Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Hi Christian, MAx, and Uche
A: hi Dark-Dx :)

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will IE does things with Vista that it doesn't do with Windows XP?
A: we have additional functionality on Vista such as protected mode and parental controls

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: It will be only available via Windows Update? or It will be available to download at microsoft site? Sorry for my english :(
A: IE7 will be available from the Microsoft download center as well as through Automatic update

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: HI
A: hi Pawan, how can i help you?

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Two features I would like to see in a future release of Internet Explorer are download management and much improved JavaScript debugging. Can you reveal if such features are being considered for future releases?
A: We have received this feedback from many of our customers and have included it for consideration in future IE releases. Thank you!

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: How can I get the best perfomance with IE7?
A: If you are a user then you shoudl check the addons you have installed with IE as those can definitely affect performance. Check you only have the addons enabled that you need in the Manage addons dialog.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is the favicon bug fixed?
A: We've made a lot of changes to favicons trying to quash all the bugs. Without more specificity on which exact bug you're referring to I can't say whether it's fixed or not, but there rae a few bugfixes coming here in the final version

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: First of all thanks you all (The Developer Team) for IE7, its great. and a request.... please give us now the Final Version :)
A: We're working on it as we speak :)

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: is there going to be a button for feeds like there is for the favorites on the toolbar? I just see feeds as something that will become more popular in time. Also is there a way to change the way you look at the feeds? Different styles etc?
A: this is great feedback and is something we will be looking into for future releases. right now we do not have a way to change the look of the feeds but i will pass this suggestion on to the RSS team

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Please change the IE7 middle click icon used for page scrolling because the borders are horrible, look here: http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/876/ie7middleclickbd6.png Please add antialiasing and transparent effect
A: Thanks for the feedback, we'll consider this one for future releases. I do agree with you - it's not the most beautiful interface as is.

Patrick [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How do I prevent Windows Update / Microsoft Update from automatically installing IE 7 on my users system, it breaks many of our partner companies sites? (From the chat around the net it will be pushed out via the automatic system)
A: There is a blocker tool that allows you to block the automatic update: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/updatemanagement/windowsupdate/ie7blockertoolfaq.mspx

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Firefox provides the ability to launch the browser and open several tabs simultaneously through the command line: In the above example a new Firefox window will open with 3 tabs going to ebay, microsoft and google. Will IE7 have this ability?firefox.exe -new-window "www.ebay.com|www.microsoft.com|www.google.com"
A: IE7 has the ability to set tab groups as your homepage so the group will open when you launch IE. You will see this selection under homepage options.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What are the the plans for IE7? Will there be additional version with more functionality, for example a 7.5? Or will any major addiitons not be unitl a new build?
A: IE7 will release later this month, and after that we begin work on the next version. Any new features would be done in that new version.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Can you confirm the rumours stating that IE7 will be released on the 18th of October?
A: There are a lot of questions surrounding the final release date and the rumors about when we're going to release. As we've stated on the blog, we plan to ship before the end of the month. It will go up on the Download Center first (and will always be available there). A few weeks after release, we'll start sending IE7 out over AU as well. If you want to block the AU deployment for your company, we strongly recommend having the blocker tool in place by November 1.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Will MS have apps that integrate RSS based on IE functionality?
A: Yes. The RSS platform functionality can be used by any Windows application see http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/FeedsAPI/rss/rss_entry.asp

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will MS have apps that integrate RSS based on IE functionality?
A: yes. for instance Outlook 12 already uses our RSS platform to expose feeds to the user in a different way. we also have gadgets on Vista that make use of our RSS platform

Jane [MSFT| (Expert):
Q: Can developers and end users expect any additional last minute functionality or further improvements in IE7 final?
A: We have made a few changes since RC1 so you will see improvements in IE7 final.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I like the instant headline functionality of live bookmarks in Firefox. Will we see this in IE 7 at some point. The current RSS features don't seem to give you quick headline access
A: It's too late for this feature to be built directly into IE7, although an extension could probably be written to do this. In terms of building this feature directly into the browser, we'll consider this for future releases.

Patrick [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: hello, i have one question: what is the different between the 32 and 64 BIT Internet Explorer 7 of Windows Vista?
A: There is no functional difference between 32- and 64-bit versions of IE7

rezanour (Expert):
Q: hello, i have one question: what is the different between the 32 and 64 BIT Internet Explorer 7 of Windows Vista?
A: The 32-bit is a 32-bit application which acts just like the IE7 on 32-bit systems. This is the default IE since most add-ons and activeX controls are only written as 32-bit applications. The 64-bit version is a true 64-bit process that is run.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Any plans in the future to resume development of Internet Explorer for Apple Mac?
A: We don't currently have plans to resume development of Mac IE.

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I like the instant headline functionality of live bookmarks in Firefox. Will we see this in IE 7 at some point. The current RSS features don't seem to give you quick headline access
A: unfortunately this is not in IE7 but it is something we are considering for the future release of IE

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Now that IE7 is nearing completion, can you give any information on how regularly you plan to release future versions of IE?
A: We definitely plan to release on a regular basis. Exactly when the next release will be is difficult to predict adn we still have plenty of planning and work to do. You can be assured that it will not be 5 years until the next release of IE though :) we are plannign the next two versions now.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Are more bugs being fixed before release? I have 4 Active bugs in the connect bug database 2 regressions 2 non-regressions all Active Document Server problems?
A: There will be quite a few bugs fixed between RC1 and our final release, and we continue to look for those last major show-stopping issues that might prevent us from releasing.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: You seem to have completely turned off anti-aliasing on layers with MS Filters applied to them in order to combat the previous ClearType bug. Is this behaviour intentional and if so I hope you realise it's an annoying and far from perfect "fix"?
A: As noted on the blog, certain filters cause cleartype to be disabled. We're looking at improvements for a future release.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Will there be Mui packages for IE7 and when they will be avaible?
A: Yes, there will be a MUI version of IE7. By its very nature, it will be available once we have all the international versions of IE released, within a few months.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Are you aware of the issue in which the background of transparent parts of PNGs turn black when an MS Filter is applied to them? If so, will it be fixed for final? (Feedback ID 151786)
A: Hi JackC, This is a known effect of some filters that won't be addressed in this release.

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Firefox provides the ability to launch the browser and open several tabs simultaneously through the command line: In the above example a new Firefox window will open with 3 tabs going to ebay, microsoft and google. Will IE7 have this ability?firefox.exe -new-window "www.ebay.com|www.microsoft.com|www.google.com"
A: Correction: IE7 does not currently do this, however we are aware of the customer request for the functionality and are considering it for future releases.

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I feel that IE7's Feed Subscription is completely useless. Why does it not alert me directly when new content is discovered in feeds? Surely the entire point of feeds is that the information is fed to the user without them needing to be proactive.
A: I understand ur pain and that is why we are working on making RSS more discoverable in the next release.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will IDN TLDs be supported ? Internationalised Domain Names - Top Level DomainsA: Internet Explorer converts to punycode on a per-label basis. Hence, if ICANN registers TLDs using Unicode characters, IE will work correctly with them.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: The DX Transform for DropShadow is broken by zooming in IE7 (still true in RC1). This was reported to Connect as bug #56954 on 28 March 2006, which is still "active". Will this be fixed before IE7 release, or should I go through my sites removing it now?
A: Hi, I'm afraid this issue will not be fixed in this release of IE. We do plan more work around zoom in the future.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: BUG: the latest build (vista rc2) still has a command not capitalized correctly: The command "Find on this Page" (Edit menu) should be "Find on This Page". The word "This" is always capitalized when using title caps. Are you aware of this?
A: I hope that's the worst you've found. :-)

Jane [MSFT| (Expert):
Q: Are more bugs being fixed before release? I have 4 Active bugs in the connect bug database 2 regressions 2 non-regressions all Active Document Server problems?
A: The design of IE7 has been locked down. Only very critical issues are investigated at this point. We will be considering Connect issues for a future release of IE7.

