The purpose of The next AI Guardians competition

Young people today are keen to effect change. They have big dreams for the future and are willing to work hard to achieve them. They believe in the power of the individual to make a difference and will jump at the opportunity to leave their mark on the world.

The next AI Guardians competition challenges students, researchers and professors from universities in Central and Eastern Europe to solve local or global education pain points using AI. Who better to tackle these issues than those who encounter them on a daily basis? The challenge aims to empower students and faculty members alike, as they have the best chances to recognize the faults in our educational system and are better equipped to come up with proper solutions. Education is the cornerstone of every society, so the goal meets the aspirational needs of a generation that is determined to make the world a better place.

The teams progress through 3 rounds of elimination, where they gradually reveal the finer details of their ideas. Advanced Examinations Management System

The team set out to overcome some of the challenges posed by online learning, specifically online examination across multiple remote locations with no supervision. Their focus was to ensure that no cheating or plagiarism was tolerated. The solution was to create an innovative advanced examination platform for instructors to use that is both scalable and secure. Their system relies on Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing tools to provide automated tips and answers, while creating a databank of questions. At the same time, they used Machine Learning and Computer Vision to track students' attention, focus and emotion through their web cameras for the duration of the exam. Based on the tracking data and browser activity, the report will determine how students performed on the exam and whether there was any cheating or other suspicious behavior involved.

KeyAccess

Inspired by a friend who struggles with cerebral palsy, who had the ingenious idea to customize his keyboard to better fit his unique needs, the team set out to build a software that enables keyboard customization for users who face similar challenges. With this in mind, the team created a tool for both Windows and UNIX operating systems, that allows full control over the keyboard and the way it is set up. The program uses remapping software to enable any key to be replaced by one or multiple other keys on the board (depending on how you press it, i.e. long press / pressing it multiple times). It also uses advanced deep learning solutions to enable typing assistance and multiple autocomplete functions, depending on the type of text the user is trying to write.

This group of students observed that the current lecture-based educational system was built on what they believe to be an outdated model from the industrial era. They argue that the system must be updated with something that is more engaging for students. Their solution came in the form of the “knowledge tree”, a personalized way of learning where students can structure their educational goals into clusters of knowledge called “nodes”. After each node, an algorithm will generate a questionnaire to evaluate the students understanding of the information contained within that node. Students who score high on certain topics can help other students learn and build their knowledge tree. The new system would put the student's learning in their own hands, teaching them valuable skills like collaboration, knowledge filtering and critical thinking that are essential for today’s skill-based jobs.

Attendance System

The aim of the E-Attendance project is to automatically record students’ attendance, actions and emotions with a subsequent analysis. This will provide educators with valuable insight on how to improve their teaching to better reach students. This system works with camera footage but has also been extended to the Microsoft Teams platform, as the current situation requires a different approach. Such a solution has high potential in other areas as well and does not have to be used solely in education.

Smart Educational Assistant (SEA)

The Smart Educational Assistant (SEA) provides users with the best online courses for learning, based on the skills required by the user’s chosen profession. The AI will organize these courses into a learning plan for each skill set. This helps students keep their focus by choosing the best program for them, instead of tackling multiple courses each day. The process is entirely automated and only takes a few minutes. The team wanted to enable students that are learning from home to gain access to the best up-to-date courses available, while also helping companies improve their workers' qualifications with periodic training, without spending a lot of time and money on finding the right material and monitoring the learning process.

Smarty

Smarty is an application that uses Machine Learning to provide users with accurate and precise bits of knowledge in the form of lectures, exercises and learning games. It also enables cross-discipline knowledge assessments in the field of Computer Science, by generating new problem sets. The team aims to enable students who want to learn, to sort through complicated and useless information, by gaining access to valuable, precise data in a way that is easy to assimilate. The app tests users on every newly-learned topic and relies on gamification to help improve the learning process. Teachers can use the app for blended learning, to test students and to determine which topics they are struggling with.

2. Keep in mind the main issues our judges will look after. 

3. Impact, relevancy and deployment practicality in real life. Does it actually solve/ address a global issue and is it really deployable in an efficient way? Think of implementation/ roll out plan. 

4. Complexity of the algorithm, what data sources are being used and how.

5. What other workloads besides AI/ ML/ cognitive are being pulled/ consumed by the solution? 

6. Has it been tried before? Is it something totally new? If not, how does it compare/ how is this better than similar projects/ what is the actual innovation?
