Migration information

In August 2018, we announced plans to deliver two new cloud datacenter regions in Germany offering in-country customer data residency as well as full connectivity to Microsoft’s global cloud network. These new regions are now live with the general availability of Azure, Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365 and Power Platform. As a result, we are closing the current Microsoft Cloud Deutschland. This page contains essential information on how to migrate your subscriptions and maintain your services if you choose to do so before Microsoft Cloud Deutschland is closed on October 29, 2021.

The new cloud regions provide access to the latest productivity solutions and cloud services to meet customers’ evolving business needs, including:

Frequently asked questions

|

A: In 2015, we first introduced a new type of cloud region in Germany designed to offer an additional layer of privacy controls for German customers in highly regulated industries. These regions, referred to as the Microsoft Cloud Deutschland, are isolated from Microsoft’s global cloud network and access to customer data is managed by a German data trustee. Over the past five years, customers’ needs have shifted, and the isolation of Microsoft Cloud Deutschland imposed limits on its ability to address the flexibility and consistency customers desire today. Based on this evolution in customers’ needs, our cloud strategy for Germany will focus on the new cloud regions in Germany which are consistent with our global cloud offering.

A: We are no longer accepting new customers or deploying any new features or services in Microsoft Cloud Deutschland.

Besides that, the new regions in Germany:

  • Offer market competitive pricing for Azure, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Dynamics 365, and Power BI.
  • Are connected to the Microsoft global network, offering hundreds of network edge sites, peering locations, and egress points to deliver a robust user experience anywhere in the world.
  • Help you meet local customer data residency requirements within Germany.
  • Access to a more full-featured global cloud offering, including the latest version of our services and new capabilities including Microsoft Teams. Compare products by region for Azure, Microsoft 365, and Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Power BI.
  • Offer full functionality, enterprise-grade security, and comprehensive features to help customers meet compliance and regulatory requirements.
  • Are accessible through existing online services contracts.

A: The supplemental changes to the Microsoft Cloud Deutschland OST can be found HERE.

A: On October 29, 2021, we are retiring the Microsoft Cloud Deutschland regions which use a data trustee. At that time, all subscriptions will be disabled. We recommend moving to the new German datacenter regions or one of our other datacenter regions in Europe before this time. If you have not migrated your Microsoft subscriptions to another region by October 29, 2021, you will no longer have access to your services. With the move to a different region, there may also be changes to the subscription pricing and features, as well as a new annual renewal date.

A: We have designed a process to ensure customers can migrate subscriptions to the new regions and minimize service disruptions. Please take the following steps to use the tools and services made available to help you through this process.

  • Azure: By October 29, 2021, migrate to an alternate region. You can begin migrating your Azure resources today, unless you also have Microsoft 365, Microsoft Dynamics 365, and/or Power BI subscriptions. If you have Azure with Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, and/or Power BI, please follow the steps below. Any services not migrated by October 29, 2021 will be stopped.
  • Microsoft 365: When you renew your subscription, you automatically opt-in for a Microsoft-assisted migration. If you prefer to move earlier, you can opt-in today.
  • Dynamics 365 and Power BI: When you renew your subscription, you automatically opt in for a Microsoft-assisted migration. If you prefer to move earlier, you can opt-in today for Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Power BI.

A: Azure: You can begin migrating your Azure resources to another region today. If you have Azure with Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, and/or Power BI, please follow the steps below.

Microsoft 365, Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Power BI: When we are ready to start your migration, we will inform you through the Message center in the Microsoft 365 admin center. We are ramping up migrations in Q4 of 2020, and will begin bulk migrations in January 2021.

A: We support the automated migration of your Microsoft 365 environment as well as the underlying tenant information that is common between Microsoft 365 and Azure.

If you want to keep a common Azure Active Directory for Azure and Microsoft 365, you’ll need to wait and migrate Azure after your Microsoft 365 migration is complete. Since you may not complete your Azure migration for a period of time after Microsoft 365 is migrated, you will still have access to Azure resources from https://portal.microsoftazure.de. Be sure to complete your Azure migration before October 29, 2021.

If keeping a common Azure Active Directory is not a priority for you or you need more than 3 months to migrate all your Azure Applications, you can disconnect your Azure services from your Microsoft 365 .DE tenant by migrating to a new region today.

A: For Microsoft 365, Microsoft Dynamics 365, and Power BI your Microsoft Cloud Deutschland subscriptions will be disabled, and users will be unable to access services, files and applications. If you have already paid for the subscription post October 29, 2021, you will be reimbursed for the excess payment.

For Azure, your subscription will be disabled and all Azure resources will be stopped. You will no longer be able to create new resources or modify existing resources. Data within your Azure resources will continue to be available for a short time, so you can complete your migration.

A: Yes. We will store your data for 90 days after the expiration date of October 29, 2021. On January 27, 2022, your subscription will be deprovisioned and your data will be deleted.