Patrick [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: does the blocker tool only block the update, or the install by a user "from the download"?
A: Users can still manually install IE7. The blocker tool just blocks automatic update. You can read all the details about this at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/updatemanagement/windowsupdate/ie7blockertoolfaq.mspx

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there anything new and excting to be included when IE7 is released beyond that of RC1? For example, there's supposed to be soem little added extars for when Vista finally ships that are not in RC2. Will this be the same for IE7?
A: The main changes between RC1 and the final release will be many many bug changes that help improve the overall reliability of the browser. There won't be any major new features - these are being considered for our next release after IE7

rezanour (Expert):
Q: I've seen a 'bunch' of sites that don't seem to work right with IE7. Is there a Microsoft mechansm where i can report them and you can go and help them out? Or do the sites themselves need to figure things out?
A: This usually happening when sites are specifically checking for older versions of IE (ex; IE6). We have released a utility that allows you to tell IE7 to report itself as IE6 temporarily for these sites until they correct the issues themselves.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Any word on supporting developers who need to run IE6 and 7 concurrently? I'm currently running the IE7 RC1 standalone hack.
A: As we've mentioned before, we suggest users who need to run multiple versions of IE use virtualization technology like Microsoft Virtual PC (available for free download now!) or multiple machines. We know this is a pain point for everyone (including us!) and will focus on providing a good solution in a future versions.

rezanour (Expert):
Q: I've seen a 'bunch' of sites that don't seem to work right with IE7. Is there a Microsoft mechansm where i can report them and you can go and help them out? Or do the sites themselves need to figure things out?

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will the css changes in IE7 have an effect in strict mode only or are they also going to impact quirks mode. If they affect both modes, what changes are not going to affect apply to quirks.
A: the css changes are only in strict mode

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: As a web developer, I would just like to say a big THANK YOU for fixing the majority of issues that existed in IE6, as well as added support and fixes for various CSS properties and of course PNG transparency. Working with IE7 is now a real pleasure. :)
A: Thanks. It's been a lot of work. We know we have more work to do in the next release though.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When is the last day to submit bugs for IE7?
A: The CONNECT database will be closing at RTM, but will reopen for the next beta. IE7 bugs after RTM should go through product support, who will funnel them to the IE team for possible patching, etc. As always, we always take security issues at secure@microsoft.com

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Why did u change the IE7+ name In Vista to windows internet explorer?
A: I blogged about this a while back. Basically the IE7+ naming caused a lot of confusion and we also saw that many, many people (including those in the blog comments) hated the name.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Will IE7 work with Windows 98?
A: Sorry.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: will the render-enginge of IE7 with XP different then on vista?
A: Trident (the name of our html rendering engine) should produce the same results on vista as it does XP

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Is it possible to install IE7 alongside IE6? This would help with supporting legacy application that wouldn't work with IE7 (yet), while the bugs are getting fixed...
A: Hi. Virtual PC is now free and will allow you to run different versions of Windows with different versions of IE on the same machine at the same time.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Please change the IE7 middle click icon used for page scrolling because the borders are horrible, look here: http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/876/ie7middleclickbd6.png Please add antialiasing and transparent filter
A: Thanks for the feedback, we'll consider this for a future release

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there any plans to allow us to run IE6 and IE7 at the same time, as a full time web developer I need to be able to test on IE6 and IE7 as IE6 will be around for a long time. How do you expect me to support my existing clients without IE6?
A: Microsoft recently made Virtual PC freely downloadable. You can run IE6 on a Virtual PC on your main system with IE7 installed.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I'd like having an advanced option in order to disable the HTTP referrers in IE7

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Why the decision to make IE7 a critical update? Won't it make things worse if the computer is not well optimized or if the user doesn't know how to proceed?
A: We believe the additional security protections afforded by IE7 make it important enough to deploy via AU.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Why do the fonts look different now that I have installed IE 7? Not only fonts on different websites, but the all the fonts look different in my Yahoo! Messenger windows as well.
A: This is probably the result of Cleartype see http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/03/03/543181.aspx

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I'd like having an advanced option in order to disable the HTTP referrers in IE7
A: This is something that we'll be looking at for a future release of IE.

Patrick [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there plans to make the pop-up blocker work better? There are still pop-ups that get past? Possibly and update feature for this or a feature that allows up to prevent future windows that pop-up to come back?A: Please report instances of sites that circumvent the popup blocker. We will definitely keep working on improving the popup blocker in future.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: How did the processing of XML documents (and launching external apps to load them) change from MSIE6 to MSIE7?
A: Is there some specific behavior change you are referring to? One of the key changes is the one page display when you click on an RSS feed.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When you middle-click on a link (or button, in the case of bookmarks) in Firefox, it automatically opens a new tab. Will there be an option like this in IE7?
A: This should work now in the RC1 build of IE7. In addition to middle clicking, you can also hold down control while left clicking to have it open in a new tab, or right click and choose the menu option "open in new tab". Check out your tab preferences from tools->options to make sure everything is setup the way you want it.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: WSUS? Classification? Anybody?
A: IE7 will be classified as an "Update Rollup" in WSUS, so admins will need to opt into it for their organizations.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there a way to make IE7 load faster?
A: See the "slow startup" section of the troubleshooting guide here: http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp. You'll also want to do general system cleanup like defragging the hard disk and ensuring that you haven't got a ton of unneeded processes running in the background.

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: In "Understanding and Working in Protected Mode Internet Explorer", IE7 extension can only write to a few "...\low" folders, are those "...\low" already existed? Or need to be created?http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/ietechcol/dnwebgen/protectedmode.asp
A: The Low folder already exists when you're in protected mode. IE creates it

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: The bug where it doesn't keep custom icons
A: There were many bugs fixed with favicon handling between RC1 and RTM. I can't promise we got them all, but I haven't seen any serious issues with keeping custom icons.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: will be ie7 included in xp service pack 3?
A: We haven't finalized our XPSP3 plans yet. Historically, we have not included new versions of IE with Windows service packs, although we have updated new versions of IE if they are on the machine already.

Jane [MSFT| (Expert):
Q: The DX Transform for DropShadow is broken by zooming in IE7 (still true in RC1). This was reported to Connect as bug #56954 on 28 March 2006, which is still "active". Will this be fixed before IE7 release, or should I go through my sites removing it now?
A: Thanks for submitting your bug on the Connect site. Your issue will be considered for a future release of IE.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Is there a fix for the newly reported VML security hole?
A: Yes. A patch has been avaialbe from Windows Update for some time. the release candidate of IE7 was not vulnerable to the exploit.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Firefox offers a lot of extensions to change the way Firefox looks and acts. Will this be offered in IE7 (i.e. themes and extensions)?
A: Many extensions are available for IE; see http://www.ieaddons.com and http://www.enhanceie.com. IE uses the Windows system themes. Offering even more customizability is something we're looking at for future releases.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: [Hope this hasn't been asked already] Can you confirm that the IE7 update will be released as a NON-Security update? I've seen a number of press pieces describe it as a security update.
A: IE7 will be released as a "high priority" update on WU/AU and as an "Update Rollup" on WSUS.

Patrick [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Chrome of most dialogs in IE7 is wrong. includes File upload dialog, properties dialog, etc. Will these be fixed in an incremental (e.g. 7.0.x release?)
A: Please explain - what do you mean by 'wrong'?

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Hello IE Team. Looking for info on the following things: 1.) A Changelog between RC1 and the proposed Final... what has changed, any DOM/JS/CSS/XHTML/HTML/PNG fixes/changes?
A: We don't publish an exact change log as it would not be very helpful unless you knwo the IE codebase. We do document changes on MSDN http://msdn.microsoft.com/ie There are relatively few changes since RC1 as we have been concentrating on critical bug fixes since the release candidate.

