Introductions
Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Hello! My name is Kristen and I work as a program manager with the IE Community Team.
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Hi my name is Uche Enuha and I am a Program Manager on the User Experience Team
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Hello all. I'm the group program manager of the Internet Explorer Platform. I’ve worked on web browsers since 1993, inflicting good (first implementation of CSS in IE) and bad (overlapping tags) on the world along the way.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Hi folks, I'm Max Stevens, I'm a lead program manager on IE responsible for the User Experience.
Christian (Moderator):
Please feel free to begin asking your questions and remember to check the “ask the experts” box before sending. Thanks.
Start of Chat
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: What are we going to learn about IE today?
A: What would you like to hear about?
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Please add undo button for reopening accidentally closed tabs.
A: thanks for the suggestion. We’ll look into it for future releases
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Will developers receive the final IE7 build before it is released to the public for testing purposes? If so, how long before the final release can we expect the final build?
A: We will not release the final build prior to final release. The Release Candidate build is getting awfully close.
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: hi, I am curious to when ie7 ends its beta
A: The final release of IE will be in the fourth quarter
Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Currently IE supports reopening tabs if closed normally. Will it support the option of reopening tabs due to a crash or system restart, possibly giving the option to only open a portion of the tabs (similar to how Opera does)?
A: Thank you for your suggestion. We have received similar feedback and are considering this functionality for future IE releases.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I like the ability to save tabs when closing and restarting IE, but when I reopen IE my home page(s) open too. I don't think they should to that...
A: We did this intentionally actually based on the thinking that when you next open your browser, your needs may have changed. In the afternoon I might be doing research on a problem I'm trying to solve and I want to save those open tabs for research, but when I open my browser in the morning I also want the weather and news headlines for the day, which my homepage set gives me.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Do you like webpage that eat 500 Mb RAM in an instant? I don't mine if you like them or not, but please look at http://seamless.usgs.gov/website/seamless/viewer.php and https://connect.microsoft.com/IE/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=202852
A: This particular webpage chooses to reserve a bunch of memory. I would point out it doesn't impact performance.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: how long will it take to make msie 7 fully compliant with CSS2?
A: What compliance test are you using?
Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Please replace the drop-down control when adding to favorites with something more suitable like the control in Organize Favorites.
A: Thanks for you suggestion! We will consider this option for future IE releases.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When I right-click tab and select "New Tab" that clearly indicates I want to open new tab RIGHT NEXT TO my tab, not at the end of the tabs bar. When will you fix it?
A: This is an option you can set in the tab settings now - "open new tabs next to the current tab"
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Currently IE7 downloads file in temp folder and copy it to destination folder when it complete. But downloading directly into destination folder like Firefox is better I think. Can we expect direct download in next release of IE7?
A: One of the reasons we do this is because on Vista for instance we only have access to the TIF. Other areas of the machine require we obtain permission first. This is a valid suggestion and something we can revisit for future releases
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When IE7 crashes of computer shuts down, the opened tabs aren't saved. Please fix it. IE session == Document. All good applications auto save documents or take measures to let users restore them.
A: Thanks for the feedback. Though it's too late to get this in for IE7, we'll consider it for future releases.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: How does IE7 make the difference between strict and quirks mode?
A: The same way that IE6 does - http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/dnie60/html/cssenhancements.asp?frame=true#cssenhancements_topic2.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I still see "This webpage cannot be saved" message sometimes. I often see it when there is some ad-banner on the page, but it's down (has red "X").
A: If you can point us to a webpage where this is reliably reproduced, we'll happily take a look at it. Thanks!
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will you add "By order closed" sort option for History? I want to be able to see the page I just closed at the top and so on.
A: We will consider this for future releases. Thanks.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I want to browse in other tabs while saving a webpage. (Ideally I want to browse it the tab that I'm saving too)
A: Again, thanks for the suggestion fduch. We'll consider this for future releases.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: can you tell me if iie7 is going to have a few css fixes done to it, as we have created a very heavy css site, and noticed a few inconsistencies, compared with opera, and FF
A: IE7 HAS had a lot of work done in the CSS engine. However, there will not be any additional features or any significant bug fixes from the Release Candidate build (e.g. if we find a crashing bug we will probably fix it, but we won't change overflow or float behavior)
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Do IE6, IE7 use local DNS resolution (say, ..\system32\sriver\etc\hosts )? How?
A: We use wininet, which does the dns resolution for us. The hosts file is supported as part of that.
