt working right now
A: DrewMarin, I'll need that info to figure out if the device is supported or not. Come back to the next chat with that info and we can get more answers for you. :)
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Peter: Jeff has your answer.
Jeff V [MSFT] (Expert):

A: Peter, this KB article describes the conflicts that may arise when installing OneCare on a machine with antivirus programs currently installed: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909848/en-us

A: I'm not quite sure, but there is a feedback page that you can submit any issues you encounter and blackberry is a phone type: http://feedback.live.com/eform.aspx?productkey=wlmobilesearch&page=wlfeedback_home_form
Max [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: ok what exactly is the (run node)?
A: The regedit application shows you a view which is a tree, and each folder-like icon represents a nodethe "Run" node is the node you have to reach and then left-click on it to view the keys contained on the right paneThe values of these keys have to be examined for the system32 problem
LuisMC [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I have qustion about the Yahoo Messenger
A: What's your question? :)
gregoryh [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Would The Windows Live™ Search beta-mobile Work On A Blackberry 7230?
