Introductions:

Allison [MSFT] (Expert):
Hi, I’m Allison and I am a PM on the IE Team working on the technical beta program.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Hi, I'm Chris Wilson, platform architect for IE.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Hi! My name is Eric Lawrence, and I'm a security Program Manager on the IE team.

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Hi, I'm Helen and I work on the user experience of tabs and favorites.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Hi, my name is John Hrvatin and I'm the PM for the developer tools and script engine integration.

Seth [MSFT] (Expert):
Hi, I'm Seth and I'm a PM with the User Experience team

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Hello! I'm Kristen and I work on the IE Feedback and Release team.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will you plan to put download manager in next version of IE8 ? we did not see it in IE8 RC1 yet.
A: What are the primary features you're looking for? While we don't have a full download manager, we have implemented resume if the connection fails and downloading of large files.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: We've been having problems with bad HTTP GET requests with IE8 RC1. It appears that bad TCP reassembly may be the culprit. This is document in feedback 404492. I'm willing to take this offline into feedback 404492.
A: @Jerry: Is there a public site that reproduces this problem? We've taken a look at the capture in the CONNECT bug and we haven't been able to come up with any sequence of events that leads to the problem described?

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why does IE8, in particular document.URL, use legacy file URIs even in IE8 standards mode? I thought this compatibility issue was going to be fixed in IE8.
A: We've made no attempt to change the representation of URIs within the DOM, regardless of mode.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: If you add password in Content Advisor then you could not remove it. Please add Interface for user that user could remove his/her password from content advisor in case that user want to remove password and have old password or remove by Admin account.
A: As described in the KB article, you can contact Microsoft support for help on removing a Content Advisor password. If users who didn't know the password were allowed to delete it, it would pretty much eliminate the point of the feature. Content Advisor has basically been replaced by Parental Controls in Vista and later.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why do you post screenshots with ugly JPEG artifacts on the IEBlog? Examples "I found a web page that doesn't work, now what?" and "Compatibility List FAQ". JPEG is for photos, and re-saving a JPEG as a PNG file doesn't undo the damage.
A: Sorry for the trouble, Alex. As you might imagine, we're focusing our energies on other tasks in the product itself.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: If a page renders in Quirks mode, will IE 8 render PNG files like earlier versions of IE would (poorly), or like IE 8 would under Standards mode?
A: No, Quirks Mode doesn't affect how IE8 renders PNG files.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When I close a popped up window in IE8 RC1, I often get an error approximately 1 minute later about the instruction at 0x0125ea13 referencing memory at 0x6363d854 which could not be read. The instance of iexplore.exe for the popup then closes.
A: Problems of this nature are almost always caused by buggy browser add-ons. If you run IE without addons, do you see the same problem? www.enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp#crash

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Suggest: show flag of domain depend on where it located or show flag of top-level-domain and add top-level domain blocker as well for IE8.
A: Thanks for the suggestion.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Any ETA on RTM ?
A: No, not at this time. We're still looking at feedback and making sure we have the right quality.

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there a way to restore my last browsing session automatically, without my interaction? I want to IE restore my last brwosing session at startup without the need to go to Tools > restore my last brwosing session.
A: We've added an option to "Reopen last browsing session" in the "New Tab Page". So if you set your home page to "about:Tabs", then it's only one click to get back to your last browsing session. Hope this helps!

Seth [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: The download manager of IE8 RC1 isn't nice because every download goes in different window - not nicely organized like in other major browsers. Also the download window doesn't provide us with the needed options - pause and others. Will you improve this?
A: There are pros and cons of using a single window for all downloads, but it's certainly an area we'll be considering for further improvement in the future.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @EricLaw: My question was _why_ you have made no effort to fix legacy URI problems.
A: Please elaborate on what exactly you believe the problem to be? What change would solve this problem, and why do you believe that such a change would not break compatibility with more sites than it fixes? Thx!

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I've had trouble using OWA in IE8 RC1. This appears to be the same problem listed in feedbacks 392032 qand 408806. When I open a window to compose an e-mail, I get the login screen. Is work being done to make IE8 and OWA play nicer together?
A: We use OWA extensively internally, and we've fixed a number of problems with this scenario since RC1. thanks!

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How long will the sitelist for compatibility be used for ?
A: As long as it's necessary. I expect the list of sites will reduce dramatically over time.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: We've been having problems with session cookies being passed to new windows, documented in feedback 408806. Has there been any improvement on this since RC1 came out? Can internal builds pass the session cookie bug test listed in 408806?
A: We have resolved a number of problems with Session Cookies since RC1. thanks for submitting a test case!

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Q24: Helen, I want it _automatically_... is there a way? Maby registry hack?
A: I don't know of any registry hack for this.. I think this is a great request and we'll definitely consider it for future versions. Thanks for the suggestion!

Seth [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will you provide a list of buggy add-ons when using IE8 ?
A: We document compatibility issues with top add-ons in our release notes. You can access the RC1 release notes here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/dd441788.aspx

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: With all your talk of interoperability, why have you chosen to artificially restrict carbongrove.com to Internet Explorer? There's no reason why it couldn't work on Firefox, in fact Long Zheng got it working with just User-Agent spoofing and Firebug.
A: Our marketing folks will be delighted to hear that you're interested in the CarbonGrove.com site; we'll pass along your feedback.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How often will de site compatibility list be updated ?
A: The site compatibility list will be updated on the same schedule as (although separately) security updates, so approximately monthly.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: feature request for IE9: add shortcut to software removal in add-on manager ?
A: That's a fine suggestion, thanks!