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: can you tell me if iie7 is going to have a few css fixes done to it, as we have created a very heavy css site, and noticed a few inconsistencies, compared with opera, and FF
A: we have done quite a big of work for css in IE7. Markus our PM for CSS wrote a great blog post covering all the css work that was done in IE7:http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/08/22/712830.aspx
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Thank you Max, but then it would be more convenient if you'd make an extra check box: "Also open my Home Page"
A: Ok, thanks for the feedback.
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will the RSS view support setting individual feed items as read as opposed to the full set at a time? Sometimes I can have 50+ new feeds, and I can't read them all at once, and it's equally confusing to leave all items unread too
A: Thanks for the feedback. This is something the RSS team is aware of and will be considering for future releases
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: "Though it's too late to get this in for IE7" It's funny. People asked to get that feature back since first beta.
A: Fduch, no product team ever has infinite resources. We've had a lot of features we would have liked to have added to the project, but they didn't sort to the top of our priority stack.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: And if you think that IE7 unbearable behavior when opening tabs is "By Design" then please write "Internet Explorer 7 is NOT designed to open more than 50 blank tabs without breaking your system" on the main Internet Explorer 7 page.
A: Taken under advisement. What do you think would be a reasonable limit on the number of tabs?
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Are there any problems (for what ever reason) on the site to say best viewed with IE7?
A: Go ahead!
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Sorry - just joined.... Can we ask technical questions as well on IE7?
A: Of course, Jimbo
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: if I click on ie or Mozzila the pc sometimes turns black and stuck and then I have to reboot, help?
A: It doesn't sound like this problem is specific to IE. Sorry, we only have IE experts here in this chat.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How can I do a screenshot?
A: Hit print screen, then open Microsoft paint and paste into it.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Should I download ie7 if I have firefox that looks like ie7?
A: Of course.
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: how does ie7 deal with (detect) a phishing url? Check with local black/white lists on user's pc, or check with ms server, or both?
A: we run an algorithm on the user's pc that tells us if a site is suspicious or not. This algorithm has a black/white list that is uses for checking. we also use ms server as well
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: When can we expect hasLayout related problems to be completed resolved? In IE7, a new bug was introduced, similar to the guillotine bug (191958). Solution: give the element "layout". Time for some structural changes to Trident?
A: As we've stated, we will continue to improve our layout and CSS engine, particularly over the next few releases.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When will you fix excessive windows handles usage (and leak) in IE7 tab engine that easily makes system unstable and unusable? It's described at https://connect.microsoft.com/IE/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=202837 with script for demonstration.
A: We do not leak any window handles - we will clean them all up when the tabs are closed. We are aware that, depending on system resources, there are a maximum number of tabs that can be created on the system. We continue to try and increase this number, but the number of scenarios in which a user wants more then about 50 tabs open is somewhat rare, and so this is prioritized appropriately.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: we have noticed that when a href covers a set of nested div's that it does not show the hand icon, across the whole spanned div, just it seems one pixel, this doesn't happen in ff, or opera, and it does distract from the user experience.
A: Do you have a repro case that I can take a look at?
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Regarding Q43: will this Guillotine-bug be fixed before IE7 goed RTM?
A: If the one you are referring to is not fixed in the Release Candidate, then no.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: what is dumprep and why does it completely stop my pc..unless i go and turn off.error reporting
A: I'm not positive, but I believe this is the program that, after a crash, will create a dump file and send it to Microsoft as part of Windows Error Reporting (the prompt that comes up asking you if you want to send information to Microsoft to help us debug the problem).
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: is there a place I can go to view the current list of IE7 Bugs and their status?
A: microsoft.connect.com
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I remember that there was 'restore tabs before crash' feature in beta 1, but I can't found it in beta 2 and 3... why?
A: We did have a "restore tab group" menu option available from the right click menu on the tab row, yes. This was removed and replaced with the checkbox in the close tabs dialog asking if you want to open those tabs next time you start IE.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: @Chris P.S. about number of tabs. PLEASE! If IE team will ever make hard limit to the number of tabs, make it adjustable on advanced options.
A: Wouldn't that make it even more confusing for web developers? (I was asking more about your user expectation, BTW - as in "how lightweight does each tab really need to be")
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
A: sorry I meant connect.microsoft.com
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: is there a place I can go to view the current list of IE7 Bugs and their status?
A: connect.microsoft.com
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: "microsoft.connect.com " I get a page cannot be found.
