Peter,
When I reloaded my MCE system this week from the MSDN CDs, I noticed the
second CD does have a Sonic directory, but I haven't had time to take a
closer look at its contents. Maybe it _does_ have the Sonic encoder there
but doesn't load it by default?

That includes a Data DVD-burning plug-in, which only
enables you to copy a DVR-MS file to a DVD. It doens't
include the encoders required to enable you to create a
standard Video DVD.

I just bought my windows XP media center a few weeks ago and I can record TV
programs but cannot create a video DVDD. It seems to create a data DVD. I
cannot get teh disc format option after you hit Create4 DVD... I am wondering
if the DVD burning software is installed incorrectly or if I am doing
something wrong?

If you bought a pre-built MCE machine from one of the large PC makers (Dell,
Sony, etc.) it should have the correct encoders installed. If it is from a
smaller local PC maker, it may not have the proper stuff installed or you
may be required to manually add some software. Contact the manufacturer's
tech support, to find out
If you built the system yourself, the software definitely won't be installed
since it isn't a part of the basic OS from Microsoft.

Kathie and Peter:
To provide another viewpoint, I just tried creating a DVD in Media Center
Edition 2005. What I got was two AVI files copied to the DVD; MCE would only
inspect the length of the files in bytes, not minutes of video, so I should
have been suspicious.
I have a "home brew" machine and am trying to solve a mystery with my DVD
writer.