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why is Quick Launch coupled with Internet Explorer?
A: I'm not sure I understand...can you describe what you mean by "quick launch coupled with Internet Explorer"?

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: SW#1.) Rumor had it that has Layout was going to go away - but we still see it in IE8 RC1 - are the rumors false?
A: the has Layout system is still around for compatibility in quirks and IE7 standards mode - but it's not used in IE8 standards mode.

Seth [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Are you aware of Microsoft Research add-on making opening new tabs slow? Any action on that?
A: Yes, this is a known issue that we're looking into.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will sites using the X-UA-comp tag be removed automatically from the compatibility site list ?
A: They are not removed automatically from the compat site list, but they will be rendered in IE8 standards mode.

Allison [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When IE8 will be final release?
A: We're still looking at feedback and making sure we have the right quality.

Tony [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I've run into problems with margins disappearing in IE8 when markup is updated dynamically (i.e. objects added/removed from the DOM). Having the document render using the IE7 layout engine removes the issue. Is this a known bug?
A: Yes, this is a known issue.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Can you please discuss a roadmap for features envisioned in future versions of Internet Explorer (for example SVG)?
A: We can't really discuss a roadmap for future features right now.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will IE9 still support quirks mode ? Would you consider dropping it ?
A: I expect IE will continue to support quirks mode for a long time to come, as do other current browsers.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: It seems the internal teams developing Microsoft sites would be some of the first people to know about IE8. Why is it that most of the Microsoft properties request compatibility mode?
A: As with most major properties on the web, Microsoft-related sites are developed, updated, and modified on their own schedule. The Compatibility features of Internet Explorer 8 allow Microsoft sites (and everyone elses) to being supporting Standards mode on the schedule best suited to their needs.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: SW#2.) IE now presents new rendering differences between doctypes in IE8 Standards mode (that are regressions from IE7) should we expect more of these to come?
A: different doctypes typically affect whether a page is in IE8 Standards Mode or not so I'm not sure what you mean by using different doctypes _within_ IE8 Standards Mode. can you clarify?

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What IE8's LCIE does? Is it similar to Google Chrome protection from crashes?
A: Yes, Google Chrome's process isolation is similar to the LCIE process isolation that we first shipped last year.

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: In QuickTabs view, the thumbnails still look very poor. Why don't you use GDI+ to create the thumbnails, it would nicely resample them? I use GdipGetImageThumbnail, which works perfectly from IE content I got via IViewObject.Draw.
A: Great question. I will pass this information along to the developer. Thanks for the feedback!

Jon Seitel [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: SW#4.) Web Slices (in the little preview window) do not render in IE8 Standards mode... is there plans to fix this before the RTM release?
A: @steve-web:Can you be more specific? What do you mean by "not render"?

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: The Java Plug-In SSV Helper Add-On is very slow at loading (the slowest by far of my many add-ons). As this one is very common, will you help Sun improve its loading speed?
A: Yes, Larry, the IE team is working with Sun on the performance problem with their addon.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Were the stability and resistance to hang ups improved since RC1? The whole browser (not just affected tab) go wacko, if IE8 RC1 hits the page with problematic jscript. Usually I have a lot of trouble with www.korrespondent.net (not everytime, but often).
A: IE has a set of algorithms for determining when to open a new process versus a new thread for a new tab. depending on which happens, you'll see different behavior when one of those tabs crashes. after IE recovers from a crash, it will put each tab in a separate process since it's detected instability in the sites you're currently on.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will Micrisoft.com be updated soon to follow IE8 standards mode ?
A: Sorry, that's really a question for the folks that run Microsoft.com. As noted previously, IE8's compatibility features give sites the ability to plan and deliver updates on their own schedule.

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Could you improve the RSS support of IE by adding live bookmarks feature just like Firefox? In Firefox, it's one click to check , while in IE we need many more clicks. Do a search for Live bookmarks and see.
A: Hi. If I'm reading your question correctly, we do have "live bookmarks". If you go to, say, nytimes.com and click on the feeds button (orange button in command bar), and click on the "Subscribe to this Feed" link on the one page view, the dialog will pop up which allows you the option to "Add to Favorites bar" (check the box). This will then show up on your Favorites bar, and when the feed updates, the item on the Favorites bar will bold. Please let me know if I misunderstood your question.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Can you shed any light on the SVG development and where and when it will land?
A: Right now we're really focused on finishing up IE8.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will Microsoft Research's "Gazelle" browser technologies be used in future versions of IE?
A: We speak to the MSR team on a regular basis. Some of their architecture is uniquely suited to their scenarios, which do not reflect the full set of existing use-cases of the web.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Between IE7 and IE8, was the ie team working on IE8 the entire time? It seems like much more could have come of it in that period of time
A: Yes, we've been working hard for years now. If you've missed some of our great features, you can learn more at http://blogs.msdn.com/ie.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @JohnHrv [36]: But what about hangups? The whole thing just tanks on that site! :(
A: hangs are unfortunately a different beast. even though the tabs and frame are in different processes, they have the same input queue for messages. this creates great predictability for development within IE as well as extension but does cause a hang to lock-up all of IE.