A: its connect.microsoft.com
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: A few weeks ago I offered IE7 RC1 on Windows Server 2003, R2 via Citrix Metaframe Presentation Server 4. I noticed heavy flickering on all websites, while IE was loading the website. When I used IE7 directly on the desktop I had no troubles...
A: I don't believe that we currently test with Citrix Metaframe Presentation Server 4. If we work fine directly from the desktop, this would point at Citrix as being where the flickering problem comes from.
Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Does xp pro come with the full version of office 2003?
A: no it doesn't
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: "As we've stated, we will continue to improve our layout and CSS engine, particularly over the next few releases" -- can you please give us a time frame of what a reasonable period of time will be for a "next release"? -- so we know what to expect
A: I expect we will have releases every 12-18 months.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: continued...] In order to get in I have place our domain in front of my username. Because this is different then in the Betas need to know if it is some thing that was added for the RC1 that is interacting differently with our script, or [continued...]
A: Meubanks, I would suggest that you call support (free for IE7) to discuss your issue, as it sounds like it's pretty involved.
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What is the difference between RC1 and RTM if you only fix security bugs? imho render bugs are too important to leave them in :S
A: Between RC1 and RTM we will be fixing the most critical bugs which may be security or rendering bugs amongst other things
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: I have had more than 100 trojans or viruses on my comp, should i upgrade to xp?
A: It sounds like you should, yes. You really need a bunch of the security features we added in XPSP2. Or, of course, wait for Windows Vista.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Some web pages inappropriately use the Meta Refresh feature, so I have to turn it off. Other sites won't work without the Meta Refresh enabled. Could future Meta Refresh option be set to a prompt (yellow bar) so the user can click to bring up the page?
A: That's great input, thanks.
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Several MSFT sites are classified by UAC/and IE security as not trusted sites and you're given the option not to go to the MSFT web page! in IE7.
A: could you give me an example?
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I just also wanted to say as probably no-one else here will ------------- well done on ie7
A: THANKS!! :)
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why does IE7 related questions or off topic questions get answered immediately (or very fast) and my single IE6 update question gets ignored?
A: we are working on getting the information you requested.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I will try to find the url to Nick White's Vista team blog or a MSFT site that illustrates for you what I mean in a second.
A: Please do, I haven't seen this issue that you describe before
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I have to agree with Steve33304, great work on IE7. Using it on Windows Server 2003 R2 right now, works flawlessly :)
A: Glad to hear it
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: And thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.
A: That's what the expert zone chats are all about!
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: What are the main differences in parsing/rendering between RC1 and final?
A: There won't be any major differences in parsing and rendering between RC1 and final. Test your sites now.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: why is this certificate of this site not known?
A: What site?
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I'm glad that Microsoft is coming forward in the browser world with IE7 and I hope that this positive spiral will continue not only with a next OS but also with intermediary upgrades.
A: I am of the same sentiment :)
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I want to show you what I mean: If you google for Vista team blog you get https://209.34.241.68/windowsvista/default.aspx and then you get "There is prob with website's security certificate."The security certificate presented by this website was issued for a different website's address. We recommend that you close this webpage and do not continue to this website. Click here to close this webpage. Continue to this website (not recommended). More information If you arrived at this page by clicking a link, check the website address in the address bar to be sure that it is the address you were expecting.
A: This appears to be a bug in Google's search results. I don't know why Google is returning a result pointing to the IP address of the server - if you go to http://blogs.technet.com/windowsvista/ you'll find everything is fine
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Can we expect updates other than security fixes between final and next version?
A: Yes, we will continue making improvements in the core platform and user experience, as well as security improvements.
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I'm not sure if you got my question(s) regarding the KB article issue, but if you could pass it along the chain of command--> Can you add a blip of information to the IE issue of "Security Alert" Certificate issues and the role CMOS batteries play?
A: I will pass this feedback onto the right people. Thanks
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Okay if you compare this same site different url here you don't get the IE7 security page of warning I just mentioned: Compare what happens in your browser with http://blogs.technet.com/windowsvista/default.aspx and
A: Yes, the reason why the certificate error is happening with the ip address version is that the certificate is granted to the name of the server, not the ip address. When you browse to the specific ip address, the certificate doesn't match, and you get the certificate error. Regardless, the blogs.technet.com address should be the one you use. I don't know why Google is returning a search result with the specific IP address as the url.
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: if a phishing url is identified by IE7, how does it warn user?
