Microsoft Research Asia Advanced Technology Center (ATC) was formed in November 2003 as an important part of Microsoft's investment in China. ATC's goals are to incubate advanced technologies, to develop core products, to transfer research innovations, and to help develop the software industry in China.
As one of the most successful software enterprises in the world, Microsoft has accumulated years of experience in large software system development and technology creation. As a part of Microsoft's commitment to the growth of the software industry in China, ATC aims to attract and nurture top caliber software professionals, become a center of engineering excellence, and share knowledge and experience in large scale software development.
In the past year and half, ATC has grown rapidly to nearly 300 talented employees in software design, test and program management. ATC is working on products in the areas of mobile devices, internet based communication, search, server products, and user interface. In addition, ATC is collaborating with many universities and Chinese software companies on people training and software development processes. In this coming new year, ATC will expand the number and the scope of the technologies and product areas that it works on. ATC Shanghai was formed in March 2005 as a testament to Microsoft's commitment to fostering the growth of the software ecosystem in China. It will work closely with partners in the Shanghai area and help to develop software talents in the region. It will also share Microsoft's experience in R&D management and software development with the IT industry in the area.
Windows Server Division is a branch of Microsoft Windows Servers and Platform group (one of the fastest growing businesses in Microsoft). The team in China is a part of ATC Shanghai and is also an extension of the Windows Servers and Platform group in China. The team will focus on technical areas such as high performance computing, web service, and system management.
To build a strong team of engineers in China for Windows Servers and Platforms group (such as Developer Platform), ATC Shanghai is looking for software talents with the following attributes: passion for technology and shipping software that can influence millions of users around the world, excellent software design skills, and through understanding of operating systems, internet technologies, distributed systems, driver and user interface development.

Dr. HongJiang Zhang
Managing Director
Advanced Technology Center, Microsoft Research
HongJiang joined Microsoft in 1999 and was the Assistant Managing Director and Senior Researcher of Microsoft Research Asia, responsible for research groups in media processing and management, information processing, data mining, web search, and distributed systems, as well as legal, IP and operations of the lab.
HongJiang has been actively engaged in R&D activities in the areas of video and image analysis, processing and retrieval, and computer vision, and is well-known for his pioneering work in video and image content analysis, representation, retrieval and browsing. Previously, Zhang was a research manager at HP Labs, in Palo Alto, Calif, and was with the Institute of Systems Science, National University of Singapore. He received his Ph.D. from the Technical University of Denmark, and his bachelor degree of science degree from Zhengzhou University, China, both in electrical engineering.
HongJiang has authored and edited four books, over 300 refereed papers and book chapters, and numerous special issues. Many of these works have become classic references. He has 50 U.S. patents and pending applications. He serves on the editorial boards of several IEEE and ACM journals, and is the incoming Editor In Chief of IEEE Transaction on Multimedia. He also serves in committees of a number of international conferences, and will be the General Co-chair of the 10th ACM Multimedia Conference.
