Check your version of Windows Messenger

As of this writing, the latest version of Windows Messenger is included as part of Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), which is available as a free download.

What is Windows XP SP 2?

Windows XP SP2 is an update for Windows XP that strengthens security on your system; provides protection against viruses, hackers, and worms; and includes Windows Firewall, Pop-Up Blocker, and Windows Security Center. If you currently use Windows XP, download this free Service Pack to ensure that your computer is as secure as possible.

To find out which version of Windows Messenger you are currently using:

Click Help in the Windows Messenger window.

2.

Click About Windows Messenger. The About Windows Messenger window displays the version number of Windows Messenger currently installed.

Upgrade your version of Windows Messenger

Upgrading to the newest version of the software gives you access to all the latest features and security updates available for Windows Messenger. If you are using an earlier version of Windows Messenger, it's easy to download and install the latest version.

Before you upgrade:

Run your favorite antivirus software.

Back up all your important files.

Close any open applications.

To download and install Windows XP SP2:

1.

Go to the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Web site.

2.

Click Download SP2 from Microsoft Update (on the right side of the page).

3.

Follow the steps to download and install SP2 on your computer.

After the installation is complete, you will be able to begin using your new version of Windows Messenger.

To start Windows Messenger, click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Messenger.