Jane [MSFT| (Expert):
Q: do you know the status of Feedback ID 202438? This is the bug where the Previous IE window is first given focus before a New IE window is opened when clicking a link in another program and "reuse windows..." is not selected.
A: Thanks for submitting your feedback on the connect site. The issue you submitted is actually a suggestion because the behaviour you are describing is by design. We will consider your request for a future release of IE.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: how much bugs has resolved? from rc1?
A: We resolved the most critical issues reported as well as internal bugs discovered in the meantime. RTM is a solid improvement over RC1.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When I hide buttons in the toolbar, they aren't saved between sessions. ...even if I close all browser windows and come back in. Also, will there be a way to put the menubar back on top.
A: Thanks for the feedback. I haven't actually seen this issue before - what buttons are you trying to hide, and how are you trying ot hide them? In response to putting the menubar back on top, there's no supported way to do this unfortunately. For an unsupported way, take a look at http://blogs.msdn.com/tonyschr/archive/2006/01/31/521542.aspx

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: what is the difference between ie7 and the version that comes with Vista? Also can you describe what that feature is/does?
A: IE7 on XP and Vista are based on the same codebase and are very similar. There are a few specific differences. The biggest one is that IE7 on Vista has Protected Mode, which allows IE to run at lower than user privilege. There are a few other smaller changes on Vista: enhanced network diagnostics, integration with Vista parental controls, and we send TLS extensions on Vista.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Is there a way to have multiple tabs that go beyond the main bar, flow onto a new row?
A: Not in IE7. Good idea though.

Jane [MSFT| (Expert):
Q: do you know the status of Feedback ID 202438? This is the bug where the Previous IE window is first given focus before a New IE window is opened when clicking a link in another program and "reuse windows..." is not selected.
A: Your request will be considered for a future release of IE.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: The options for controlling tabs and their creation are pretty scant compared to, say, Maxthon. Will the final release give users more controls than RC1/will there be a powertoy?
A: There won't be any added controls from what you see in RC1. There are no plans for an official microsoft powertoy here at the moment.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Why not put an "X" (close button thing) on each tab so that we can close tabs quickly instead of having to right-click on the tab and closing it from there (or having to switch to the tab)?
A: you can middle click on any tab to close it. We chose not to put an "x" on each tab because we think it makes the tab row harder to read.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Has the document.URL legacy file URI bug been fixed?
A: Please elaborate on what you believe the bug here is? In some places in the product, file URIs were deliberately changed from legacy to healthy for security reasons.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: What is the release date for IE7?
A: This month. No matter how many times people ask that quesiton today the answer will be the same :)

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: PRB: In the Organize Favorites dialog box, the buttons use a strange font. They should use MS Shell Dlg 2 like all other IE dialog boxes. Hope you can still fix the resources; it should be easy...
A: Thank you for that feedback. We will need to further investigate the issue.

Patrick [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Patrick Ed Bott is not exactly a Windows novice. He has articles on the MSFT site for years and he is the co author of "Windows Vista Inside Out" by Microsoft Press http://www.microsoft.com/MSPress/books/9361.asp
A: We have heard your concern about WGA. However, that's a Windows-wide thing and not something we work on in the IE team. Sorry if can't address this to your satisfaction in this chat.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Many questions are answered as "We're considering this for a future release." Are there any changes you have outright rejected for future releases and will refuse to implement under any circumstances? :D
A: Support for Win95. :)

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Hi--I am still hearing popup sounds even though I've unchecked the box that says play sounds when a popup is blocked. Any thoughts?
A: Perhaps you're still hearing sounds when the informaiton bar is displayed, but for something other then a popup? One way to disable this entirely is to go into the windows sound control panel and disable the sounds there.

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Are you going to ruin my Thanksving with the parents by making IE7 a critical update just before I go home to visit them? Mom will be asking me how this "new Internet thing" works and won't give me any turkey until I "fix it for her".
A: well I look at it like this, you're going to have a wonderful thanksgiving because she'll be thanking you for how much better, safer and easier her browser is :) . if you want to block the IE7 update you should check out the “Options for Blocking Automatic Delivery” section of our Automatic Delivery of Internet Explorer 7 article.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Are there any Easter Eggs in IE7? :) Or have these all be squished?
A: No easter eggs in IE... Of course, you can type the following in the address bar to see easter eggs: http://www.live.com. To activate the easter egg, type "Easter egg" in the box and hit "search". :-)

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: CSS Support Could Be Internet Explorer's Weakest Link. Are you working to improve CSS supporting in IE7 RTM?
A: We've worked to improve CSS support in IE7 see http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/08/22/712830.aspx We know there is more work to be done in the next release. You feedback helps us prioritise that work so that we deliver on the most useful functionality first.

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there going to be any differentce between standalone IE7 and IE7 in Vista?
A: on Vista, IE7 has protected mode and the parental controls option.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: From a deployment side if disabling anti-spyware applications and AV clients is unrealestic (but I can throttle down both from the consoles) what best practices would you put into place to have a successfull deployment? I am looking at over 1000 workstat
A: In many cases you do not need to disable the anti-malware software as IE7 setup is on their approved lists. I recommend testing to see if your installation is affected.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: is it possible to show sites with old ssl-certificates?
A: What do you mean by "Old"? IE will display an error for sites with invalid/expired/mismatched certificates, but you may choose to ignore the warning if you'd like.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: there is any chance of fix feedback https://connect.microsoft.com/IE/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=214229 on rtm?
A: Try disabling your free download manager in the manage add-ons dialog and attempting your download of jpg's again.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: is ie7 compatible with win 2000?
A: No. IE7 relies on APIs and features available in XP and later.

Jane [MSFT| (Expert):
Q: 2.) Since the Feedback site is still full of bugs that are not fixed or addressed, can we get an update on when these will be fixed. (ETD Date/Version/Patch) e.g. If bug #12345 is expected to be a rollout fix in IE7, or a IE7.5, or IE8.0
A: Thanks for submitting your feedback to us. Your requests will be considered for a future release of IE.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: will IE7 be integrate able in the windows source itself?
A: I'm not sure I understand the question? Can you elaborate?

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: when will start beta testing of next version of ie (after ie7)? Sorry for my pure english.
A: We haven't finished our schedule for IE.next yet, so it's premature to say right now.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Will there be any IE7 powertoys?
A: Lots of addons at http://www.ieaddons.com

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will the IE7 team be doing any updates to the IE automation objects (BeforeNavigate2, DocumentComplete, etc). If so, will they be adding new functionality?
A: Nothing beyond bugfixes for this release, but we're definitely looking toward updates for future versions.

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will there be anything like a "Welcome to IE7" or a brief tour of IE7 for people who received it through AU and don't know what it is/want more info about it?
A: the first page people we see when they launch IE will have all the details about how to effectively use IE

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: If you accidentally close a tab is there a way to get it back? Ctrl-Z for instance..
A: Not at present, but this is something that I'm looking at creating an extension for. IE has a pretty rich extension model.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Are you planning to continue workin on CSS compliance even after MSIE 7 goes RTM???
A: This will continue to be an area of focus for us in future releases, yes.

Patrick [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I just installed the most recent version of IE7 on my Windows Server 2003 machine I get frequent integer arithmetic overflow errors rendering the intranet site useless. Q: Are you planning to continue workin on CSS compliance even after MSIE 7 goes RTM???
A: Definitely

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: A recent article mentions the list of things that will not be released for vista, one of those being the Dhtml Edit Control. Several editors I have found use the mshtmled.dll. Is there an article that mentions the new limitations in Vista for mshtmled.dll
A: See the article at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnlong/html/htmleditinfuture.asp The old DHTMLedit control was deprecated in IE5.5 as we moved the functionality into the core of IE.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: if your in ie7 and attempt to go to an ftp site that may be down, it will halt and make you sit there while it attempts to load. is there a way to cancel this process and move on?
A: Unfortunately no. We will consider changes here in future releases, thanks for the feedback.

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: The layout of the toolbar icons is backwards to me but could you at least make moving them around available? I'd at least like to move the refresh button to the left of the address bar like all other browsers I use.
A: We have received this feedback from a number of our customers. We will be considering this functionality for future IE releases. Thank you for requesting this!