Seth [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Now that major layout bugs have been fixed in RC1, it's been possible for people to really check their sites to find the smaller issues, of which there are many. Many of us feel that an RC2 is necessary. Will there be one?
A: You can read in more detail about our release plans here: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/11/19/ie8-what-s-after-beta-2.aspx :)

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @EricLaw: Legacy file URIs: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/12/06/file-uris-in-windows.aspx - file URIs are used in preliminary testing, so consistent URIs make testing easier before deploying to to a web server, and improve interoperability also.
A: If I recall correctly (and it's been a long time) the problem is that no browser is fully consistent with the others in handling of File URIs. Our goal in the IE7 timeframe was to remain consistent with prior IE versions.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Can't you ask anyone in your team about such hack? Or how to say IE, always press "Alt + X + L" at startup? (maybe over a shortcut?)
A: Sorry, can you rephrase your question with more context?

Tony [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @tony re: Q14 Will it be addressed before final release? Can you point me to documentation? Thx!
A: We have investigated this issue and intend to have it resolved before the next release.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Chris: You stated sites will begin to start being removed from the IE8 comp list (GREAT!)... would you like it we submit connect feedback reports about sites that render perfectly in standards mode but are on the list to keep you informed?
A: Sure!

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Are there plans for IE9 to have an IE7 compatibility mode as well?
A: Though we understand people are anxious to find out what's in store for the next version of IE, we are not in a place right now to discuss any future IE plans.

Seth [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: The number of sites in the “IE8 Compatibility list” needs to be greatly reduced. Many of the sites on that list didn’t render properly in the beta releases, but now they render perfectly... do you plan on removing many of the sites that now render perfect?
A: We will continue to evaluate the contents of this list on continual basis

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: what about javascript performance? everyone is working on improving javascript performance except IE team.today safari team has announced majore improvements
A: On the contrary, IE8's Javascript engine is 5x to 100x faster than IE7's at common operations. The IE team is taking a broad look at browser performance, of which Javascript performance is only one component. You can learn more about this topic on our blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/08/26/ie8-performance.aspx and http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2009/01/23/common-issues-in-assessing-browser-performance.aspx

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How long do you plan to drag along the IE7 rendering engine? IE9? IE10?
A: As long as it's needed to view current web content. Ask the other browsers how long they plan to support quirks mode.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: do you have plan to add download manger for IE8? it is not in IE8 RC1 yet!
A: As Dean noted, IE8 RC1 is platform complete. http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2009/01/26/internet-explorer-8-release-candidate-now-available.aspx. We remain interested in this feature for future releases.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there any CSS 2.1 or HTML 4.01 stuf you do not support (intentionally) ?
A: Not that I can think of offhand, no/

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Can users just temporarily hide toolbars (from add-ons)? This was possible from IE5-7, and users could hide and show toolbars using the shortcut menu of any toolbar. In IE8, trying to hide a toolbar will always disable it, as it seems.
A: We've switched to disabling add-ons because we found users hid them but thought they were disabled and thus didn't realize they were taking a performance hit. now we disable the toolbar and give users the option of leaving around the connect BHO if one exists.

Seth [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: That list is full of sites that have absolutely no rendering errors?
A: Yes, as sites are updated to resolve rendering issues, they will be removed from the list. This process can take some time.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Are there any plans to make the current -nomerge command line switch into a full on option in the UI? Our users are having trouble with session confusion because they are forgetting to edit the command line.
A: Yes-- this option is already present in the UI. Click File > New Session.

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Please also tell the folks that manage this software that the URL linking (that breaks after about 30 characters) is really annoying and needs to be fixed.
A: Thanks, Steve. We'll pass the on to the MS communities team.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: +1 vote for an IE8 RC2 - IE8 RC1 still has too many bugs to make real testing/portability possible
A: Thanks for the feedback.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Re: Q#22 - in IE8 (standards mode only) 2 different HTML doctypes (transitional/strict) will render content differently, even when not dealing with deprecated elements (which one would expect a difference) e.g. Bug 411093
A: yes, IE8 supports an "Almost Standards Mode" in a manner similar to other browsers (https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Mozilla's_DOCTYPE_sniffing). HTML5 calls this "almost quirks". differences are particularly around line spacing.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @JohnHrv [Q22] steve_web probably means that Strict DOCTYPEs are treated differently from Transitional ones, even though both trigger standards mode. https://connect.microsoft.com/IE/feedback/ViewFeed back.aspx?FeedbackID=411093
A: yes, IE8 supports an "Almost Standards Mode" in a manner similar to other browsers (https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Mozilla's_DOCTYPE_sniffing). HTML5 calls this "almost quirks". differences are particularly around line spacing.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Eric [72]: How about prevent jscript from hanging up the browser (see [60])?
A: Q60 doesn't really provide the context of what site you're asking about, but IE8 includes some hang-resistance features in the script engine and elsewhere.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Site on the compatibility list have stated that Microsoft has not provided them enough information on what goes wrong with rendering. Only general information on possible differences. That makes finding the issue difficult. Could you provide sites with info?
A: The compatibility list is sourced from the users of the web site.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @EricLaw: [79] Oh wow... didn't know about that one. Will there be a way to have all new instances of IE open as a new session?
A: I'm not aware of such an option, but it's probably not exactly what you'd want anyway. If it was an option, any time a popup or new tab opened, you'd have to log in again.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Gerard Talbot site stil contains about 50 issues half of which might be correct rendering of HTML and CSS 2.1 related. How many do you think you wil fix ?
A: Gerard has been a great resource for us, and we've been working hard on addressing many of the issues he's reported. I don't know the exact count.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @JohnHrv [Q25]: Quick Launch files reside in "C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch". Why are quick launch files stored in an Internet Explorer AppData folder?
A: that's a great question but i don't know the answer. there's probably a good story about that location existing and being easier to use than making something different.

