Sharpening the focus on social-emotional skills

As we learn more about the needs of tomorrow’s workforce, social-emotional skills are taking centre stage alongside cognitive skills and content knowledge in today’s classrooms. We’re learning that mindset is twice as predictive of a student’s academic achievement than their home environment or demographic.

Our research also indicates that new thinking and practices are needed to ensure students develop both the cognitive and social-emotional skills necessary to succeed in their personal and professional lives. While the class of 2030 will need deeper cognitive skills in priority areas such as creativity and problem solving, social-emotional skills such as relationship building, self-awareness, and self-recognition will be increasingly important, since they not only support academic learning but also promote well-being.

To meet these needs, technology will play a critical, complementary role in how students learn and how educators support them.

Personalized learning accelerates progress

We can help teachers personalize learning for diverse classrooms and nurture self-directed, confident learners. When we shift to a student-centred educational model, we empowercustomized learning based on individual needs

Our research suggests that an especially promising way to accelerate social-emotional skill development will be for teachers and schools to take greater advantage of personalized learning approaches. These approaches increasingly leverage technology to give teachers new and broader ways to measure students’ progress on key competencies and help customize instruction to meet individual needs.

Committing to personalized learning and ensuring a deliberate focus on social-emotional skills also contributes to a wider set of life, health, and well-being outcomes.