Jane [MSFT| (Expert):
Q: Guys, so what about feedback items #163297, #82418? It's a shame that browser cannot download all images on a page! More on issue in Google Groups: http://tinyurl.com/lj3wk
A: Your issues will be considered for a future release of IE.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Can we look forward to incremental releases of IE7 which incorporate new features, or will we only see security updates until each new major version arrives?
A: We have not historically provided incremental feature releases of products and do not plan to do so after IE7. Each incremental release becomes something that the web community and Microsoft need to continually test and support for a long time. It's also confusing for users to keep track of what version they have.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will IE 7.5 be available for XP? Thank you.
A: IE7 will be available for XPSP2 and later. At the moment, there's no such thing as IE7.5.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: will the IE blog remain active after RTM? or will it just kind of fizzle out?
A: We fully intend to keep the IE blog going - we have lots of great ideas we want to share about future releases, and we want to keep the dialog open with the community and hear your great ideas too!

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: In IE6 you could get an Email Sent when an external site changes via Work Offline then Schedule. It appears that this functionality is gone in IE7. Will it be put back before release?
A: Scheduled synchronization of Offline favorites is not available in IE7.

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Any possibility of delaying the AU release to be more than a few weeks after the download is available. Working for a company that runs numerous third-party web apps that won't certify or support IE7 until they've had a chance to test on the final versio?
A: if you're not ready for the AU please look at the “Options for Blocking Automatic Delivery” section of our Automatic Delivery of Internet Explorer 7 article.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: How does Microsoft's Live strategy play into IE7?
A: IE7 was built to support the wide range of web sites out there today and in the future including our Live sites. We know that we need to support all popular sites equally well.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Are there developer tools/tweaks that remain that will allow for Web apps to work better in IE7, than, say, Firefox or Opera?
A: For developer tools see teh downloads at http://msdn.microsoft.com/ie/downloads/default.aspx the develoepr toolbar and Fiddler in particular help web devs troubleshoot issues.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How deeply integrated with XP/Vista will IE7 be? By that, I mean, will other Windows applications rely on aspects of IE to work properly?
A: IE7 replaces IE6, hence if other applications were calling IE6 for functionality, that will now be handled by IE7

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Thanks for answering the WSUS question! ;)
A: You're welcome.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will the IE7 team be doing any updates to the IE automation objects (BeforeNavigate2, DocumentComplete, etc). If so, will they be adding new functionality? (NewTabWindow, etc) ?
A: In addition to my answer above, I should note that there's an update on the Navigate api to open in a new foreground or background tab.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: On the IE Plugin website, is it possible to have more separation of the plugins into deeper categories (as of right now, they are listed by number of downloads, which makes it hard for new plugins to get noticed)?
A: We're definitely working on making the IEAddons site easier to navigate. Stay tuned.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Protected Mode: Please offer even better documentation. For instance, we've got a BHO in a DLL (no COM Server) that must write to the My Documents folder. We've still no clue what to change so that IE hosts this BHO as elevated.
A: See the article at http://msdn.microsoft.com/ie/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/ietechcol/dnwebgen/protectedmode.asp this covers the issue you refer to. If you need more please give us specific feedback so we can furhter improve the docs.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will there ever be a feature in IE that will allow the user to set their temporary files to automatically delete after so many days like the history does?
A: Thanks for the feedback, we'll consider this for future releases. If you haven't already, please log a suggestion bug at our connect.microsoft.com site, thanks!

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Hi. Why isnt it possible to open sites from your favorites in new tabs?

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What is the teams favorite new part of IE7?
A: Everything. :-) As the networking PM, I'm delighted by the number of fixes we've made over IE6.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Was IE 7 built using C++ or C#?
A: Primarily C++

Sean [MS] (Expert):
Q: why are DTD's not supported in RSS feeds in IE, but in outlook 2007? do they both not use the Windows RSS platform?
A: DTDs are a Denial-of-Service security issue that impacts the IE more directly than Outlook because IE supports background downloads for feeds (while Outlook only downloads feeds while it is running). A malicious feed can use a DTD to cause the parser to use 100% of your CPU and take up lots of memory. If this happens while you're using Outlook, you could just shut down Outlook, and then remove the feed the next time you start it up. With IE, we have background downloads, so it if it happened, you wouldn't be able to do anything about it. So IE takes a conservative approach and blocks DTDs.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: In prior releases of our application, we used an MSIE mechanism to render XML documents in the browser. It is now broken in MSIE 7 and the behavior is not to launch the app, but to simply display the XML verbatim. Has this changed now?
A: What mechanism did you use? When you say "Display it verbatim", is it syntax highlighted, or plain text?

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: In CSS2 Opera has 94% Supporting And firefox 91%, Why IE7 (as I read) has only 56%?
A: Those stats have been discounted. We've worked hard in IE7 to improve the CSS implementation see http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/08/22/712830.aspx We know we have more work to do and are looking forward to it in a future release. Your feedback will help us prioritise the work so we deliver on the most useful functionality for web devs.

Sean [MS] (Expert):
Q: Hey what is the date for IE7 RTM in hebrew?
A: We'll announce the dates for localized versions of IE once we announce the final RTM date.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Given the superiority of MSFT Update to Windows Update (much faster BITS and less glitches) and given that MSFT Update became available June 6, 2005 why don't you just make it automatic/mandatory to update people to Microsoft Update the newest version?
A: We like Microsoft Update as well. There's a number of reasons that WindowsUpdate continues to exist in its current form.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: What is YOUR favourite feature (something a little hidden perhaps) in the new IE?
A: Hm, this is like asking which one my children is my favorite. I love them all. I do confess that I like the ability to open tab groups and to search Wikipedia (one of my very favorite sites) from the Search bar. I also love opening spam email and seeing the Phishing Filter block the sites...

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: when will be released future release of ie?
A: it's too early to say when but we are committed to regular releases moving forward.

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I have sent in my request for RC1, but sill have not recieved it any idieas when that will ship?
A: what was your request?

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: when I am in IE7 and ask it to remove temp files it states it does, but when I go into the folder, they are still there? any reason why this is?
A: What folder are you going into? what files do you find?

Christian (Moderator):
Just a heads-up on time here, we’re now about halfway through today’s chat. Thanks.

Jane [MSFT| (Expert):
Q: Jane: IT DOESN'T WORK. It's not a feature, but a breaking bug!
A: At this point we are only considering very critical issues. We'll continue to work on your issue for a future release of IE.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: When ie7 final in italian?
A: we'll have all of localized versions out within a few months of initial release. They will come in sets every few weeks.

Sean [MS] (Expert):
Q: Is there a time frame yet for the start of the IE8 Beta. Will this be a stand alone Beta as IE7 was tied to Vista?
A: While we have started thinking about the next releases of IE, we haven't announced any dates. Keep an eye on the IEBlog and you'll know as soon as anyone else.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Hi, the answer to the "Is there a Microsoft mechansm where i can report [broken sites] and you can go and help them out?" question was a link to the user-agent changing tool; is there actually such a site?
A: The user-agent string tool allows you to report broken sites. We've found a few sites that are broken for other reasons than the UA string via this tool.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Thanks for easing my deployment worries... Love the new browser its a huge step in the right direction
A: Thanks.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: When I click on a link is there a way to make it open in a new tab rather then the current tab? I dont see that option in the tab settings
A: Middle click on the link or ctrl-click the link.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Will the IE7 team be doing any updates to the IE automation objects (BeforeNavigate2, DocumentComplete, etc). If so, will they be adding new functionality?
A: Not in IE7. Is there something specific that you'd like to see.