Seth [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Regarding question 49, you misunderstood. Do a "live bookmarks" image search in Live or Google and you will understand what I'm talking about. It is a simpler way to show RSS feeds, which requires only one click to see all, after they are already added.
A: Yes - IE8 offers that functionality. To try it, drag a feed from the favorites center to the favorites bar. Then, when you click in on the item in the favorites bar, you'll see a drop down with all the feed items displayed.

Jon Seitel [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Re: Q#48 - In the Web Slice preview window, content _IS RENDERED_ in Compatibility mode. E.g. content that looks correct in IE8 standards mode looks like a mess in a web slice preview because it _IS_ rendering like IE7. Is it not picking up the DOCTYPE?
A: This is a known bug. In the meantime, I would recommend using an "alternative display source" for the preview window.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @CWilso In what way is "quirks mode" similar to switching rendering engines (aka compatibility mode)?
A: Quirks mode uses the IE7 engine.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Dev tools have problems with IFRAME's (page in the IFRAME only have a doctype). Do you have fixed it for RTM ?
A: this is definitely a known issue and something we're working on for RTM

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: EricLaw, I've been asking for "how to reopen my last brwosing session automatically". Helen says, she diddn't know a way for hacking the registry, to tell IE to do so.
A: I'm not aware of any "secret switch" which would allow you to have browser sessions automatically recovered. Note that frame crashes (which trigger this user experience) are relatively rare in IE8, largely because browser addons run in the tab process.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Although IE8 is 100x faster than IE7, IE8 is still slower in virtually every performance test and real-world test than the majority of its competitors. Will this be addressed before the final?
A: The IE team is taking a broad look at browser performance, of which Javascript performance is only one component. You can learn more about this topic on our blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/08/26/ie8-performance.aspx and http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2009/01/23/common-issues-in-assessing-browser-performance.aspx

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @ JohnHrv [MSFT]: It's sad that users can no longer just temporarily hide toolbars. People with many toolbars used this to show certain toolbars only on demand, when visiting certain sites, for example. Sugg: Add a "just hide now" option in the dialog box
A: I don't really see the benefit of letting people just hide them. i guess now there's an extra click in the dialog, but the functionality is really the same.

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Can Add to Favorites remember the last Create In folder, please?
A: Great feature request. Thanks for the feedback!

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Suggest: add feature in smart screen filter to report illegal websites such as crackers ,hacking learning, spammer and Microsoft will report them to legal department and block them
A: SmartScreen is all about protecting the user from malicious or dangerous sites. If you encounter sites which do not harm visitors but otherwise violate the law, we encourage you to report them to the appropriate authorities.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Are you planning to fix remaining bugs listed on this page: http://www.gtalbot.org/BrowserBugsSection/MSIE8Bugs/ especially bug #39 (Number.to Fixed())?
A: See previous answer.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Any progress on getting IE8 VML performance on par with IE7?
A: thanks to a great test case submitted from the community, we've made some investments here after RC1. thanks!

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will there be a list published of add-ons that cause troubles with IE8 (crashes hang-ups or extreme slowness) ?
A: we have an upgrade advisor that tells people if an add-on they have installed causes problems with IE8 and has a link to find updates if they exist, but i don't know of any published list of all of them.

Jon Seitel [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Does IE8 (its team) take into consideration the features that the other 4 browsers have implemented already?
A: Our most important concern is providing the best possible experience for our users. We take a comprehensive view of the market as part of doing so.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will WM7 contain IE8 derivative ?
A: The Windows Mobile team remains committed to enhancing the browsing platform on their OS. We talk with them regularly.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: EricLaw, I mean: I close IE. So if I reopen IE, IE restore automatically my last browsing session. So is there a way to do this so automatically without going to Tools > restore my last browsing session?
A: Ah, no, I'm not aware of any option to do that. It's a fine feature suggestion though.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: RC1 is making me nervous. Would a "sneak preview" partners build release with all the "investments" alleviate my symptoms? Any possibility?
A: We encourage the community to submit bug reports on issues found in RC1. We continue to address such issues. Thanks!

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Did you try the code in IE8 Standards mode and then click in the right cell?
A: Yes, but since we had to copy and paste it we might not have been doing it as you were. I don't see a difference between IE8 and Firefox.

