Daniel (Moderator):
Thanks for joining us today for our Internet Explorer 8 chat. Let's get started! At this time I'd like to have our Internet Explorer Experts introduce themselves....

Introductions:

Allison [MSFT] (Expert):
Hey Everyone! I’m Allison and I work on the Technical Beta Program.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Hi, my name is John Hrvatin and I'm a program manager working primarily on developer tools.:)

Tony [MSFT] (Expert):
Hi! I'm Tony Ross and I work primarily on compatibility.

Start of chat:

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is IE8 distribution thru Windows Update already started and if so where and approximately how many have been updated ?
A: we've already started offering IE8 RTM to users of pre-release versions of IE8. our plan for offering IE8 to other users is outlined in this post: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2009/04/10/prepare-for-automatic-update-distribution-of-ie8.aspx. we don't have numbers to share about install rates.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Since web slices are tied to a URL/Element ID, why does IE allow me to add the same slice twice, 3, 4 times...
A: You may want to put the same slice in multiple folders.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: During the beta, I reported a problem of misplacement of Unicode combining diacritics. It looks like it was fixed in IE8 RTW on Vista, but not in the XP version. Is there a chance that it could be fixed before IE9, or is development for XP frozen?
A: This is just a guess because I'm not familiar with the exact issue, but if the issue was only resolved on IE8 on Vista, it's likely the root cause was within Windows and was only fixed in Vista so any future fix on XP would depend on that Windows bug being resolved in XP which would happen in an update and/or service packs if the issue was deemed critical enough.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: The JavaScript error dialog *STILL* has no clear option to clear warnings/errors in IE8 - When can we expect this to be fixed/resolved. It makes debugging AJAX issues in IE a PITA.
A: this is something we'll consider for a future IE release rather than a bug fix in an update.

Sharon [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: If I go to IE tema blog I type http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/but URL suggestions always puts http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/default.aspx first. I prefer that the url I chose is listed before some substituted one. Could you fix this ?
A: Both of those urls go to the same page blogs.msdn.com/ie will take you to blogs.msdn.com/ie/default.aspx. You can remove an item from your autocomplete list by arrowing down to it and clicking delete.

Allison [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: IE Connect bugs 434706 + (431489) have cropped up showing that IE has problems printing checkboxes and radio buttons in Standards mode. Any ETA on a patch for IE8?
A: Hi Steve, thank you for the bug report. The IE Team is investigating this issue.

Sharon [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: If I go to IE tema blog I type http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/ but URL suggestions always puts http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/default.aspx first. I prefer that the url I chose is listed before some substituted one. Could you fix this ?
A: Also, wanted to ask, why do you prefer the first url over the second one?

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: @Chris Wilson Re:Q18 - AGREED!!! so why can't I add the same bookmark twice in IE!
A: Good feature request. :)

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: About Windows Update in Windows XP. When you log to update website and ask to update and you click to install that a download and install will come up and you could not browse that Windows until you finish installation of update. Do you have any solution f
A: i haven't tried this myself (haven't run XP in a while), but I believe this is a result of the ActiveX control Windows Update uses on their site. i'm not sure what a workaround would be.

Tony [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I have been having some issues with images rendering incorrectly and very slow DHTML. please check http://97.74.64.20/ for a sample site
A: I've visited the sample site and viewed the provided screenshots, but I'm not seeing the same issues. Is there a different subpage I need to view or particular steps that need to be followed to reproduce the issue?

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Hi. I've got two requests for IE8, or some later version. The first one is really, really, really important to me, and I really don't understand why it was killed starting with IE7, and that is the side search bar.
A: What did you like about the side search bar? What was your second question?

Sharon [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: About Content advisor I think you should put feature for user to remove Password whenever they login with password then could remove it, what do you think?
A: Sorry I don't quite understand your suggestion. Can you clarify what would happen after the user logs in?

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will Internet Explorer 8 be deployable via ITMU or WSUS?
A: IE8 will be available through WSUS. More info is at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/updatemanagement/dd365125.aspx. there's also an IT deployment guide at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc985339.aspx.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I often get popup questions on forums when I try entering an URL trough a link button. How can I set this on allowed permanently for those sites ?
A: click tools->Pop-up block->pop-up blocker settings, and enter the domains of any sites you want to always be able to open pop-ups

Sharon [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How can get more involve in Internet Explorer team and communicate with them directly? not only from connect website?
A: This chat is a good start... Anything specific you are looking for?