Sean [MS] (Expert):
Q: Can Podcasts be configured in the RSS tool to somehow be automatically downloaded and cataloged in Media Player or do I have to buy an iPOD?
A: There are some neat ways to make podcasts work well with Media Player and IE's RSS support. It's a bit long to write up here, but keep an eye on the RSS team blog, and we'll post about how to do it (http://blogs.msdn.com/rssteam)

Christian (Moderator):
Just a reminder, please try to avoid asking the same question more than once. The Experts are working hard to answer everyone's question as they come in. Thanks.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Could the Accept header be changed to reflect IE's current preference for text/html over application/xhtml+xml? This would mean that content negotation scripts would not need revision when you at last add XHTML support to IE.
A: At present, IE's Accept header doesn't include XHTML. It's fair to suggest that once IE supports XHTML, that we reliably sent it first.

Patrick [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: ...could chat with them, to help get these bugs prioritized, and get simplest test cases written.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: can we expect further improvements to the support of cascading style sheets, or are the existing improvements all we're going to get?
A: We're always open to feedback. It's too late to get changes into IE7, but if you have suggestions we'd love to hear them for consideration for our next release

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: please change the way zoom in zoom out funtion work.... I mean it should be like Office 2007 Beta drag bar
A: I will take this feedback to the rest of the IE Team for consideration in future IE releases. Thank you for requesting!

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: is it possible to slip stream IE 7 into an xp installation?
A: IE7 installs on Windows XP. What exactly do you mean by slipstream?

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is it possible to provide a command line ability to launch multiple tabs?I know you can setup IE7 to open multiple tabs as your "homepage" however, I need to be able to have several desktop links, .vbs, or .bat files on my users desktops to launch the Intranet(s), partner sites, etc. Running the "partner sites" shortcut should launch one window with several tabs each going to our partner sites.
A: I don't believe there is a way to do this unfortunately. We'll consider this for future releases though, thanks for teh feedback!

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What do you feel about the Firefox and Opera browsers? Any plans for implementing features that they already have?
A: The IE team is well acquainted with a wide range of browser products, including those and others (e.g. Maxthon, Avant Browser). I think it's fair to say that we're all looking at each others work in addition to innovating on our own.

Patrick [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: ...could chat with them, to help get these bugs prioritized, and get simplest test cases written.
A:... provide the simplest repro case possible; test on multiple machines / configurations; provide as much info as possible in the bug.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Have you added any more CSS 3 support since RC1?
A: There are no changes to the CSS functionality since RC1. Some CSS3 selectors are already supported in RC1. We are looking to do further CSS work in the next release of IE.

Sean [MS] (Expert):
Q: Why can’t I see embedded (i.e. you tube) videos in my rss feeds, I hate the fact that I must open a new tab just to view it. Could we get this in finally version?
A: We block all exectuable code from running in feeds, which means that you can't watch videos in a feed (as you've noticed). We're looking into making some changes to allow these sorts of things to work in the next release.

Jane [MSFT| (Expert):
Q: Any of the following fixed in the release? 211115, 174035, 166038, 80910
A: We have made a few changes for the final release of IE7 which might have addressed your issues. Otherwise the issues you submitted will be considered for a future release of IE.

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: many of the questions you're answering are already widley available on the web. is it discouraging to see no one uses the new search box?
A: I guess I look at it this way, people want to get the information from the source so they can be be sure :)

rezanour (Expert):
Q: Why was the decision made to hide and move the standard menu-bar (“File, Edit, View, etc”) down from the first line? And, why can’t it be moved to the top of the window to be consistent with all previous Window’s utilities?
A: The decision to make the menubar hide-able was made so that during the majority of your browsing time when your not using the menu, you have more screen real estate to show the web content. The new shortcut menus on the right hand side (Tools, Page, etc) are designed so that most users won't even need to use the menu bar at all, since the most common items are there.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is #163297 a showstopper? The browser doesn't download all images -- this is horrible!
A: This bug should be resolved for RTM. If you find a solid repro site for RTM, please send me email. ericlaw at microsoft

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: How do you guys feel about people saying that IE is just playing "catch up" or that you are just copying features out of Firefox and other browsers?
A: I think they're not looking at the entirety of IE7. While there are certainly parts of IE7 that other browsers already have, there are a bunch of innovative features in IE7 that no other browser has or does as well. For instance, Protected Mode for IE7 on Vista brings a new level of additional security to the industry, and our RSS platform work really opens up RSS to not just IE but all Windows applications. In general, we're all trying to solve similar issues so it's not really surprising that there are similarities between all of our implementations.

Sean [MS] (Expert):
Q: Why do all item have to be marked as read, what about a check box. FEED VIEWER
A: There is a check box. It's on the right-hand side underneath the control box. Just click to remove the check-mark, and the items won't get marked as read.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Will be IE7 for Windows Vista release as separate package?
A: No, IE7 for Vista will ship as part of Vista.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: EricLaw: are you delighted with IE7 being unable to download all pictures on page when being on 128k DSL line?
A: I think you'll find that this bug no longer repros on IE7 RTM. Again, send me mail if you find a site that has this issue.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Jagshemash! I love IE7 and really looking forward to IE7 RTM! Keep up the good work. High 5!
A: Thanks.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is the IE7 Update going to include .NET?
A: No.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why was the decision made to hide and move the standard menu-bar (“File, Edit, View, etc”) down from the first line? And, why can’t it be moved to the top of the window to be consistent with all previous Window’s utilities?
A: We hid the classic menu by default since we took all of the functionality that was available from the classic menu and actually bubbled it up into top level UI more easily accessible from the command bar. As for why it doesn't appear above the address bar, we wanted to make sure that the IE7 expereince was consistent across XP and Vista.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: ... Chris Wilson, or similar, can you give a % of how confident you guys are with this new release? I would personally give it a 70% based on my testing... but maybe my view is not complete. Thoughts?
A: We're confident in the IE7 release. Percentage of what? Statistics are notoriously unreliable and subjective measurements even if I understood what we were measuring :)

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How long do you think it will be before the Firefox people rip off your UI for their old skool browser? Does it annoy you when this happens?
A: Well, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, right. :-)

Patrick [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Thanks to the team develop IE7, at least it is only one browser that render Thai correctly--not stupid like firefox. Only one question, is the final version still keep cloasing itseft in some certain situation like happended in previouse beta and rc1?
A: Thanks for the kudos - nice to get that feedback. Please log the issue about IE7 closing unexpectedly in the connect DB. Be sure to specify the circumstances under which this happens in as much detail as possible. Currently I'm not aware of any open issue with IE7 (as opposed to any 3rd part add-ons) that would cause this behavior.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Does IE7 use any WPF features (my guess is negative on this ), and/or do you plan on using it in future releases when WPF is more prominent?
A: No, IE7 doesn't doesn't use any WPF features. We'll continue to evaluate whether WPF helps us accomplish our user goals.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: A user, here. When I downloaded IE7, I could no longer access my bank account. They said they wouldn't support a Beta product. Is that sort of problem fixed now, or must I wait for the fial release?
A: We've worked with a lot of websites so they allow access to IE7. Those websites shoudl be allowing access today.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: How many developers are (have been) working on IE7?
A: A lot. :)

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: IE6 had a feature in Offline Browsing where you could set up a scheduled check of a website and it would send you an email with a link to the page. This isn't there in IE7 as far as I know. What should one do?
A: Explicitly marking a webpage as offline isn't supported anymore in IE7. The best work around for this is RSS so that users can subscribe to any changes that might occur.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Just wanted to say THANKS for all the hard work and consideration put into place for making IE7.0 the best it could be! Your all doing great answering all these questions too!
A: Thanks.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will Fiddler continue to be available & be updated after the IE7 is released? Will we see addon to the Dev Toolbar too? How about more HTTPS support?
A: I plan to keep Fiddler going, and the Dev Toolbar has a future as well. I'm not sure that the two will ever meet. As for HTTPS support, I'm working on it.

