Sign inAfter some recent poor experiences with Apple hardware, I decided to check out alternatives when researching a replacement for my MacBook Pro. I always rated the Surface Pro but disliked the alcantara on the Laptop 2. The recent launch of the Laptop 3 with material finish options led me to the Oxford Circus flagship store. Satya, Panos and the Surface team have made MSFT cool now. The store, the staff and the products made for a great experience. You guys have truly out-Appled Apple. Thank you! hi
Very nice looking all round laptop. I needed a secondary computer for doing work while travelling while also able to run streaming services and general internet browsing. The keyboard is probably the best I have used on a laptop, with plenty of travel and feedback and the back light for the keys is a nice brightness for that late night typing. I have the Cobalt version that has Alcantara material and it feels somehow soft while not actually being soft. The screen is crisp, clear, and bright, also touch screen; good for lazily skipping videos. I must point out this is not a gaming machine, while it is capable of playing light games don't expect it to play anything ground breaking. Battery lasted around 9 hours, which is good as I was watching a fair amount of videos. The aluminium cover is good looking and svelte but shows finger prints and smudges really easily. I can see it being easily damaged by light scratches and dents, though nothing yet so I could be pleasantly surprised.
The laptop is overall great. I was expecting Windows 10 Pro, just like the other reviewer, but I'm resourceful and found a way around this because of MS's false advertising when I preordered. Update: 2 weeks later and I've returned mine. I'm very disappointed, having waited until the 3rd iteration to jump in, I figured the bugs would be minimal. Instead, it near-overheats when charging (the fans are of full speed for the duration), unless the laptop is off. It runs too warm, and the fans are on full when Windows is set to performance mode, even at idle. WiFi disconnects or doesn't work when waking the laptop, and performance it a little lackluster for my liking. Maybe next time, Microsoft?
Outstanding in every way. I'm not sure why others are complaining because we can't fault it in any way. No problems with light bleed, WiFi or anything else and the build quality is exceptional. Ignore the stupid reviews - obviously the same pixel count on a larger screen is going to give you an overall lower resolution but it's up to you to check before you buy. That's why they go to the trouble to list the specs. I agree they should have replaced Windows Home with Pro but it's a simple mistake, not false advertising. A professional user would know enough about business to get the company to upgrade it rather than spend time whinging about it. He wouldn't know what to do with the Pro version if he had it.
It's a pity
Surface laptop gets better with each iteration, but every time microsoft do something daft to reduce the sales potential of the device. The first iteration was held back by unnecessarily cheap and slow SSDs, and and the lousy Windows 10S. Third time around after finally ditching the awful alcantara deck and making the SSD replaceable - both huge steps forward - they choose to make the most popular and versatile platinum colour unavailable with the new metal deck in the 13.5inch. The black metal finish is a fingerprint magnet so isn't a good choice for a metal deck, and the pink gold, while pretty, has limited appeal. If you want platinum with metal deck the only option is the 15inch, which does seem nice, but is hobbled with an older generation AMD processor, and is needlessly large - with narrower screen bezels the footprint could be just marginally bigger than the 13.5inch as the inwards and batteries are no bigger than the 13.5inch. Maybe Surface Laptop 4 will finally nail it!
Absolute rubbish. Ships with windows 10 home not pro, so if you are serious about security, don't buy the surface laptop. Microsoft, who initially confirmed the OS was 10 pro, have now backtracked and have admitted the website is wrong, but won't do anything about it apart from ask for £200 extra to upgrade to pro. Really poor service and incorrecly sold product. Update - MS have now updated the website to show the OS in 10 Home. Dont be caught out
Had Surface pro 3 and 5. I usually love Microsoft products, however: Bought 15” Ryzen 7 but returned. Display has light bleed at bottom edge. Hardware continually disconnects (Lan, WiFi, mouse). Friends 13” has these same problems. Not fixed by installing latest drivers etc. To top it off the screen resolution is lower than the surface pro 5 which is 12”. Meaning desktop is 150% not 200%. Also a JavaScript build was 2 seconds slower than the surface pro 5 (50s compared to 48s) meaning upgrade is pointless. It looks like there’s more effort in the packaging than the hardware. On positive side the laptop looks good and is thin.