A: If we think the site is suspicious we color the address bar yellow and a phishing icon pops up in the address bar saying that we think the site is susipicious. If the site is a phishing site, we display a blocking page to the user telling them that this is a phishing site and they should not proceed but if they choose to, they should proceed with caution
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I mean thanks for coming and answering questions. IE team blog has a lot of valuable info.
A: Glad to hear it
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Thanks Gentlemen for answering the questions, -- good luck with IE7
A: Thanks Steve
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: PS I want someone to pass on a VERY BIG thank you for that Dom inspector tool. Thanks. PPS You should advertise it MORE...
A: We absolutely will.
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why don’t you answer some of my questions?
A: could you repeat your question?
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I'll try to compare a url to Nick's MSFT site that doesn't raise red flags but there are several MSFT sites that evoke a security warning from IE7 and I don't fully understand why this happens.
A: In general, if you're browsing to an https url that uses an IP address, you'll most likely get a certificate warning. Always try to use the actual domain name in the URL, not the ip address
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: is MSFT working on the bug where IE 7 RC1 brings an IE window to the foreground before opening links from another program in a new window? It's distracting to have an IE window take focus, then a new window open with the link I opened from another program
A: We've seen this a couple times. We don't have a reliable reproducing case at the moment, but we are looking at it when we see it come up.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: In regards to IE 6.0's Certificate "Security Alert" errors: I couldn't easily find a cure to the "The security certificate has expired or is not yet valid." warning in the Microsoft KB. I found my resolution which was to replace my CMOS battery enough, but was there an actual KB article on this that I did not find?
A: Garrett, is it possible that your computer's clock was not set correctly? The CMOS battery being dead could mean your clock was significantly off, which would make the certificate test fail (since it thinks the date is January 1, 1970, or something like that).
Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Regarding hot fix 923996. Why on earth isn't this hot fix included in this updated update for IE?? The hot fix was ready in August.
A: Release plans for the patch are still in progress.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: how long will it be before Microsoft charges for the sysinternal tools?
A: This chat is about IE, not sysinternal tools, nor windows XP, nor graphics cards, or anything else. Sorry folks, we work on the IE team, and only the IE team :)
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Chris Wilson - What SUV model?
A: Toyota Highlander Hybrid. EPA 31/27, seems to get >=25mpg (haven't had it long)
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: I didn't find anything in the KB articles that indicated the CMOS battery can be a cause of certificate errors
A: Probably date/time problem.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: How do we avoid this prompt so that our SETUP.EXE will be downloaded and installed for the current users?
A: Jimbo, I missed your original question.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Did you receive my question re: IE7/Vista Protected Mode and using an .EXE with OBJECT's CODEBASE attribute?
A: No, can you resend?
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I agree @ Q102, I like it very much! But i got a new feature/idea...firefox has it.... on the fly editting html code... like edit html and see the result immediately. Comes in handy for debugging html/javascript
A: You can do some of this now with the developer toolbar for IE (it's up on msdn.microsoft.com/ie). We're continually adding new features to that as well.
Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Can you tell me the status for the 923996-IE6SP2 public patch release? The hotfix is working fine for us, but we can’t ask all of our customers to contact Microsoft for the hotfix release.
A: Release plans for the patch are still in progress.
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why does Internet Explorer crash whenever I try to open a PDF file on a website?
A: which version of IE are you running?
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: can any of u answer my question?
A: This chat is for IE issues, sorry.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: this chat site, the certificate of this chat site ias not known to my pc?
A: When you log in to login.live.com, you get a certificate error?
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: when you drag a link from the page and drop it on the new tab next to the current one why does the link open in the same page?
A: Our tab row does not function as a drop target for links; hence it will always open in the current tab. Thanks for the feedback though, we'll consider this for future releases!
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is the release going to be both x64 and x32 at the same time? Or are they developed out of sync?
A: I believe we are releasing both at the same time
Christian (Moderator):
Just a heads-up on time here everyone, we have about 15 minutes left for today's chat.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
maxplex, ask that as a question so it will show up in the transcript
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I asked earlier about Unadvise() failing from a BHO (toolbar) in IE7, but not IE6. If this is not the correct forum, where should I go for information regarding this issue? Sharath: which
A: Lee, I don't think there is anybody in the forum at the moment who can answer your specific question. Have you filed a connect bug on this issue?
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there an expected release date for IE7 (not just the release candidate)? It would be nice to know so our sites are ready. And will there be any more release candidates?