Patrick [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will you be releasing the final version of IEAK 7 along with IE 7?
A: Yes

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: RE: Q: [166], Dave Massy, Protected Mode: I read the document your're mentioning. It's still not clear, however, how you can run BHOs that reside in a DLL as elevated. The article just describes COM Servers, EXEs etc. Please offer more samples as well.
A: A BHO is in effect a COM server. It runs in the IE process so will need to make the necessary calls to write to the users documents folder without the credential prompt. Sorry if that is not clear in the doc.

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Uche: "it is, you can either right click on the link and choose to open in a new tab or you can middle click on the link and it will open in a new tab" yeah that i know, but i meant from the favorites menu (near the view, tools, help etc.)
A: unfortunately you can't do this from the favorites menu. I will make sure to look into this option for future releases. thanks

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When I ctl-mouse-scroll in IE7 to get a larger font, the screen grows horizontal scroll bars. Any way to get IE7 to just reformat the text/screen like FF.
A: ctrl-mouse-scroll is zooming the entire page. If you want to change only the text size, go to the "page" menu and select a different text size from the "text size" menu.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Could you post a full css-compatibility-list, so we know which css-features are supported in IE7?
A: The CSS ref docs on MSDN at http://msdn.microsoft.com/ie/reference/css/default.aspx show the CSS supported in IE.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Are you going to be adding support for "Open Last Closed Tab", like the MuvExToE plugin does, in future builds?
A: Not in IE7. We're be done adding features for a while.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Patrick many many "popunders" circumvent the IE popup blockers in IE6 SP2, IE7 and Vista RC2 and for those you don't have a website. Ayk popunders are a culprit for resizing IE pages behind the scenes as well.
A: First, ensure that you don't have any malware installed. Secondly, IE7 has a cool feature: put the origin of the popup in the restricted zone and JS from that domain (even if pulled in by another domain) will not run.

Sean [MS] (Expert):
Q: I am having trouble with my engadget sub. in the feed viewer. It takes entirely too long to view. 1 unread item could take as long as thirty second. Same goes for there sister sites. What could be the problem.
A: We haven't seen this sort of issue -- and several of us are subscribed to engadget. Engadget includes several inline images in each item, which sometimes can take a while to fully load. If you had some sort of blocker tool (anti-spyware or anti-adware, for example), it's possible that each image might be stalled in some way -- but I'm just guessing. Make sure you're using the most recent version of the browser, and if you're still having trouble, I'd recommend deleting the feed and re-subscribing to see if it makes any difference.

Jane [MSFT| (Expert):
Q: 9.) When is the IE Feedback site going to be fixed? Uploads from IE7 don't work, uploads are not viewable by testers/devs, and most importantly, there is no option to target for a future release. bugs are being resolved when they are STILL major issues th
A: We are working with the team who manages feedback sites to resolve these problems. I believe the issue with attachments is currently being worked on. As for targetting issues for a future release, we close those bugs as postponed. Issues that were closed as postponed and won't fix will be considered for a future release of IE.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: whats the last internal build of ie7?
A: the one we are going to ship :)

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: we saw the RC1 will not work with expired SSL-certificates with ouer test-websystems. is it possible to hide the ie7-warning-page in default?
A: You can click through expired certificates' warning page if you'd like. Better would be to update the certificate, of course.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there an addon for IE7, to fix the location of the menubar (not the registry hack), and the command bar, and the stop/reload icons. In RC1 they are in the wrong spot, and we want to move them to the correct spot.
A: There is no add-on that performs these actions. Customizability of the interface is not where we want it to be in IE7, we're considering different improvements we can make here in future releases. Thanks,

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: For Q89, actually, \low is NOT there. We have to create it beore creating files, on both xp+ie7 and vista. Is protected mode stuff for ie7 same for xp and vista?
A: Protected Mode is a Windows Vista only feature. It does not exist for XP.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Any chance of allowing site to make the "IE warning bar" larger when an ActiveX control needs to be activated? Our users aren't always as observent as they should be, plus at high resolutions it gets very small.
A: We can't allow sites to modify the Information Bar for security purposes. We have tried to balance the size between taking up a lot of real estate and being discoverable. We've seen some sites add content to their pages that direct their users to look to the information bar.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Hi. Do you plan to support the CSS property: opacity from the upcoming CSS3: http://www.w3.org/TR/css3-color/#transparency It is already supported by Firefox and Opera. IE6 uses the propritary filter......Alpha.
A: It's something we'll be looking into for a future release of IE. Your feedback along with scenarios as to why a particular feature is going to be useful will help us prioritise that work.

Jane [MSFT| (Expert):
Q: feedback id: 222980 on the connect site. table height = 100% with table-layout:fixed causes all row heights to be ignored. Is this going to be fixed?
A: Hi, your issue will not be fixed for IE7, but it will be considered for a future release of IE.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: any chance of single instance setting and force new external links on a new tab?
A: The setting in the Internet control panel generally works. The notable exception is links launched from Outlook Express. This is a bug fixed by Windows Live Mail desktop.

Q: in the final ie7, is there a way to move the menu's around? for example the address bar above or below the menu toolbar?
A: unfortunately there isn't

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Follow-up to Q152: Increasing screen real-estate is good... however, with the new layout, I cannot combine the address bar and tool-icons all into a single bar like I currently do with IE6. Also, not having the "standard" menu causes a lot of confusion.
A: You can turn on classic menus permanently if you like. We know we need to add more customizability to the command area after IE7.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: I just joined this chat, sorry if someone asked it before. Can you tell more about your plans for IE8? Would be great.
A: There is going to be an IE8 and we are planning it now. it's too early to discuss details but your feedback will help us to focus on what is important to you. You can expect us to continue to invest in security, user experience and developer platform.

Sean [MS] (Expert):
Q: From a deployment side if disabling anti-spyware applications and AV clients is unrealestic (but I can throttle down both from the consoles) what best practices would you put into place to have a successfull deployment? I am looking at over 1000 workstat
A: We recently posted about the anti-malware application issue (http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/10/11/IE7-Installation-and-Anti_2D00_Malware-Applications.aspx). As noted in that post, our recommendation to disable those apps is a general recommendation to help you avoid problems, though from our tests, most anti-malware apps don't cause problems. The main thing I would suggest is to test with the applications you have currently. If you don't run into any problems with those particular applications, you will most likely be fine in your deployment.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Have you already done the rtm, and final, build?
A: We never know if the current build is going to be the final build until we ship it to the web :)

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: I just joined this chat, sorry if someone asked it before. Can you tell more about your plans for IE8? Would be great.
A: There's going to be one. It'll be very nice. :) We really don't have much more to say beyond that.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Are there any plans to make future versions of IE pass the Acid 2 test, Additionaly have any improvments been made on that since RC1?
A: See http://blogs.msdn.com/ie for our take on ACID2. Other than bugfixes, we have not added new CSS features for RTM.

Patrick [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Patrick many many "popunders" circumvent the IE popup blockers in IE6 SP2, IE7 and Vista RC2 and for those you don't have a website. Ayk popunders are a culprit for resizing IE pages behind the scenes as well.
A: I realize some sites are pretty creative in finding ways around pop-up blocker. We will continue to improve pop-up blocker. If you want to see us make progress quicker, try to capture the script code that is responsible for the pop-up and report it to us. http://fiddlertool.com/fiddler/ is a great tool for that kind of thing.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: For answer to Q159, you mean xp+ie7 does not have protected mode? however, ie7 extension on xp gets access denied error when accessing non "low" folders. no fault on xp+ie6. no fault to access "low" folders with xp+ie7.
A: IE7 on XP does not have protected mode. We need changes in the kernel and other parts of the Vista in order to make protected mode work.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: My Web Developer Priority: 1. CSS3 box-sizing Selector ;)
A: Great feedback. Even more useful woudl be to understand why you feel that is P1 for you. Justification and scenarios help us prioritise work for future releases. Thanks.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: There will be something new (Codename "WOW Effect" in IE7 RTM)?
A: "Wow effect" is a feature of some sound cards, I believe. The only "Wow effect" in IE is after you install it and say "wow!" :-)

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Will the IEAK be available for download at the same time IE is released, or is there a new deployment method now?
A: Yes, the IEAK will be available at the same time.