Seth [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Regarding question 81 answer, I didn't understand how to do that. Could you explain better?
A: Sure - Click the "Favorites" button above the tab row, then click the "Feeds" tab. Next drag, a feed to the favorites bar. Alternatively, you can right click a feed and choose "Add to Favorites Bar"

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Are you looking into the EventTarget interface for events? (document.addEventListener for instance)
A: Not in IE8.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Are there any changes in Protected Mode in IE8 compared to earlier versions? Anything new to consider for add-on developers?
A: Minor updates to Protected Mode were made and are documented here: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/07/02/ie8-security-part-v-comprehensive-protection.aspx. Notably, the Intranet zone now runs at Medium by default. Several new APIs are now available, documented on MSDN.

Jon Seitel [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Re: Q71 - does "in the mean time" mean up until IE8 RTM? or are you indicating that this is a bug that you plan to ship in IE8 RTM (by design)?
A: I don't really know for sure what fixes will or will not end up in the final product. All I can say is that something that might work is using an alternative display source, or the meta versioning tag.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Do you recognize that allowing people to code web pages using IE7 as the standard is negatively affecting web development as a whole?
A: IE7 is not "the standard".

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @JohnHrv (Q58) Thats all very nice, but this is a regression from IE7 (and all other browsers on the market including IE5.5, IE6, IE7, FF2, FF3, Opera 8-9.x, Safari3.x, Chrome, and even Konqueror) - IMHO its a bug that needs to be fixed, not discarded.
A: yes, there definitely are issues here that are bugs

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What incentive do developers have to upgrade/update their pages if they can ask for IE7 compatibility mode for the next 5? 10? years?
A: Interoperability across browsers and devices, for starters.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Hello. I collected several screenshots with IE8's rendering glitches on both Vista and XP: http://tinyurl.com/bm5fda
A: I'm afraid I can't tell what the glitches were. Did you file these in our feedback database?

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @EricLaw [87]: Part 2: I was hoping there was an easier way for users to get this without having them go file-> new session every time they clicked the IE shortcut on their desktop.
A: Well, the simplest mechanism would be to update the desktop shortcut to prevent merging. Of course, it should be understood that there's a performance impact in not merging processes.

Q: @ JohnHrv [MSFT]: To show again hidden (now: disabled) toolbars, users now must go to the Manage Add-Ons dialog box. Showing and hiding toolbars was much faster using just the shortcut menu of other toolbars. Many users made use of this functionality! :-(
A: you can still right-click on the tab band and check the box next to the toolbar. at least that's the behavior i see.

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I'd like the close tab button to overrride any modal boxes the tab's page has thrown up to the viewer. Will this be happening .. or is the ol' CTRL + ALT + DEL the only way to end a webpage that demands a response to the modal dialogue box ?? Thank you.
A: Great suggestion, we'll consider an override for future versions.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: You have to make sure it is running under IE8 Standards mode via Developer Tools
A: I did.

Jane[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there any compatibility issue with IE8 RC1 and Windows Vista SP2 beta?
A: IE8 RC1 should install and run successfully on Vista SP2 beta.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Make sure you remove overflow:auto as the forum points out
A: I did

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Okay, I accept it as "there is now way to do say". However, check this out: https://connect.microsoft.com/IE/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=389081 Can you repro this?
A: This is a known issue - thanks for following up on it!

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: In the past in encrypted website there was an option to install CA but it is not avalable in IE8 , what happened? how to install a certificate in IE8?
A: Windows Vista's Protected Mode prevents installation of certificates within Low Rights processes. In the rare event that you need to install a new root certificate, you can right-click the IE icon and choose "Run as Administrator."

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: About Download manger , when user want to shutdown or restart the PC then there is no way to resume download . and also there is no feature for upload
A: Hi Reza, Internet Explorer does resume downloads if the server supports it and the exact same link is selected to start the download. We do have the request for a download manager in our queue for consideration in an IE release.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: About content Advisor and removing password. If user have a password then why he or she could not remove it? for example I have password and I want to remove it
A: Content Advisor, introduced in IE5, is used as a lightweight form of parental controls. The idea is that the parent enables the controls in the child's user-account, then sets a password to prevent the child from disabling the controls. Hence, allowing the child to remove the password would defeat the point of the feature.

Seth [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: [90]Publishing a list of buggy and slow add-ons could put pressure on de add-on provider te release a newer version before IE final instead of months later.
A: We do collaborate extensively with top add-on publishers to ensure problems are fixed as soon as possible

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @EricLaw [99]: I understand that... part of the problem is asking several thousand users to do this, and do it right becomes intractable. I suppose the real question I'm asking is, is there any other way to start an IE instance that is unmerged?
A: Generally, we'd expect that in organizations with thousands of desktops, they have the ability to control what icons appear on the user's desktop.

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Page and Tool menus contain several same items ? Why ?
A: The only items that are the same are Compat-related. What else are you seeing that's the same?

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: About the 'close button under modal dialogs' problem, I think IE should adopt a 'Very Low Coupled Tab' system, as I explained in my blog. The object is not only to avoid 'modal problems', but also lot of things like liking of the UI with the MainFrame.
A: That's a fine suggestion, thanks!

