Collection and Use of Information About Your Computer
When you use Movie Maker, Microsoft does not collect any information that personally identifies you or allows us to contact you (such as name, address, telephone number, e-mail address). If you use certain features of Movie Maker, you may transmit personal information to third parties. These features are described later in this privacy statement.
Movie Maker contains Internet enabled features that automatically collect information from your computer ("computer information") and send it to Microsoft. This computer information is generally not personally identifiable and includes certain standard information such as your IP address, operating system version, Movie Maker version, and your regional and language settings. The privacy details for each feature listed below disclose what other information is collected and how it is used. Information that is collected by or sent to Microsoft may be stored and processed in the United States or any other country in which Microsoft or its affiliates, subsidiaries or agents maintain facilities.
Security of Your Information
Microsoft is committed to protecting the security of your information. We use a variety of security technologies and procedures to help protect your information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. For example, we store the information you provide on computer servers with limited access that are located in controlled facilities.
Changes to the Privacy Statement
We may occasionally update this privacy statement. When we do, we will revise the "last updated" date at the top of the privacy statement. We encourage you to periodically review this privacy statement to be informed of how Microsoft is protecting your information.

Feature List
Name of Feature: Project Properties Dialog Box
What This Feature Does
To help you identify and organize the movies you create, the Movie Maker Project Properties dialog box allows you to specify related information about each movie such as the movie title, author, description, rating, and copyright.
Information Collected, Processed, or Transmitted
If you enter personal information such as your full name, address, or phone number in the fields of the Project Properties dialog box, then this information could personally identify you. This information is not sent to Microsoft, but anyone who has access to your movie files could view the information.
Choice/Control
Make sure you only enter personal information in the Project Properties dialog box that you do not mind if others see when they are watching your saved movies. By default Movie Maker sets the author name to the 'Full Name' for the current user. If you do not want this name to be stored in your movie files, you should change the name in the Default author field in the Options dialog box.
To change the default author name that will be used for new projects:
1. | On the Tools menu, click Options. |
2. | On the General tab, select the current default author name in the Default author box, and then type a new default author name or press delete if you do not want an author name to be associated with future projects. |
To change the author name for a project you have already created:
1. | Open the project in Movie Maker. |
2. | On the File menu, click Properties. |
3. | On the General tab, select the current author name in the Author box, and type a new author name or press delete if you do not want an author name in the file. |
Name of Feature: Send Movies to the Web
What This Feature Does
Movie Maker's Send Movies to the Web feature lets you use third-party video hosting providers to share your movies with friends and family via the Internet.
Information Collected, Processed or Transmitted
When you select "The Web" saving option in the Save Movie Wizard, Movie Maker communicates your geographic region and language settings to Microsoft.com so that a current listing of providers available in your geographic region or country can be downloaded to your computer. This list is based on your current Regional and Language settings in Control Panel and will be stored in your Local Settings. Similarly, when you click the "Sign up now" link in the Save Movie Wizard, your geographic region and language settings are used to launch a Web page of available providers.
Use of Information
When you upload a movie to a third-party video hosting provider via the Internet, Movie Maker sends the user name and password information you enter in the Save Movie Wizard to the provider. This information must match the user name and password information you established with the third-party video hosting provider. Related information about the movie such as movie title, author, description, rating and copyright is also sent to the provider. For more information about this related information, please see the Movie Maker Project Properties Dialog Box described above.
The video hosting providers are not under Microsoft's control. Microsoft is not responsible for the security or privacy of content uploaded to these providers and recommends you contact your provider if you have any questions in this regard.
Choice/Control
Sending movies to the Web is optional.
Important Information
The Send Movies to the Web feature can be disabled by Group Policy. If your network administrator disables the Save to the Web feature, you will not be able to use the feature to save a movie to a video hosting provider on the Internet.
Name of Feature: Download Codecs Automatically
What This Feature Does
If a codec (software used to compress and decompress digital content) required for playback of a movie is not on your computer, Movie Maker can download it from a Microsoft Web site if you are connected to the Internet and the codec is available. The download codecs automatically setting is turned off by default.
Information Collected, Processed or Transmitted
If you have selected the Download codecs automatically check box and Movie Maker determines that you don't have the appropriate codec to play back your content, this feature will make a request to a codec server at Microsoft and will download and register the codec that you need. The request that is sent contains an identifier for the codec you need.
Use of Information
The identifier for the codec does not contain any personal information or anything that identifies your computer; it only identifies the codec that you need to download.
Choice/Control
If you would like to turn on automatic codec downloading in Movie Maker:
1. | On the Tools menu, click Options. |
2. | On the General tab, check the Download Codecs Automatically check box. |
You must be connected to the Internet in order to obtain new codecs. To change this setting back and prevent Movie Maker from downloading codecs automatically:
1. | On the Tools menu, click Options. |
2. | On the General tab, clear the Download Codecs Automatically check box. |
Important Information
The Codec Download feature can be disabled by Group Policy. If your network administrator disables this feature, you will not be able to automatically download codecs that are not installed on your computer.