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Well, the benefits of the side search bar are obviously still recognized for history and favorites, and they are the same. It gives you a list of results down the side, and you can then go through them one at a time, all while keeping the list handy.
A: Apologies, I must be missing your request. What kind of functionality would you like to see in the side search bar then? We do allow search of history. In addition, if you type a word into the address bar, you can see many items (from typed URLs, history, favorites, etc.) and will have the entire list handy.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Will IE8's remaining CSS 2.1 issues be fixed in the near future and if you when might that update take place ?
A: What remaining CSS2.1 issues, hAl? We do of course want to keep on top of CSS2.1 quality.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will IE8 be updated to accommodate performance problems with the restricted sites list and if so when will that update take place ?
A: that's an issue we're aware of and we're investigating what the issue is and if/when/what release a fix would be made available.

Frank [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: (2) Does someone in the Microsoft Team tried Safari 4 and Chrome ? Both have got good things in their UI that Microsoft can inspire from. I don't say these browsers have the perfect solution in UI, but they have done some very good job in this point.
A: Yep, we’ve seen them : ) Our primary focus is on constantly doing *user* research to ensure that our users have a great experience in IE8, Win7 and IE9. Just like other browsers, we will continue to focus on speed and an optimized user interface.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Are you going to be adding support for HTML5 elements, like Canvas?
A: We added support for some HTML5 features in IE8, like postMessage and .hash. I expect we will continue to add more in future versions of IE./

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I'd like to confirm my earlier question of "Will Internet Explorer 8 be deployable via ITMU and WSUS?" You said it would be available through WSUS. I am correct in stating it will not be available via ITMU?
A: what is ITMU?

Frank [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What steps are being taken on speed [startup and rendering]? How will performance compare to 7?
A: We're doing a couple of things in this area. End-users can see their add-on perf in tools-manage addons, load time column (You can see how long each add-on takes to load when you open a new window or tab) We're also working side-by-side with add-on developers to ensure that their add-ons are fast and stable. Overall, IE8 is much faster than IE7.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Has the IE Team resolved the issue with IE loading slowly due to large datasets entered into the Restricted zones list (e.g. SpyBot protection)... we don't want to turn Spybot off, but the performance hit is beyond reasonable levels.
A: that's an issue we're aware of and we're investigating what the issue is and if/when/what release a fix would be made available.

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: The lack of favicons in the IE8 address bar is a real concern and a backwards step in terms of usability. Has the IE Team had a change of heart yet on supporting this much desired, much missed feature.
A: This is the first time I've heard this request. Many people have indicated that they really like the new address bar - they say it appears less cluttered and highlights the important information for them. Often times, many of the favicons would be the same (i.e. live search, live maps or nytimes article 1, nytimes article 2). However, if you think that the additional icon would help you identify more quickly the item for which you are looking, then I appreciate this feedback, and will pass it along to the appropriate PM.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Hmmm, JohnHrv, you know well enough what the issue is wit hthe restricted list. It was already explaining by EricLaw on the blog
A: understanding what the issue is and identifying a safe fix and the proper release for that fix are two separate things. i should have been more clear that while we understand the issue, we're not in a position to provide more details about if or when a fix would be available.

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: The old side search bar allowed the search to be entered in a pane on the left, and the results all came up in that same pane. Then you could click on each result, the list of results would stay there in that pane, and you could go to each result in the m
A: I see. That is a great request. I can see how that might be a more difficult problem today. Thanks for this suggestion!

Frank [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will the automatic Windows update proces warn users if they have poor performing addons of possible conflicting (anti malware) software versions ?
A: Not during WU download, but after: IE8 does a number of compat checks when it starts up (to find older incompatible add-ons), and helps you update add-ons if needed. Also, if IE crashes on Vista - I really recommend that you do the 'send feedback to microsoft' button, and allow the crash reporter to check for a solution - I'm adding solution information to every solvable IE crash instance that I can find that will help you fix the issue.