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: It seems more harmful for IE to inch its standards support forward little by little leaving a wake of partial standards to drag along to the next version. Wouldn't a few giant leaps make the transitions smoother for all involved?
A: IE8 has made a giant leap in standards with full CSS 2.1 support.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When we can submit our future suggestion for IE?
A: blogs.msdn.com/ie is a popular place; Channel9 is another.

Seth [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: So, the first thing I want to speak about is some documents I wrote about ideas for IE9. You can read them (in English at this location : http://blogs.codes-sources.com/fremycompany/). They are several technical data that can have interest for you.
A: Thanks! We're always excited to read ideas from users for future releases :)

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @CWilso [114] you are allowing site developers to decide what the standard is. You are allowing developers to opt-out of standards (IE8 mode) and keep old code around for longer. This seems damaging to the web as a whole. Sometimes things need to break
A: Yes, we are letting site developers to decide how they want to write their code, and we are choosing to offer our users the best experience possible while encouraging web site developers to migrate to standards (e.g. by only offering new features under IE8 standards mode). We don't consider it to be our role to be punitive to site authors.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will upgrade advisor contain option to disable all buggy or extremely slow add-ons ?
A: if something causes enough problems to be included in the upgrade advisor's list, we'll automatically disable it. however, we have a high bar for doing this because the extension developers are our partners and we need to balance their needs with end users so we try and work with them to improve stability and performance.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @EricLaw [87]: Good point. I work on a web app that allows users to log in and run multiple sessions in parallel. We use session cookies to keep track of their session key. With the cookies being merged, the sessions get confused. -nomerge fixes this.
A: Yes, this is a common use-case, for which the -nomerge option was added. I expect that we'll be publishing a blog post on this topic at http://blogs.msdn.com/ie shortly. Thanks!

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @EricLaw [129]: These aren't users within our company, they are customers using our application. Sorry if I wasn't clear before. I really do appreciate all of the info you're giving me. I'm just trying to make the IE8 migration better for them.
A: Thanks for the clarification.

Seth [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: In case this got lost in the question shuffle, is the compatibility list able to support sub-domains in the future? (ie everything on google.com renders perfect except for a pages like books.google.com... it would be great to just have the sub-domain)
A: That's a great idea - thanks for the feedback!

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: about downlaod, what if we shut down the PC? whatwill happen to download?
A: The download will resume if the same link is selected. However, this can be problematic since many sites won't let a user get back to the same URL.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: when Microsoft eliminate IE6 for users and they must install IE7 or IE8?
A: Microsoft has life cycle policies for how long we'll support a given OS/product and IE6 support will follow those policies. we want people to be able to depend on having reasonable support for a product if they depend on it for some reason or just choose to run it

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Many dialog boxes look XPish under Vista and 7 (download confirmations, for example). Why don't you generally use the new friendler TaskDialogs under Vista/7? Petition: More Segoe UI, less Tahoma! Of course, the XP build should continue to use the old ones
A: We prioritize investments based on user needs. We've migrated a number of dialogs to task dialogs; because of the range of platforms we ship on, in some cases the investment required to make updates means we don't have a chance to get to them.

Allison [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: It has been mentioned many times before that the Connect system is <polite>not a very good</polite> system for tracking bugs in IE, are there plans in the future to get a better, dedicated system in place to deal with bug submission/tracking for IE?
A: We can't really discuss a roadmap for feedback right now.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @EricLaw [144]: My pleasure. I look forward to your blog post, and really hope that it helps me out with my customers.
A: me too. thanks! :-)

Seth [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Instead of the entire google.com domain
A: Thanks for the feedback on the compat view feature

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @CWilso [130] [114] it is not a case for punishment. It is that you (ie team) made your beds hard by neglecting standards for so long. Now some eggs must be broken to rectify the situation. If people can choose to be lazy, they probably will
A: Then they will be paying the price by maintaining IE7 version and a standards version for all other browsers.

Tony [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: In case this got lost in the question shuffle, is the compatibility list able to support sub-domains in the future? (ie everything on google.com renders perfect except for a pages like books.google.com... it would be great to just have the sub-domain)
A: Currently it's not supported, but it's a great idea and we appreciate the feedback. In the meantime, web authors can easily control the mode for their own sub-domains by using the compatibility headers or meta tags.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Feature suggestion: "Silent Mode" option under Page menu, e.g. show no script dialogs (alert(), confirm(), etc.)), suppress script errors and such. As far as I know, there is a working implementation (Silent property of shdocvw control).
A: It's an interesting idea, but what would you expect to happen in the case of a modal dialog? Can you elaborate on what you'd use such a mode for?

Allison [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will the bugs database on Connect be removed from public view after IE8 goes live, as happened with IE7? Or will it remain publicly available?
A: We can't really discuss a roadmap for feedback right now.

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: what about a feature to drag a tab from one window to another windows?
A: Yes, the request to drag tabs between windows is also in our customer wishlist for future IE versions. Thanks for the additional vote :)

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will IE 8 cache works like Firefox does. For example, won't it lose the text we type in forum engines when the registration cookie expires?
A: I'm not sure I understand the scenario exactly?

