Recertify with Microsoft Virtual Academy

Update (October 2016): Please note that the "Recertify with Microsoft Virtual Academy" option will be withdrawn on 31 March 2017 to coincide with the withdrawal of all MCSE and MCSD specialities that require recertification. New expert-level certifications are now available, and these do not require recertification. To learn more, visit the Certification overview page.

You've proven yourself. As a Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE), you passed a rigorous series of exams to earn your certification. But, as the pace of changing technology accelerates, so does the challenge of keeping your skills up to date.

Now, you have a convenient way to get recertified. Through Microsoft Virtual Academy, you can recertify your MCSE certification by reviewing a prescribed set of skills and passing all related assessments—on your own schedule.

Note Not all MCSE certifications can be recertified through Microsoft Virtual Academy at this time. Recertification exams are available for all MCSE and Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer (MCSD) specialities.

To renew your MCSE certification through Microsoft Virtual Academy:

  1. Verify your Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) transcript to ensure that you have a qualifying MCSE certification for recertification. Please note that recertification is used exclusively to renew a current certification and cannot be used to upgrade an older certification, such as Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer.
  2. Find the skills path for your expiring certification, listed in the sections that follow. Please note that recertification skills paths might evolve over time. If you have already recertified, you are not responsible for taking the assessments on the new content until your next recertification cycle. However, for your own development, you may want to review those new skills at an earlier point in time.
  3. Review all items for each module, and pass all of the module-level assessments for each of the Microsoft Virtual Academy courses in the path. Please note that, to earn completion credit for a given module, a tick must appear next to each item in that module.
  4. When you have completed Step 3, please submit the following information to certquest@microsoft.com.
    • The name of the certification speciality (for example, MCSE: Communication)
    • Your Microsoft Academy user name
    • Your Microsoft Certification ID (MC ID)
    • A PDF copy of your Microsoft Virtual Academy transcript (your MCP transcript will reflect the new skills and expiry date for your MCSE after Microsoft has verified that you have passed all assessments.)

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the recertification option through Microsoft Virtual Academy to earn my initial MCSE certification?
No. Recertification is only available to professionals who are already MCSE certified. Visit the MCSE certification page to learn more about getting your initial certification
How do I benefit from getting recertified through Microsoft Virtual Academy?
Recertification through a continuing education option such as Microsoft Virtual Academy helps you maintain your skills on your own schedule.
There is a lot of learning material associated with each skills path. Will this option take me longer to complete than preparing for and passing a single exam?
It may take less time. Microsoft Virtual Academy courses include assessments after each module, so you are able to validate the skills you already have and focus your studies on less familiar topics. If you fail an assessment, you will be referred to the course content where those concepts were covered. You can take the associated assessment again as needed.
Will the recertification exams still be available?
Yes.
Are there any costs associated with recertifying through Microsoft Virtual Academy?
No. However, if you would like further training, consider the practice test and instructor-led training listed in the preparation options for the corresponding MCSE recertification exams, all available at an additional cost.
Once I inform Microsoft that I have completed my skills path, how long does it take for the recertification status on my MCP transcript to be updated?
Assuming that you have completed all the requirements, Microsoft will verify your Microsoft Virtual Academy record and update your MCP transcript within five business days of receipt of your request.
When will Microsoft Virtual Academy recertification paths be available for other MCSE and MCSD credentials?
At this time, only the MCSE certifications listed above can be recertified through Microsoft Virtual Academy. Recertification exams are available for all MCSE and MCSD specialities. For updates to this program, please make sure to regularly review the MCP Flash newsletter.
What are the recertification requirements and policies associated with my particular Microsoft Certification?
For additional questions related to recertification, review the Exam policies and FAQ.