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: This keeps it all right there in front of you, your "shopping list" so to speak, and then you can go through each result, as you visit, the color on of the link on the results list changes, so you know where you've been, and it's all clean and in one place
A: Makes sense. One small alternative solution is to open the search results and then middle click (or ctrl+click) all the links that look interesting. They will be grouped together, and the first tab will always be the list of results..

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: ITMU is Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates - used with SMS.
A: i'm not familiar with that. we try to support all "typical" microsoft deployment technologies, but I don't remember hearing about that one specifically. i can try to find out.

Frank [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why do several addon's show no load times even if they are used ?
A: Some add-ons don't load any code during startup (some are just registry entries) and some opt out of loading (return access_denied, etc error codes) - so that is why you see a 0.00 load time.

Allison [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Yes, about question 10, I want to share my idea direct with IE team and have live meeting section that we can voice out not only type, type
A: In the next couple of months, on the Microsoft Connect site, we will introduce a new type of feedback form designed specifically to handle improvements for the next version of Internet Explorer.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: IE9/Next - native SVG... Yes or No.
A: We've certainly heard the demand for SVG. As a matter of policy, we don't commit to implementing features until we have implemented them.

Frank [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: (3) Do you plan creating a new system of add-on that load in the master instance of ie and not for each tab ?
A: We're looking into improving the add-on infrastructure for IE9 - but keep in mind that add-ons will always want to do some processing during initial page load. :)

Sharon [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: About content advisor, When you enable it then it will ask for password and hint. If you put password and hint. Then you could not remove password and only could change it. I request a feature to remove content advisor password.
A: Got it. Thanks! Interesting idea. Content advisor can only be enabled if you have set a password so I think that's why you are not able to remove the password. Thanks for the suggestion.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: @Chris Wilson Re:Q22 - I'll take full, proper :hover support on Select elements for $500.
A: Do you have a test case pointer?

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @Helen - Re:Q49 - then let me be the first. I HATE the new IE address bar - with a passion.
A: Is there anything else besides adding favicons that would make the address bar more appealing to you?

Tony [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I have noticed the issue several times, It always occurs if F5 is hit over and over. It can appear the first time also
A: I'm still unable to repro, but this sounds like it may be network related. If you could acquire a capture of the issues when it occurs (see http://www.fiddlercap.com/FiddlerCap/) we may be able to help.

Frank [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Speaking of communication - has the MS Office team been asked internally to drop or fix the MS Research toolbar that clutters, & slows down IE... and is not removable from within IE
A: You can remove the toolbar in Office Setup - it is in the last section of the installer (I can't remember what the section is called....but I do it every time I install a new build of Windows 7) We've worked with the Office developers on the toolbar, and it should not slow down the user on load (although we are still hearing reports from users about this issue - we are investigating)

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What is the best way of debugging javascript in IE8?
A: ie8 has a built-in javascript debugger. press F12 to open the developer tools, switch to the 'Script' tab, and press 'start debugging'.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: The MS Office research addon has been a known culprit in slowing IE8. Will the Office team update it and if so has the IEteam been informed when this will take place ?
A: The Office team knows about the issue; I'm not sure where they are on action.

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I go along by the links changing colors.
A: The links in the original tab would still be changing colors. That said, I do understand the suggestion and I appreciate this feedback.

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: As for my second question, I actually already posted it, it was the one about changing the "organize favorites" or even the direct manipulation of favorite from the list to allow the user to select more than a single one at a time to move/delete, etc.
A: That is a great feature request. It is already on my list of things to consider for future versions. Thanks!

Allison [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: About the new feedback form: when it is out, do you want the old suggestions (from the Connect beta) re-filed, or only new ones?
A: New ones is preferred. :)

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: This can only be accomplished by accessing favorites through Windows Explorer now, and it would be able to simply do it directly through the IE interface.
A: True.

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: My other request would be to change the way that Favorites are managed so that multiple favorites can be selected and moved/deleted at once (from within IE, not using file Explorer). The organize favorites feature only allows one at a time.
A: Answered above in the thread.

Sharon [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: about live search, for example if you search weather in Live search in IE8 show picture of area. My suggest is to add time as well. That when I search time redmond then show corrent time in redmond in live search in IE
A: thanks for the suggestion. We'll pass it on to the Live Search team.