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why is full screen not on Page menu ? Why are accelerators not on tools menu ?
A: The accelerators are in the page menu because they pertain to that specific page (email that page to someone, blog about that specific page). The full screen option is not specific to one page.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: about content advisor , if the child don't have password then he or she could not remove it, then i think parent need UI t remove it because he has password.
A: If you have the password, then you can enter the password, then disable the password.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Do you expect to get a cake from the Firefox team when IE8 RTMs?
A: Yes we do. Chocolate please.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What's the lowest version of windows that IE8 supports? I know some people are still trapped on windows 98 and 2000.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What's the lowest version of windows that IE8 supports? I know some people are still trapped on windows 98 and 2000.
A: As with IE7, IE8 supports Windows XP and above. Windows 98 is no longer in support, does not get security updates, and is not safe for internet browsing. Windows 2000 is no longer in regular support and hence new components will not be shipped for it.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Do you have any feature to protect user against keylogger in IE?
A: IE8's SmartScreen Filter will help prevent installation of malware, including keyloggers.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @EricLaw [every response to me so far]: My boss says to send you some flowers for all the attention. How about that chocolate cake Chris Wilson asked for, instead?
A: happy to help. :-)

Matt H [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there any reason IE doesn't support having multiple versions installed on a single computer?
A: Internet Explorer provides many shared components for Windows, many of which are used by other applications or serve to help developers build applications on our foundations. Having multiple versions of these pieces could lead to instability and inconsistent experiences. To aid developers in testing their websites and applications, we provide Application Compatibility Virtual Hard Disk images at no cost, each of which includes a time limited version of Windows along with a specific version of Internet Explorer. The VHDs can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=7C2B5317-A40F-4E86-8835-D37170C5923E&displaylang=en

Seth [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: RE: [55] @Seth : I hope you'll find it great. I tried to be clear in my prose, but I'm not perfect English speaker, so it can contains mistakes. VLCT is a great feature I imagined. Compiled CSS too. I think you'll find it interesting.
A: Thank you - this looks very detailed. We will definitely take your points into consideration :)

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Thanks for a great browser! I was wondering if IE8 Filtering is supposed to block all advertising on my site (all 3rd party content). Surely there must be a way to have advertising and be compatible with IE8?
A: No, IE8's InPrivate Filtering is not meant to block advertising; it's meant to help users to prevent tracking by unrelated 3rd-party websites. Users are in control of the feature, and it's worth noting that InPrivate Filtering is not enabled in non-private IE by default.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When user disable Smartscreen filter then there is no warning appear , I think IE need to give warning when smart screen is off to the user
A: Various products (e.g. OneCare, Forefront) will show that the browser configuration is in an insecure state when SmartScreen is disabled.

Seth [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Sure thing Seth... happy to provide suggestions! But is the list itself capable of added features? Currently, even if I manually enter books.google.com in compatibility view, it just gives me the core google.com domain back as a result
A: Yes, that is correct. In RC1, the compatibility doesn't support sub-domains. The web site author could choose to place one of their sub-domains in compat mode by changing their code.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why has Internet Explorer 8 taken so long to beta test, it’s been a year now, so why has it taken so long, and will the compatibility mode be taken off in the final version or will it be there in the final version?(would like a expert to answer it.. please)
A: Testing and feedback is important to us. And yes, the compatibility list feature will be there in the final release.

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Check this out: https://connect.microsoft.com/IE/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=406439 Is this fixed in your current builds?
A: Hi Stefan,

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Has IE8 any improvement for add-on developers ?
A: our primary improvements for add-on developers has been the two new types of add-ons: web slices and accelerators.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Many add-on developers avoid IE because of the COM complexity involved. Why don't you create official .NET wrapper classes that would shield developers from all the COM stuff? Destroy the perception that creating IE add-ons is extremely complicated!
A: It's a fine suggestion. There are some good reasons why this isn't formally supported-- particularly the performance implications of loading the framework on boot, and the fact that only one version of the CLR can be hosted in any given process. It's definitely an area of interest for future work. thanks!

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Would you care to explain why there's been reluctance to release an RC2? It would allow more time to re-open and fix regression bugs, and other bugs, like those listed at http://www.gtalbot.org/BrowserBugsSection/MSIE8Bugs/.
A: We're always interested in feedback from the community. We're making great progress in addressing feedback from RC1. Thanks!

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: [128]I mean those compatibility items. Why are they doubled in two menus ?
A: Users could consider these options as both pertaining to the specific page (i.e. you could be on a site and want to always display that specific site in compat view) and to browsing in general (wanting to set compat settings for all sites).

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there a documented number of compatibility-mode requests that cause a site to be blacklisted on the compatibility-mode list?
A: The term "blacklist" is inaccurate. As noted in Scott's blogpost, it's really up to the site owner as to whether or not the site is in the Compatibility View list. We notify site owners that their users are requesting their site be rendered in CompatView, and they may opt-out.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is IE 8 compatibility list cable of expanding features? I would love to be able to use sub-domain names. Example- almost everything on Google.com works perfect, except http://books.google.com; it would be great if you could simply add sub-domains of sites
A: As per the blog posts on this topic (e.g. http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2009/02/16/just-the-facts-recap-of-compatibility-view.aspx), this feature is top level domain only.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: After all is said and done, I would just like to congratulate you all at the IE 8 team. You have listened to us more than any non-Windows based beta I’ve ever participated in and squashed every major IE bug in 6/7. Great job... you should feel great!!
A: Thanks Jason!

