Tara Subkoff first made an impression on audiences and critics portraying a mentally challenged mute girl opposite Martin Sheen in the 1993 crime thriller When the Bough Breaks. She subsequently found increasing work in a number of independent films, most notably Alex Sichel's All over Me (1996), which cast her as an emotionally fragile Hell's Kitchen teenager, and Whit Stillman's The Last Days of Disco (1998), in which she played a young college graduate trying to make a living in early-'80s New York.