Harel Williams[MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: (1) Hello! As usually, I've made a doc about the remarks I collected since last chat. It's longer than last time. http://cid-201f3835d49587fe.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/Images%20blog/[23%20april%202009]%20IE9%20Conception%20-%20Some%20ideas.xps.
A: Thanks for collecting these thoughts! We'll be happy to share them with the rest of the team.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I have a question about the address bar at the top of the window. I have IE8. The address bar for this page is http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/chats/chatroom.aspx?origQuery=q_ampregsys=true well ONLY the microsoft.com is in black.
A: ie8 purposely leaves only the top-level domain in black to make it easy for users to understand the site they're on. many malicious sites create huge URLs that try to make people think they're on microsoft.com or paypal.com.

Frank [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: With the migration to IE8, do you think we are most likely to see IE7 users upgrading, but IE6 users staying where they are?
A: Predictions are hard :) wrt IE6, we are working with large corporations to move them from IE6 to something newer.

Sharon [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: About typo errors, you aware of that, for example you type goggle.com instead google.com or micsoft.com instead microsoft.com. I think for improve user experience you need to add function to warn user about type errors
A: Thanks for the suggestion. It's very difficult for us to guess the intentions of the user which is why we always try to navigate to the site the user has requested and then do a search if the url doesn't resolve.

Harel Williams[MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Several programs like Sophos client firewall, HP smart web printing, SQL server management studio, Hotspot Shield and the remote connection program that comes with HP pavilion computers seem unable to word properly with IE8. Are you aware of these issues ?
A: Hey Hal, we'll check our bug database but it would help quite a bit if you added bugs to connect (I assume you have access).

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: @Chris Wilson Re:Q57 - seriously? are we going to play this game? Select Element CSS support has always been bad. bug 416378 in connect.
A: Thanks for the reference. I'm not off-the-cuff familiar with every bug that's been reported, so that was helpful. Not attempting to play a game.

Tony [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Which Version of MSXML is used by default in Internet Explorer 8 RC1?
A: MSXML 3 is still the default.

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @Helen Re:Q63 - yes, favicons would be #1, #2 is matching on text typed, that appears in the URL after the hostname (including port, path, params, values). #3, I installed the Search tool to get fancier IE address bar, but that Search feature is MUCH...
A: Great requests. I'll pass them along to the feature owner. Will respond to your third request in your next question.

Allison [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: 7. Harel several users (beta testes) have complained about not having access to post at connect. u c my mail?
A: If someone wants to have access to the Technical Beta program on Microsoft Connect, then send a mail to IESO@microsoft.com.

Sharon [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @Sharon About Q17 I used the IE blog example because it was at hand. I want to go to the page I recognize because I typed it and not the url substituted by the site. Seve sites use complex URL's with ID's of which I do not know which page is the one I need
A: do you have address bar autocomplete enabled? That section should show up before your history section and it will only display items that you have actually typed in the address bar.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I'm going to test some intranets with IE 8, and i have noticed, that the Compatibility View button, some web sites show the button and others don't... can i configure this setting inside Internet Explorer 8 Tools->Options command?
A: the compatibility view button appears on all sites unless the site owner or some setting has already chosen whether or not that site should run in compat view. for example, if the developer adds the meta tag or HTTP header to indicate the desired rendering mode, ie8 doesn't show the button. and if in 'Compatibility View Settings' IE8's configured to load all intranet sites in compat view, then we won't show the button on any intranet sites.

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: (Re:Q63)...than the default windows search... so much so that I had to uninstall it (google it, I'm far from alone)
A: I'm not quite sure which search tool you are using (if not the default windows search). I don't know of any search tool that improves the IE address bar experience. Which search tool did you install? Are you still speaking about the address bar or the search box?

Frank [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @Frank Re:Q28 - But that new infrastucture... will be smart enough NOT to load on about:blank, about:tabs, about:inprivate, etc. correct? (e.g. it won't be the slow mess that is in IE8 right now)
A: We'll look into that - we do want new tab to be as quick as possible. (I use tools-manage add-ons to trim down my add-ons list to the bare essentials)

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: about question 72, is it normal for parts of the URL to be light grey, its like this on every page I go to, I am worried that I have a virus or worm or something. So I guess I just need to hear that it is normal and safe.
A: yes, that's normal. the goal is to help you identify the true domain of the site you're on.