Scott Graff (Expert):
Q: Can I setup tabs so I have one with my main webpage (home) and other tabs default to another site? currently ie7 does not work doing this
A: Yes you can do this very easily. first open up the tabs as you would like them to appear and then you can either create a Favorite Tabs Group or set that tab set to be your default home set. To create the favorite tabs group, click on the Add to Favorites button (on the left hand side of the tabs, the gold star with the green plus symbol) and select Add Tab Group to Favorites. Then you can go to Favorites (gold star) and click on the blue arrow that is displayed to the right of the new tab group when you hover over it. This will open all of those sites in new tabs (in addition to any already open tabs). To add the set of tabs as your defualt home page, click on the drop down arrow next to the Home button on the toolbar and select Add or Change Home Page. Select the "Use the current tab set as your home page."and click Yes. NOw when you launch IE 7, all of those tabs will load by default.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Will IE7 support hotpatching on WS2003, Vista, XP or XP 64 bit? Installing browser patches without rebooting would be outstanding.
A: Unfortunately, IE7 will not support hotpatching.

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Q: [221] I personally like the bar smaller :)
A: Glad to hear it

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Will we ever get the ability to have a a toolbar like in FireFox where I can just drop my favorites on it? That type of bookmarks toolbar makes it much easier to surf. And I'm not talking about the "Links" folder that takes like 4 steps to post a link
A: You can drag favorites into the links bar.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: As you move forward with future IE versions will you be relying on measuring you standard compatibility against sites like AcidTest.com more & more? Or will Microsoft also build some test site that browsers can measure themselvels against? ;)
A: We'll be watching a variety of tests including ACID2. We'll be lookign through feedback from web developers so we deliver on what is the most imprtant functionality to them.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: follow-up for Max: Q152: "consistent across XP and Vista" -- does that mean the classic menu that we are familiar with and comfortable with is going away in Vista? The classic menu is great because the same things are found in the same place everywhere.
A: the classic menu isn't "going away" in vista, but different command models are being exposed by default in vista, yes. the problem with the classic menu is that although it's consistent across all applicaitons, it doesn't necessarily offer the best command model for any one given application. So while we don't want to remove it completely, we don't think it necessarily makes sense to be the default for all applications.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Are you gonna to improve the zoom system in RTM?
A: We haven't made any major changes to zoom since RC1.

Sean [MS] (Expert):
Q: any possiblities for an archive feature for RSS so if you were to get news today, you could archive it so you could read it another day or reference back to it?
A: By default, we keep 200 items. You can read any of these items just by clicking on the feed again. You can increase the limit (up to 2500).

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: EricLaws[MSFT]: That's not the case. Currently IE includes application/xml+xhtml with the same implied quality as text/html, because of */* . See http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec14.html . Do you see the problem?
A: I think the difference between explicit and implicit is pretty obvious. It's safe to assume that IE7 will not accept XHTML even when the Accept header gives the generic */*. Yes, this is a known issue.

Jane [MSFT| (Expert):
Q: Re: 162 Feedback needs to be fixed then, such that closed is not the final state. Closed implies that it is not being tracked, and testers / developers are likely to ignore adding new feedback and test cases if it is closed.
A: I realize that closing issues is misleading. Just because they won't get fixed in IE7 does not mean they won't be considered for future releases. We are going through the closed issues reviewing the bugs and closing duplicated. These issues will then be sent to the development teams for further investigation.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: When is the offical release date?
A: This Month. No matter how many times people ask that question here today. The answer will remain the same:)

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there a way to launch multiple tabs in a single window through IE automation objects?
A: Yes, I believe so. Once you have your window, you can call Navigate on it with a new flag that opens the URI in background or foreground tabs.

Sean [MS] (Expert):
Q: Q179 I meant if i have more than one unread item I want to keep certain ones as unread
A: Unfortunately, that particular feature doesn't exist. We're looking at adding it to future releases.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: How does one become a ALPHA user of IE8? I haven't had so much funn since Win2K was release.
A: Glad you had fun. We did too (well, mostly...) Keep reading the IE Blog - we'll be sure to announce IE.next builds there.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I understand that I can use Virtual PC to test in IE6 but do I not need another Windows license to be able to install XP in the virtual machine?
A: Yes, that is the case.

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Moderators: I am new to this chat, are questions answered in order or do you just have to keep jumping in?
A: Just jump in

Jane [MSFT| (Expert):
Q: Bug 163297, anyone?
A: This bug will not be fixed in IE7, but we will consider it for a future release.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What are your thoughts on writing extensions to IE7 in .NET 2.0? Good, Bad, (it sure is pretty).
A: It's quite easy to do, and very powerful. There are some downsides, including performance and problems with side-by-side (e.g. you can only have one version of the framework loaded in the IE process).

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Re: 262. No you can't drag all links to the toolbar... any JS link complains, and any link with the same name as an existing complains.
A: True. We tightened security around JS links because there were issues there.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: "A: We've worked with a lot of websites so they allow access to IE7. Those websites shoudl be allowing access today." makes you think its being releaed today, no?
A: Some websites needed to be updated as they refused to recognise IE7. If a website is blockign access to IE7 then they need to update. You can use the User Agent utility at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9517db9c-3c0d-47fe-bd04-fad82a9aac9f&DisplayLang=en to have IE7 pretend to be IE6 and get access.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Ok last try, In IE6 you could set a site to Work Offline mode then setup a Scheduled Task and then have that schedule send you an email when that page changes. In IE7 this doesn't exist unless you hid it in a new place. please say its out there!
A: As stated above, no this feature is not present in IE7. Again, we're looking at this scenario for future versions of IE.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Any suggestions for enterprise rollouts? Patch level of ie6, is one more successfull then others? etc?
A: It's always best to have the fully patched version of IE6.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why do some websites content scroll with a jerky motion while others scroll smoothly? Is this an ie7 bug or is it a problem with the website? Thanks

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Is C# support being considered for future versions?
A: You can use C# today with IE using interop. We'll certainly be working to make it even easier to use C# against IE in the future.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why do some websites content scroll with a jerky motion while others scroll smoothly? Is this an ie7 bug or is it a problem with the website? Thanks
A: Do you have the "Smooth scrolling" option enabled in Tools | Internet Options | Advanced?

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Is there a documentation of differences between the different versions of mshtml.dll that ship with vista and xp?
A: There are no differences between IE's page rendering betwen vista and xp.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Are you going to be adding support for aliases like MuvExToE - IE Aliases has implemented?
A: not in IE7.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why do you all refer to WU(Windows Update) when MSFT made Microsoft Update--a newer better version available over 15 months ago but failed to showcase that it did.? There are technet and msdn papers on it having a much better BITS among other components .
A: We often refer to the two interchangably. WU already advertises MU rather heavily.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Q. 161 - Isn't the RSS answer a Cop-Out. RSS is site defined, not User Defined. I can't make an RSS feed on a site that doesn't have a feed! Are you saying that it's ok to take away features that people use?
A: There were unfortunately many technical reasons why that feature conflicted with other changes we made in IE7 and hence why we couldn't bring it forward. It was a difficult decision to be sure. the work around of RSS does require site work and can't be done exclusively by the end user, it is true, but as an overall mechanism we believe RSS provides a better experience for both end users and site maintainers in terms of keeping users up to date with the latest content.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Last question, I promise. As a developer, tracking the progress of IE7, I am personally *very* scared that it is being released soon, at its current state. I know there is an internal push to get this out, but I am far from confident. From...
A: what's the question?

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: look at this: http://www.positioniseverything.net/explorer/escape-floats.html Will you fix it?
A: That particular issue needs some more architectural work that we expect to get to in a future release. The other issues listed on position is everything have been addressed in IE7.

