This February, educators across the country will celebrate and honor the experiences of Black and African American people and their central role in US history. The observance is an opportunity for educators to prioritize anti-racism both in their curricula and classroom environments\u2014throughout Black History Month and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>To help educators have anti-racism conversations with their students, Microsoft has partnered with experts across the subject. \u201cThe more we normalize discussions about racism, and the more voices and narratives we bring into the classroom, the better,\u201d said Ken Shelton, a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert and educational strategist who contributed to several new resources for educators.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we are releasing the new \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aka.ms\/anti-racism-educators-students\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anti-racism journey for educators with students<\/a><\/strong>\u201d\u2014in addition to a wide variety of other free resources to help explore and learn more about how to bring these conversations into the classroom. While these resources are being released during Black History Month, they can help keep this discussion front and center year-round.<\/p>\n<h3>Anti-racism journey for educators with students<\/h3>\n<p>The newly released \u201cAnti-racism journey for educators with students\u201d is a kit of resources, grounded in social and emotional learning and curated by experts in the field of equity and inclusion, restorative practices, and education technology, that empowers educators to build the knowledge and capability needed to support equity and anti-racism work with students. It\u2019s a first step toward establishing inclusive, caring classrooms where teachers can create equitable environments and bring social justice topics into the classroom. After completing the courses, educators will have access to resources that help students on their own learning journeys.<\/p>\n<h3>Microsoft Store virtual field trips<\/h3>\n<p>Microsoft Store offers a variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/store\/workshops-training-and-events\/?rtc=1#page=1&amp;pageSize=24&amp;topic=10000092\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>free virtual experiences<\/strong><\/a> for students to celebrate and honor Black history. These field trips offer immersive and interactive experiences for every grade level, interest, and subject matter, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Museum tour of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/store\/workshops-training-and-events\/black-history-month-virtual-museum-experience-george-washington-carver-museum3671800679\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">George Washington Carver Museum<\/a><\/strong>: Students will learn about the life and inventions of George Washington Carver, the most prominent Black scientist of the early 20th century.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Book reading of \u201c<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/store\/workshops-training-and-events\/black-history-month-virtual-book-reading-juneteenth-for-mazie-by-floyd-cooper-k-2nd-grade705669493\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Juneteenth for Mazie<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u201d by Floyd Cooper<\/strong>: In this virtual book reading, students will learn about Juneteenth through the eyes of Mazie. As she discovers her family\u2019s history, she learns about her great-great-great-grandfather\u2019s freedom from slavery.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Museum experience of the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/store\/workshops-training-and-events\/black-history-month-virtual-museum-experience-negro-league-baseball-museum-3rd-grade-up197670819\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Negro<\/strong><\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/store\/workshops-training-and-events\/black-history-month-virtual-museum-experience-negro-league-baseball-museum-3rd-grade-up197670819\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/store\/workshops-training-and-events\/black-history-month-virtual-museum-experience-negro-league-baseball-museum-3rd-grade-up197670819\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Leagues Baseball Museum<\/strong><\/a>: This museum is dedicated to preserving the history of Negro League Baseball in the US\u2014professional teams formed because Black and African American people were not accepted into the major and minor baseball leagues until the 1940s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Flipgrid virtual events<\/h3>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/store\/workshops-training-and-events\/flipgrid#page=1&amp;pageSize=24&amp;keyword=Virtual%20Field%20Trip\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Flipgrid\u2019s virtual field trips<\/strong><\/a>, students can learn about race, equity, and justice from renowned authors. A few of the virtual field trips available include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=24TajC5i86o&amp;feature=youtu.be\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Celebrate World Read Aloud Day with Vashti Harrison<\/strong><\/a>: Vashti Harrison\u2019s groundbreaking children\u2019s book, \u201cLittle Leaders: Bold Women in Black History,\u201d has inspired young readers to celebrate the leaders in their own communities.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kxXkiKTPEvs\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Learn how to be an anti-racist accomplice with Frederick Joseph<\/a><\/strong>: Students can learn how to be anti-racist with New York Times bestselling author and activist Frederick Joseph.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Minecraft: Education Edition (M:EE) lessons  <\/h3>\n<p>Through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/education\/blog\/2021\/01\/14\/celebrate-martin-luther-king-jr-day-and-black-history-month-with-new-lessons-and-a-free-demo-world\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Minecraft\u2019s free lessons<\/strong><\/a>, students can investigate ideas behind identity, understand important moments in Civil Rights history, and learn how Black Lives Matter is continuing the work of racial justice today. Each lesson comes with additional resources for educators to accompany the lesson and foster discussion.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/education.minecraft.net\/lessons\/who-is-dr-mlk-jr\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Who is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.?<\/a><\/strong>: In this lesson, students will work together to create museum galleries depicting the different identities of Dr. King.
