New Surface Pro (5th Gen) with LTE Advanced FAQ

Find answers to frequently asked questions about Surface Pro (5th Gen) with LTE Advanced. For additional help, visit your local Microsoft Store. See store locations >

What is LTE?

LTE stands for Long Term Evolution and is a 4G wireless broadband standard. It's the fastest wireless network for smart devices available. Surface Pro (5th Gen) with LTE Advanced can reach 4G speeds based on carrier and coverage areas.

Do all Surface Pro (5th Gen) devices support LTE?

No, only the Surface Pro (5th Gen) with LTE Advanced, Intel Core i5/256GB SSD/8GB RAM model supports LTE connectivity.

Which carriers support LTE?

Most major carriers support LTE and provide physical SIM cards. Surface Pro (5thGen) with LTE Advanced also has an option to use embedded SIM card (eSIM). Even without Internet connectivity, eSIM gives you pre-loaded access to the Ubigi portal to quickly sign up and purchase a prepaid data plan for single-day or monthly, domestic or international use.9

What SIM card do I need for my device, and where do I get it?

You can purchase a Nano SIM card through your mobile operator. Or, you can use the embedded SIM (eSIM) that comes built into Surface Pro (5th Gen) with LTE Advanced.

What's the difference between Nano SIM and eSIM?

A Nano SIM is a small physical card that fits into your device identifies what type of plan it's using based on a profile. An embedded SIM (eSIM) is embedded on your device's motherboard or part of the processor—there's nothing to insert and nothing to remove.

How do I connect my device once the SIM is ready?

Select the "Network" icon on the lower right of the taskbar, and then select the cellular network in the list. If the "Let Windows manage this connection" checkbox is cleared, select "Connect". If the checkbox is selected, you'll get connected to cellular data automatically when you're not connected to another type of network, such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

I'd like to use eSIM. How does it work?

If you don't have a specific LTE carrier, or don't plan on using your existing Nano SIM, you can select the eSIM provided with your Surface Pro (5th Gen) with LTE Advanced.

How do I know if I'm getting LTE?

Your device will display a banner at the top of the screen to notify you of your network coverage. A network indicator will be displayed based on network coverage and device type, and switches between Wi-Fi and LTE networks automatically almost anywhere.