Sharon [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: About content advisor, user might to remove password later on to disable it but cannot remove it, please consider it.
A: thanks

Harel Williams[MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Will the automatic Windows update proces allow for an "regsvr32 actxprxy.dll" like action during setup so that this performance fix would not be required ?
A: Hey Hal, we are investigating exactly why regsvr32 does improve performance in certain scenarios (it seems to improve slow downs primarily due to installing Java JRE). We are always trying to address general performance issues in the product. Interesting idea though!

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: (5) IE has tons of useful options. But they're hidden to the 'normal' user. I think it would be great if you make the 'First use' wizard of IE a bit longer to propose some other customizations/options that IE haves but that a lot of peaple ignores.
A: This is our first request ever to make it longer! Thanks for this feedback - we do have a lot of great customization/options that are at least one level deep, and thus require a bit of searching.

Allison [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: 93. They are already registered with connect. They cannot submit tickets. They only have an option to quit their participation.
A: Ok. It sounds like they are not members of the technical beta program. They need a invitation to join. Either way, have them email IESO@microsoft.com and we will try to figure out the issue.

Frank [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: For add-on some of them might have compatibility problem and they are known. My suggest is to disable them and then update then and re-enable them instead to say about compatibility problem and user solve it manually
A: We worked with add-on developers to make sure that they have IE8 compatible versions of their add-ons on their websites (and in their auto-updaters) - and we are working to improve this situation for future releases

Sharon [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Hotmail and gmail had a webslide in ieaddon website , why they removed?
A: Sorry I'm not sure what happened although I'm not sure that there ever was a gmail webslice. There are accelerators for both these services available on ieaddons.com

Sharon [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: can someone give me a link to go to for help on why my pictures won't open anymore, all i can see is a thumbnail?
A: where are you trying to access your photos from?

Tony [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Hi all - I'm having some ugly rendering problems with Office Communicator Links in SharePoint sites - when shown in IE8, the hover link is displaced (I have a demo video at screencast.com - but copy/paste doesn't seem to work here)
A: We are aware of this problem and the SharePoint team is looking into it.

Sharon [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: about typo error: You could add a beta that user could report that this is not my website and I want to visit this website. by user report you could do that . Such what you did in Anti-phishing
A: thanks for the suggestion

Allison [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @Alison [93] : Even if we send a mail to IESO, we mostly don't receive any response. The newsgroup is fine, but the maintainers don't have time to handle all the bugs that get posted, so the bugs never reach connect site...
A: Who sent the email?

Harel Williams[MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Got this today in IE8 RTM loading a basic, local HTML file w/basic JSWhy does IE think it contains Chinese characters? http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/4310/loadinglocalhtmlfile.png
A: Hey Steve, might help if you provide us with the source. I haven't seen that before.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why internet explorer 8 is slow when compared to IE 7?
A: do you have a particular scenario in mind? ie8 is significantly faster than ie7 in everything we've tested. some performance problems can come from add-ons that are installed.

JohnHrv [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Any more specific date than (3rd week of April) for Automatic Updates delivery of IE8?
A: no, not at this time. but even when it does start, the roll-out is throttled so it won't be everyone getting it at once.

Harel Williams[MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Is IE 8.0 RC1 is the final release?
A: HEy Venu. IE8 Final release came out mid-March. You can get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx

Frank [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: You know that in most of IE crash scenario is cause by toolbar and third-party software. I recommend to design a digest that if toolbar is case crash then disable it and report to Microsoft
A: That is a good suggestion...We do some of that already. When IE crashes, please send the crash report to Microsoft, and I'll see it and will be able to work on the issue. (Well, I'll see the total counts of which add-ons crashed, and we try to address all major crashes) please use the 'check for solutions' feature in vista - we're adding a lot of info in there to help you fix your crashes. As for disabling software automatically: That is problematic, as Add-on A (from company A) can cause Add-on B (from Company B) to crash...our approach is to help add-on developers get stable add-ons out there ASAP, and to help users fix the issue themselves

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Re Q90 - yes, there is some "Windows Search" tool that even appears in the address bar itself as an installable option. http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/09/09/the-ie8-smart-address-bar-part-1-navigate-easier-and-faster.aspx
A: Ah I see. You must be running XP. Vista/Win7 Beta should come with Windows Search.

