Correcting Text with Input Panel
You can use Tablet PC Input Panel and your tablet pen to enter text on your Tablet PC. Input Panel is especially useful in situations where typing might be disruptive, such as a meeting or a class.
In Input Panel, the writing pad and the character pad convert your handwriting into typed text, and the on-screen keyboard looks and acts like a standard keyboard. You can use the writing pad and the character pad to correct text before you insert it. You can use the writing pad, the character pad, and the on-screen keyboard to correct text after you insert it.
Correcting Text Before You Insert It
Both the writing pad and the character pad display your handwriting-recognition results before you insert your text. Recognized text appears below your handwriting in the writing pad, and it replaces your handwriting in the character pad.
If the writing pad or the character pad does not recognize your handwriting correctly, there are several ways that you can correct it before you insert it. In the character pad, you can replace or delete a letter.
Character pad:
In the writing pad, you can correct one word at a time by using one of the following methods:
| • | Replace the word that needs correcting with a similar word. |
| • | Rewrite letters. |
| • | Delete a word. |
| • | Delete a letter or a space. |
| • | Insert a new letter between two existing letters. |
| • | Add a space between letters. |
Writing pad:
To improve the likelihood of accurate handwriting-recognition results, the writing pad compares its interpretation of what you wrote with words and characters in the handwriting-recognition dictionary. The dictionary contains common words. If you frequently need to correct the same word when you use the writing pad, consider adding that word to the dictionary. This is especially useful for unique words, such as names and acronyms. There is a separate handwriting dictionary for each person who logs on to your Tablet PC. When you add words, you add them only to your dictionary.

To correct text in the character pad before you insert it
To replace a letter
| • | Write the letter that you want to use on top of the letter that you want to replace. Wait for the handwriting recognizer to recognize the letter that you want to replace before you replace it. |
To delete a letter
1. | With your tablet pen, point to the letter that you want to delete. |
2. | Tap the arrow that appears below the letter. |
3. | Tap Clear. |
To correct text in the writing pad before you insert it
1. | Tap the recognized text that you want to correct. |
2. | In the correction area, do one of the following: Replace the word that needs correcting with a similar word | • | Tap the suggested word that you want to use. |
Rewrite letters | • | In the writing spaces of the correction area, write the letters that you want to use on top of the letters that you want to replace. |
Delete a word Delete a letter or a space 1. | With your tablet pen, point to the letter or space that you want to delete. | 2. | Tap the arrow that appears below the letter or space. | 3. | Tap Delete. |
Insert a new letter between two existing letters | • | Write the new letter in the space between the two existing letters. |
Add a space between letters 1. | In the writing spaces of the correction area, with your tablet pen, point to the letter that you want to follow the space. | 2. | Tap the arrow that appears below the letter or space. | 3. | Tap Insert Space. |

To add a word to the handwriting-recognition dictionary
| • | After you use one of the steps above to correct a word, but before you tap OK, tap Add to dictionary. |
Correcting Text After You Insert It
If you have already inserted the text, but you need to correct it, the easiest thing to do is to select the text that you want to correct, and then replace it with new text.
To correct text after you insert it
1. | Select the text that you want to correct. |
2. | Open Input Panel. |
3. | Using the writing pad or the character pad, rewrite the word, and then insert it. - or – Using the on-screen keyboard, type the word you want to replace the incorrect word. |
Troubleshooting
I selected a word and then opened Input Panel to correct it, but the correction tools do not appear for my selected word.
Correction options for inserted text are not available in all programs. To correct your selected text, you need to rewrite the word and insert it.
When I use the writing pad, my recognized text never appears in Input Panel. Instead, it appears in the text entry area in the program.
Automatic handwriting recognition is turned on.
To turn off automatic handwriting recognition
1. | Tap Tools  , and then tap Options. |
2. | Tap the Writing Pad tab. |
3. | Under Automatic text insertion, clear the Automatically insert text after a pause check box. |
4. | Tap OK. |
I frequently need to correct the same word when I use the writing pad.
Consider adding that word to the handwriting-recognition dictionary. This is especially useful for unique words, such as names and acronyms.
To add a word to the handwriting-recognition dictionary
1. | In the writing pad, write the word that you want to add to the dictionary. |
2. | Tap the recognized text for the word. |
3. | If necessary, correct the spelling of the word. |
4. | Tap Add to dictionary. |
