Refining the oil supply chain

Rockwell Automation is using Microsoft Azure IoT services to extend its business and provide managed monitoring and support for its products in the field. The company has developed cloud-based solutions, using software, sensors and devices to predict equipment failures along the supply chain, track its performance in real-time, and help refine designs and processes to prevent those failures in the future. Rockwell Automation is creating connected enterprises by building new solutions to transform the petroleum supply chain and reap bottom-line results in global productivity and competitiveness.

“What we're talking about is delivering a degree of collaboration and visibility unheard of in the oil and gas industry,” said Doug Weber, business manager, remote application monitoring for Rockwell Automation. “With sensors, software and the cloud, these disparate assets can become part of a connected enterprise, powered at its core by a rich flow of data.”

Three customers, three solutions

Whether on a drilling platform at sea, a filling station, or any of the thousands of miles in between, Rockwell Automation is not only ensuring equipment operates as it should, but is building its own reservoir of data and drilling into new forms of value it never anticipated.

Hilcorp Energy Company’s oil-drilling platforms use highly efficient and reliable electrical submersible pumps from Rockwell Automation that are connected to the cloud, so they can be monitored continuously from the company’s command room.

Trigg Technologies modernised its oil-transfer “skids” with sensors and the cloud to enable them for remote service and maintenance.

And one major oil company is working to connect and cloud-enable fuel pumps. Cloud gateway appliances at each fueling station collect data on everything from inventory to equipment functioning and securely send it to Rockwell Automation’s cloud platform.

The business impact

Rockwell Automation is the world’s largest industrial automation and information firm with 22,500 employees and customers in more than 80 countries. Rockwell Automation wanted to strengthen its competitive advantage and open new business opportunities in the oil and gas industry by automating the collection and analysis of data from remote installations across the petroleum supply chain.

Rockwell Automation created a solution to monitor expensive capital assets and use that data to improve efficiency, drive better performance and enable innovation. Based on Azure IoT services, the solution collects, integrates and organises sensor data from remote equipment across global supply chains to support real-time insight, predictive analytics and preventive maintenance.