Allison [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Re: [10] Wouldn't be nice to have an 'IE Taskforce' website to gather information of what IE's user thinks of IE's implemented or requested features ? See http://www.windows7taskforce.com/ for example. I know that the Win Team look sometimes at this site.
A: In the next couple of months, we will introduce a new type of feedback form on Microsoft Connect designed specifically to handle improvements for the next version of Internet Explorer. For more information, check out this blog post:<http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2009/03/23/re-ie8-beta-feedback.aspx>

Harel Williams[MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: @Harel Williams, Re: Q15 - I'll file a ticket in connect.
A: Thanks Steve!

Helen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Re: [96] @Hellen : Yes, I don't say it must be longer (I know it's pretty annoying to have to modify your options before you go on the web the first time) but you should at least propose more options, even if's not obligatory.
A: Yes. The first run is good visibility for some of our less-discoverable options. Thanks for this suggestion!

Harel Williams[MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: When updating an XP SP2 machine from IE 6 to IE 8, I received an error I could not get past. I was able to resolve this by updating the WUA. Is there a minimum WUA version required for IE 8 to install?
A: We generally suggest that you are using the latest WUA. Is there any reason why you wouldn't be able to do so?

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: @Chris Wilson, that research add-on has probably half a billion instances impacting IE8 negatively. It is an example of terrible programming using resource even when not being activated. A 'little' pressure towards the office team should be considered ?
A: Yup, didn't mean to say we won't ask.

Frank [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: /have you recieved any information from thrid party developer on their slow/incompatible addon's which have been updated ?
A: yep, we can recurring phone meetings with top add-on developers, and we work on stabilty issues with them. All the top add-ons have auto-updaters - I recommend using those :) (We've heard reports that some users turn off all auto-updaters - and this will cause stability issues in the long term)

Allison [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Re: [101] In fact, I've sent a mail for myself, but I never got any answer. Maybe lost in the tons of mails you receive every day :)

Q: 2nd try: We have some users who hit a "limit" of possible open IE8 sessions. At some point IE8 refuses to add a new tab or new window. It is hard to repeat, and the # of sessions open varies. For the users plagued with the problem, it happens often. Ideas?
A: That is very odd - it sounds like an add-on could be involved...Could you use no-addons mode and try the same scenario?

Q: You have introduced some accellerators for digg, facebook and so on, do you have plans for more of these "partnerships" down the road with large websites?
A: we try and reach out to popular web services/sites, but for the most part we try and create opportunities for sites to build their own accelerators and slices

Harel Williams[MSFT] (Moderator):Q: (4) Why the address bar doesn't take more in account the URL when we begin to type in the address bar ? When I type "mic", I prefer www.microsoft.com than mysite.com/microsoft-is-making-a-micro and that have "Microsoft is ..." as title...
A: Hey Fremy, typed URLs generally come out on top of history items in the smart address bar. However, we save around 20-25 type URLs to be searched via the smart address bar. It is possible microsoft.com could have been knocked out of your list depending on how often you type URLs directly in the address bar.

Q: I've two buttons on the toolbar, one says, "InPrivate Browsing" and the other "In Private". WHY?
A: One is InPrivate Browsing (don't cache information on my local machine from sites I visit), one is InPrivate Blocking (avoid cross-domain information leakage)

Q: Link to the screencast showing IE8's rendering (with a major misplacement of the hover dot - in some cases making the menu impossible to use) - at http://kortlink.dk/6h2x . There is no custom code involved - jujst standard Office Communicator, MOSS and IE8
A: Thanks. The SharePoint team is investigating.

Q: The French localized version of IE8 has many translation mistakes (minor grammar error, or word-by-word translations that mangles the original meaning, e.g. "Normes d'IE 8" for "IE 8 Standards" [mode]). It would be nice to get a better translator. :)
A: Lionel, thanks for the heads up. I am going to forward your feedback to the international PM