Seth [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: And make the rest of the site use standards mode. If I try now and add books.google.com, it will only let me add the main google.com domain, can this change/be updated to work like this in the future?
A: We appreciate the feedback and will take this into consideration.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Adblock plus extension + Element Hiding helper extension + EaslyList subscription, leave me out of near all ads of the internet for free, automatically updated and without compromising performance, in Firefox. Please read more about them. What to do in IE?
A: If you put hosts of unwanted content in your restricted sites zone, you'll find that the amount of unwanted content you see will decline significantly. IE8's new InPrivate Filtering feature can also be useful in this task.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: So support for XP will be discontinued in 2010, that means this is the last version of IE for XP because i doubt IE10 is coming next year. correct?
A: It's a theory.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Compare how you market IE new features to how Safari 4 public beta (released today) market. You should really talk more about all the new features in the download page, don't you? People won’t search every post in IE blog.
A: We do collect this information together, but most of our users don't want to have to read through the list of features to install.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there a way to enable InPrivate Filtering permanently?
A: No, but you can turn it on at any time with the CTRL+SHIFT+F hotkey.

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
A: oops... hit enter by mistake... anyway, the IE team investigated this issue. Ad block pro is placing itself in the IE status bar and this is unsupported. Any method a third party devises to access the status bar is done at their own risk.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Can you verify that you are running in IE8 Standards mode as this is required to reproduce the issue
A: yes

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Check this out: https://connect.microsoft.com/IE/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=406439 Is this fixed in your current builds?
A: Hi Stefan, I answered this with the original question.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Re: 160: InPrivate Filtering seems to block all third party content (ie. ads), not just tracking of it. I managed to block even a statically linked 3rd party JavaScript source. How would you then suggest to make it work with advertising partners?
A: Unless you block the download of content, there's no way to prevent server-side aggregation of information.

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Kristen, hi... I think you pressed enter too early ;)
A: yes, you're exactly right :)

Matt H [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will we get an update to IE 8 for Windows 7 when IE goes to RTM?
A: IE8 is part of Windows 7 and Internet Explorer updates are released along with Windows 7 releases.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: any response on the true fixed status of the onresize event in IE8 (internal builds)?... it is still busted in IE8 RC1
A: Thanks for the test cases; they've been very helpful.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: And you can’t reproduce the issue, I have confirmed this issue with many other people and computers
A: Have you typed it every time, or do you have a URL to a repro case? Perhaps we're pasting it wrong.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I have not received a response to my inquiry, was the code run in IE8 ST mode
A: yes, we tested it in IE8 standards mode.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why does IE 8 use more RAM versus IE 7 when multiple tabs are opened?
A: IE8 includes a process-isolation model which increases robustness. The garbage collector in IE8 is more aggressive, however, so IE8 users should often find that IE8 uses less memory overall in AJAX intensive sites.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: just copy and paste the first code sample and then remove the overflow:autol from the code and run it in IE8 ST mode.
A: yes, I did, and so did John; both of us made sure it was in IE8 standards mode; neither of us saw the issue you described.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: so internally, is onresize fixed for windows/iframes? This is pretty critical.
A: We recognize that having predictable OnResize behavior is necessary for compatibility with existing and new sites.

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Kristen, afaik this diddn't happened in IE8 Partner Build..
A: Are you saying this issue is fixed in the partner build?

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: IE8's toolbar rendered with glitches on Vist
A: http://cid-cefa8a7d555d9f1e.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/IE8%20Screenshots/ie8buttons.jpg
A: Interesting; I've never seen this issue.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: The url is http://www.webdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=202182
A: A URL to the active repro case, not a textual description of the problem. We followed those steps, and we must not be replicating your scenario precisely.

Chris Wilson [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Are you using IE8 RC1
A: yes.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How many people use IE7 approximately now ?
A: IE7 is the world's most popular browser. I'm afraid I don't know the exact number, but it's very, very big. :-)

Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Kristen, yes. This issue didn't happen in IE8's PB. This bug is new to RC1.
A: Well, we've made a lot of progress since from Beta 1 to RC. Regardless, when a 3rd party adds themselves to the IE status bar they do this at their own risk.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will automatic updates start immediately after final release ?
A: We'll have more news on this front when IE8 is released.

EricLaw [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How about a entry to the add-on website on the help menu ?
A: There's a link in Manage Add-ons. Thanks for the suggestion.

Seth [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: IE8 beta 2 (Vista) offered many address bar suggestion items. in RC1, I rarely get a suggestion. is this a known issue? my windows search index is huge (200.000 elements indexed). does this matter?
A: We changed the behavior in RC1. The first item in the list is always the suggested item

Allison [MSFT] (Expert):
Thanks everyone! Great questions!

Matt H [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will automatic updates start immediately after final release ?
A: We have not made any announcements regarding distribution plans for Internet Explorer 8 at this time. We will communicate any plans in advance to ensure users, web site owners and enterprise customers are prepared.