A: IE will be released in the fourth quarter of this year and there will be no more release candidates
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Can anyone PLEASE tell me how this works? I just want to know how to use IE ONLY without OE?
A: I don't think I understand your question JoMama. You should be able to use IE easily without also using outlook express...
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: What is the status of High Assurance (HA) SSL certificates? Is that still a priority?
A: Absolutely. We have the feature implemented; we are still working with the other browsers and the Certificate Authorities to get the rules for "high assurance" agreed upon, but the certificates can be added later if necessary.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: I've tried uninstalling Adobe Reader and re-installing, installing IE 7 again....it still crashes when I try to open a PDF file on a website.
A: Are you running on XP or Vista?
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I just want to have my mail only go to my browser, not to OE
A: If you never start Outlook Express, it should never get your mail, and you can keep using IE for your mail.
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Any chance of early, mid, or late Q4? :)
A: I am afraid I can't specify :)
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: I have FrontPage installed. Why I can not see it in IE Tools|Internet Options|Programs|HTML Editor? I can only see Word and Notepad. How can I add the FrontPage in the HTML Editor list? Thanks.
A: Go in to Windows Explorer (not internet explorer, the file explorer), go to Tools...Folder Options...File Types, select HTML from the list, and click Advanced, select the "Edit" action and click Edit, then select FrontPage.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: At least that means that you leak them until the tab is closed. Example. Open many tabs.Browse for a while.Look in Task Manager. Resource usage for IE is high.Close IE checking "Reopen Tabs".Open IE. The resource usage is much lower. Isn't it leak?"We do not leak any window handles - we will clean them all up when the tabs are closed."
A: It's been a while since I tried this, but I believe there is a limit to how many tabs we will reopen when starting IE which is smaller then the total number of tabs that you can have open at the same time, hence why our resource usage is smaller.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: just a strange question, my curoisity, is ie written in c , c++?
A: Primarily C++.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: I'm running Windows XP
A: And PDF doesn't crash on that system if you're running IE6?
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is that WIndows LIVE a program or what?
A: Windows Live is a whole group of services online. for instance having live favorites means accessing your favorites online from anywhere
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: if a domain is shared by good guys and bad guys (phishing), does ie7 differientiate them based on diff path? l
A: Anti phishing is domain based, we don't examine the path in the URL.
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: wow, I can consistantly get IE to bring a window to the foreground then open my new link from another program in a new window on every machine I've tired it on (XPSP2 and 2003 SP2), leaving me two IE windows in front of my other programs.
A: That sounds like a configuration problem - the default behavior in the RC is to create a new tab in a running instance of IE.
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will there be a release date announced for IE7, or will it just appear?
A: we will not pre-announce the release date but you'll know when it's available :)
Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: [A57 response]: It was the date that was incorrect (1980). To most computer users who don't know the battery could be the error it would proove useful to the masses. Setting the clock right every time the computer is turned on and ignorant as to why it does that--> I've seen that issue a few times where people are oblivous as to why that happens. (if that makes sense)
A: true enough. Windows needs to have a better error message when the CMOS battery is dead.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I have a custom toolbar and bho add-on for IE. For IE 7, how can I determine when the tab associated with the toolbar is active or not active? Where is a code sample?
A: The toolbar is actually instantiated once per tab (this is how we retain compatibility with all existing toolbars). So if you have five tabs open, you should have five intsances of your toolbar running. There is no way to know whether the tab for the current instance of the toolbar is active or not.

Q: What is the minimum age that Microsoft will give a MVP out to people?
A: I don't think there is an official age limit but i will check on that.
Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @Max Stevens [MSFT] No, I didn't see the limitation. Ind if there is such limi, it's bad. You tell user you'll restore the tabs, but you fail to do so."It's been a while since I tried this, but I believe there is a limit to how many tabs we will reopen when starting IE which is smaller then the total number of tabs that you can have open at the same time, hence why our resource usage is smaller."
A: Ah no, I'm mistaken. I remember now - we put a limit on the number of homepages you can set in your homepage tab that's smaller then the total number of tabs we support. We will reopen all the tabs on startup that you had open before if you check the box in the close tabs dialog.

Q: When I open a page and leave it for a while its colors sometimes become 16bit. How can I make IE team fix it it I haven't found reliable way to reproduce it?
A: We need to be able to reproduce the problem ourselves in order to determine how to fix it.
Uche [MSFT] (Expert):
