  Kathie:

Great article, thanks to you and Tim for putting this together.

I have only one concern with this, and it's less about the article and
more about how the product is packaged. The DVD burning feature that
Tim refers to is *not* included with all MCE systems and in fact many
users are frustrated by the lack of this feature in their system.

In marketing materials and in articles such as this one, Microsoft
continues the erroneous message that this is core functionality of MCE
2005. Users will read this article and find that their menus do not
allow them to burn a video DVD.

The following users will be affected by this:

- users who upgraded to MCE 2005
- users who built their own machines
- users who bought machines where the OEM did not include the DVD
burning plugin

That's a fairly large set of users who are going to be confused by this
article (and are already confused that their machines don't do this).

As I said above, it's not the article's fault but it does perpetuate a
communications issue between Microsoft and its users.

Pete

  Peter,

When I reloaded my MCE system this week from the MSDN CDs, I noticed the
second CD does have a Sonic directory, but I haven't had time to take a
closer look at its contents. Maybe it _does_ have the Sonic encoder there
but doesn't load it by default?

That includes a Data DVD-burning plug-in, which only
enables you to copy a DVR-MS file to a DVD. It doens't
include the encoders required to enable you to create a
standard Video DVD.

Bummer. From what I've heard here, only the HP 2005 upgrade CD includes the
Sonic encoders necessary to make a standard video DVD.

I just bought a brand new Dell w/ Media Center 2005. The DVDs that I am
burning from my recorded programs are not playing in my DVD player. Is this
thread confirming that Media Center 2005 does not support the creation of
standard video DVDs?
Thanks!

I just bought my windows XP media center a few weeks ago and I can record TV
programs but cannot create a video DVDD. It seems to create a data DVD. I
cannot get teh disc format option after you hit Create4 DVD... I am wondering
if the DVD burning software is installed incorrectly or if I am doing
something wrong?

If you bought a pre-built MCE machine from one of the large PC makers (Dell,
Sony, etc.) it should have the correct encoders installed. If it is from a
smaller local PC maker, it may not have the proper stuff installed or you
may be required to manually add some software. Contact the manufacturer's
tech support, to find out

If you built the system yourself, the software definitely won't be installed
since it isn't a part of the basic OS from Microsoft.

  Kathie and Peter:

To provide another viewpoint, I just tried creating a DVD in Media Center
Edition 2005. What I got was two AVI files copied to the DVD; MCE would only
inspect the length of the files in bytes, not minutes of video, so I should
have been suspicious.

I have a "home brew" machine and am trying to solve a mystery with my DVD
writer.

  Kathie:

I use Roxio Easy Media Creator 8.0 for burning DVD's on my HP Pavilion and
it works great but when I try to use the "Burn CD/DVD" function inside of
Windows Media nothing happens. And I mean nothing, not even a beep. Can you
direct me to forum or website that might have more on this subject so I can
try and figure out what's going on with my system. I suspect that I've never
turned on the DVD burning software that came with the system and that the
Roxio application's tweaks to the registry files might have something to do
with it.

Thanks

El Sifon

We cannot check serial numbers - you need to contact the PC's manufacturer
to ask that. If your PC has a DVD recorder, then you can record to DVD. If
you have Media Center 2005, or Vista Ultimate or Home Premium, then you
could record a TV program if you have a TV Tuner.

We can't answer your How questions until you give us a lot more information
on What hardware and software you have...

I understand that the edition of Movie Maker on an MCE2005 system can burn a
movie directly to a DVD... but Tim's article doesn't make mention of it.

My Toshiba laptop with MCE2003 doesn't have an available upgrade to MCE2005
and I'd like any pointers to info about the feature. Thanks,

PapaJohn
