Most of the features that are available in the Data Migration Manager are now available in the Import Data Wizard in Microsoft Dynamics CRM. You can use the Import Data Wizard to import:
- Multiple files that contain record types that are related to each other, such as accounts with related contacts.
You can compress multiple files of the same file type in a .zip file and then import the one .zip file. This means all the files in the .zip file are only .csv files, only .txt files, only .xml files, or only another another type of file.
- Records that need to be assigned to different Microsoft Dynamics CRM users.
- Notes and attachments.
You can also use the Import Data Wizard to create custom record types and fields during the import.
Now you’re ready to begin the record import process. Follow these steps:
- First, prepare the file that holds the data you want to import. You can import data for multiple record types at a time. You must put data for each record type in a separate file. The steps for preparation are in Work with Imports — see the section "Prepare a file for import.” It also includes a sample of actual comma-separated value file, which you can use as a model for your own import files.
The easiest way to import records is to use the “Map Automatically” option. The Import Data Wizard automatically maps all the files and the column headings with Microsoft Dynamics CRM record types and fields if:
- The file names exactly match the display name of the record type and
- The column headings of the file you are importing exactly match the display names of the fields in the record.
For example if you’re importing contact records, you will notice that the Contact record type in Microsoft Dynamics CRM includes a field called First Name. So, if your file name is contact.csv and this file contains the column header as First Name, the Import Data Wizard will automatically map the file. When the files or columns cannot be automatically mapped, you will be shown the mapping pages to manually map your source files or columns to Microsoft Dynamics CRM record types and fields.

- When the import file is ready, import the records. To do this, follow the steps in Work with Imports — see the section "Import records from a file."
During import, you might run into problems or errors, such as:
- You get the error message "The source data is not in the required format." This error occurs when the number of columns in the data row differ from the number of columns in the column headings of the source file. For example, if you have two column headings in a contacts file but try to import three columns of data, the third column does not have a column heading and will not import. Verify that commas are in place for column headings and that data items exist for each record.
- You get the error message “Waiting” or “Waiting for Resources” during import. Because importing is processed as a background job, it requires the Microsoft CRM Asynchronous Processing Service on the Microsoft Dynamics CRM server and might have to wait for it.