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Assistive techies are wary of upgrading to IE7 (http://therangerstation.blogspot.com/2006/10/quick-news-how-to-stop-automatic.htm). Will you warn potential upgraders of incompatibilities with existing assistive tech (Virgo, WebbIE, Jaws, Window-Eyes)?
A: we have written a blog post to help plan for IE7:http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/10/06/IE7-Is-Coming-This-Month_2E002E002E00_Are-you-Ready_3F00_.aspx

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: any possible updates for resumable downloads directly from ie 7 and not by using a 3rd party vendor such as by example getright?
A: IE7 will resume downloads if the server indicates ranging support and the cache file is available. It's not as robust as we'd like, and this is something we're looking at for the future. For now, as you've noted, this is a space filled by extensions.

Reza [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What about bugs when IE7 eats 100% CPU time on some pages with heavy jscripts?
A: That is usually a bug in the jscript (ie. Infinite loops, etc..). That is not an IE bug

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: will be a change-list available between ie6SP2 an IE7?
A: Unfortunately, no. You can see http://msdn.microsoft.com/ie for a large list of the major changes.

Christian (Moderator):
We have a few minutes left for today’s chat. If you have any last minute questions, please submit them asap. The Experts will answer as many questions as they can in the time remaining. Thanks!

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Regarding extensibility: Writing toolbars is really tough, I know I could write a live toolbar button, but when will the "old" be broken in favor of something "new"? The old is really old and really hard to write for.
A: We are looking to make it easier to write extensions in the future. We will likely continue to support the current model for writing extensions so that people do not have to rewite all their extensions for a future verison of IE.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: I have been trying to load the software for my hp IPAQ pocket PC and IE seems to be blocking it. It won't even open -- something about active content.
A: If you're trying to run the software from a CD or harddrive and it uses script or activex controls, IE blocks this (since XPPS2 actually) through a feature called Local Machine Zone lockdown. You can let the code run by clicking the Information Bar.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I take it, Eric, you meant to use MSN search just to get general hits on Easter Eggs--that you weren't talking about anything in Windows Vista or IE7 specifically.
A: yes, I was joking. Microsoft is no longer permitted to ship easter eggs in our products.

Jane [MSFT| (Expert):
Q: WOW, really surprised that Bug: 202438 isn't considered annoying enough to be fixed in IE7 GA. I surely hope the "Future Release" that fixes it is the first one after IE7GA. I almost always use other "programs" to open a link, so this is a big annoyance.
A: I undestand how this behaviour can be annoying, but only issues that meet very high bar level are being fixed for IE7. We will be looking at your issue and working on it for a future release.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Is there any impact on support for the IElementBehavior interfaces in IE7 or Vista?
A: No. These should continue to function as before.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: will be a change-list (IE6 vs IE7) be avaialble?
A: Unfortunately, no. You can see http://msdn.microsoft.com/ie for a large list of the major changes.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Is SVG support going to be added?
A: we're looking at it for a future release.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is it possible to control tabs using automation? for example, determine the number of open tabs, close specific ones, etc.?
A: Not in IE7. You can open new tabs, but not manipulate them otherwise. This is an unfortunate limitation for plugin authors (including me) and we're looking at improvements for future releases.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Sorry. Why box-szing is so important. I develop RIA's, and often i want to use the full screen (like a real application). But because the w3c-box-model doesnt allow to use 100% with padding, inner-div for padding don't work, because the are % in size
A: Thanks.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: At this point both in conjunction with Vista and IE7's protected mode are there any plans in the wings or in the frantic rush to Vista RTM about Oct 25 to improve the deployment hassles of UAC whose security philosophy is very good but execution is full ofglitches that will keep the phones ringing for your enterprise support and your Convergys (lol) support contractor for individual sub enterprise users?
A: The UAC team has been continually improving the user experience of UAC.

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will there be any IE7 launch promo like for IE4? Any MSN live alerts we can subscribe to to be notified when it ships?
A: you can subscribe to our blog at blogs.msdn.com/ie and we will be posting when IE7 is available on there

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Will be IE7 RTM firstly release for TAP or / and other programs (like Vendor Programs)?
A: We plan to release English IE7 simultaneously to all users.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: How long time will be between compilation of RTM (final build) and its release at Automatic Updates?
A: A few weeks is the plan. We recommend that people be ready by Nov 1st if they wish to use the blocking tool to prevent AU deployment.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Great work, my complements to your team, have a happy IE7 RTM. ;) Please don't ship on Halloween! :P
A: thanks.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will existing GPOs work with IE7 or will IE7 incorporate a new ADM file?
A: I believe existing GPO still applies, but the IEAK should offer a new ADM file to control new options.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Although you are not disclosing the release date today, will there be warning of the date or are we going to have to continue to monitor the IE website each morning until we see it?

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Can i assign any shorcuts for each of my favorites(ex. Ctrl + 1, Ctrl + 2 etc..), so that once i have my IE 7 opened, i can just press the shortcute keys to open my favorites?
A: Not at present (those keys are used to flip between tabs).

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Although you are not disclosing the release date today, will there be warning of the date or are we going to have to continue to monitor the IE website each morning until we see it?
A: you can subscribe to the blog and that way you'll get notified when there is new information on the website :)

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Not a question, but a request. I have $25 (others may back me up with more) to personally pass on to the developer that removes the command bar from the tabs row. It is the one thing that makes me want to cry, when I think that this is going live in Oct.
A: We'll pass that offer on to our devs...

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will the IE7 RTM contain WGA ?
A: Yes.

Tony Chor [MS] (Expert):
Q: Hi, i know this question have been ask before, but is there a possibility to include the css3 feature box-sizing, for switching the box-model. i don't like the document-switch, because boxsizingmodels schouldn't be part of document-standards
A: Not for IE7.

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When you set IE to work offline in 6 the status is not communicated to other IE windows or programs such as Outlook Express and Windows Media Player. Is this fixed in IE 7?
A: I've never seen this problem in IE6, and it should not exist in IE7 either.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Q: Will IE7 service packs be tied to Vista SP releases?
A: As IE7 is part of Vista it is reasonable to expect that Vista service packs will contain any service pack material for IE7. It's a little early to say exactly what will be in any SPs though :)

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Are you going to answer the question about document.URL giving legacy file URIs before the end of the chat?
A: As noted above, this change is likely by-design. Feel free to contact me for more info. ericlaw at microsoft

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Can i assign any shorcuts for each of my favorites(ex. Ctrl + 1, Ctrl + 2 etc..), so that once i have my IE 7 opened, i can just press the shortcute keys to open my favorites?
A: There's no way to do this right now, although an add-on could be written that could accomplish this.

Christian (Moderator):
Well that wraps it up for today’s chat. Thanks to everyone for participating, and also thanks to the Experts for being here to answer everyone’s questions.

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Uche[MSFT]: Those resources for planning for IE7 seem to be aimed at techies. I was worrying about ordinary screen reader users at home. Is there a communication aimed at them? (Or is compatibility so good that none is needed?)
A: well it is not a silent update, they'll see a prompt and be asked to choose to download it

Uche[MSFT] (Expert):

A: Thanks everyone

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Bye, Everyone! Nice Chatting with you :)

EricLaw[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I'm a broken record ;) Any chance bug 208423 (Authorware Web Player calls to Javascript failing) will be fixed? If not I fear it is going to break a fair amount of learning content... Thanks.
A: I'll take a look.

Dave Massy (Moderator):
Bye all. Sorry we didn't manage to get to all your questions. Thanks.

Christian (Moderator):
We will post the transcript from today’s chat here in the next few days: <http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/chats/transcripts/default.mspx>

Q: I'm a broken record ;) Any chance bug 208423 (Authorware Web Player calls to Javascript failing) will be fixed? If not I fear it is going to break a fair amount of learning content... Thanks.
A: Your issue has not been fixed. I'll try to investigate it and see what we can do. Only very critical issues get fixed at this point, so I can't promise the issue will be fixed in the final release of IE7. We'll consider it for a future release of IE.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Thanks everybody, it's time to leave. I hope this was informative for you all.

Reza [MSFT] (Expert):
