You can store your pictures, video, music, and TV shows on a PC that is running Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. For many people, these digital files have a great deal of meaning—especially the digital pictures and home videos that you’ve captured. You can make a backup of your files by copying them to a CD or DVD. With a backup stored in a safe place, your memories are protected from computer failure, theft, fire, and other events that might harm your computer. When you back up your files, you also free more space on your hard disk so that you can store more files.
To back up your recorded TV, pictures, videos, and music to a CD or DVD:
- Insert a writable CD or DVD in the CD or DVD drive.
Tip: Writable DVDs store about six times more data than writeable CDs, so choose a writeable DVD if your computer supports it. |
 - Press the Green Start Button on your remote to open the Media Center Start menu, and then select More Programs.
 - On the More Programs page, select Create CD/DVD.
 - On the Disc Format page, select Data DVD, and then select OK.
 - On the Name This DVD page, enter a name for your DVD if you want to change the default setting. To enter the name, use the number keys on your remote to enter the title of the series that you want to record. For example, to enter the letter "a," press 2 once. To enter the letter "b," press 2 twice. An index of all letters is displayed on the screen. When you’re finished, select OK.
 - On the Select Media page, select one of the following four options:
- Recorded TV
- Music
- Pictures
- Videos
 - On the My Pictures page, select the files that you want to back up. You can select individual files to back up or you can back up entire folders by selecting Select All.
 - Do one of the following:
- To add music, TV files, or other types of media, select Add More, and then return to step 6.
Tip: Watch the space remaining area that is located at the bottom of the screen. Depending on how large your files are, you may need to use more than one DVD to back up all your files. |
- To review the list of files that you selected and start the process to burn the files to a DVD, select View DVD.
 - On the View DVD page, select Create DVD. A list of files that are being copied to the DVD is displayed.
 - In the Initiating Copy dialog box, select Yes.
 - In the Creation Progress dialog box, select OK to continue using your computer. You can also wait for the CD or DVD to finish copying.
 - After Media Center creates your CD or DVD, it will automatically eject the disc. Remove the CD or DVD from the tray, and then close the tray.
Tip: After you remove the CD or DVD from the tray, remember to label it. |
- When the Completing Disc Creation dialog box is displayed, select Done.
It's a good idea to back up your important files regularly, just like you change the oil in your car, pay your bills, or visit the doctor. Make it part of your routine to back up any important digital pictures or home videos that you capture immediately after you copy them to your computer.
