From <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/en-hk\/2020\/02\/05\/microsoft-empowers-hong-kong-teachers-and-students-with-real-time-interactive-remote-learning\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>eLearning innovations<\/strong><\/a> to keeping students\u2019 spirits high with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/blog\/2020\/03\/02\/working-remotely-during-challenging-times\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>photo and cooking challenges<\/strong><\/a>, teachers and students have shown extraordinary resilience during this difficult time.<\/p>\n<p>Now, as countries around the world take steps to contain the virus, many schools and universities globally are moving classes online. However, teaching and learning from home is a big change for most students and Educators. Without a physical classroom, how can you check that students are engaged and progressing? How do Educators and faculty stay connected?<\/p>\n<p>We want to help ease the transition, so we have asked experienced online Educators\u2014including Educators from <a href=\"https:\/\/customers.microsoft.com\/en-CA\/story\/734298-catholic-education-western-australia-office365\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA)<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/customers.microsoft.com\/en-CA\/story\/odea-high-school-office365-onenote-surface-teams-school-data-sync-streams-united-states\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>O\u2019Dea High School<\/strong><\/a> here in Seattle\u2014to share the tips they\u2019ve gathered over years in remote education.<\/p>\n<p>But we also want to do more. Microsoft Teams is available for free to educational institutions through the <a aria-label=\"Office 365 A1 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/academic\/compare-office-365-education-plans?rtc=1\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Office 365 A1<\/strong><\/a> offer. This provides a completely free customized hub for class teamwork with Teams that includes video meetings, online versions of the Office 365 apps as well as compliance tools, and information protection.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Moving to a virtual classroom\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As schools move to a remote learning environment, Teams can provide an online classroom that brings together virtual, face-to-face connections, assignments, files and conversations in a single platform accessible on a mobile device, tablet, PC or browser.<\/p>\n<p>To help make this process as simple as possible, we have created a <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/best-practices-for-school-leaders-creating-teams-and-channels-in-microsoft-teams-for-education-f3663ad9-a835-4971-9acb-6725a543c003\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>best practices<\/strong><\/a> guide for <strong>School Leaders and IT<\/strong> to get up and running quickly with Teams so their students and staff to begin communicating remotely. Once Teams is set up, <strong>Educators and staff<\/strong> have the ability to <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/Create-a-class-team-in-Microsoft-Teams-fae422eb-58b7-4431-9ff2-a4b9b6ae7c5b\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>create their own class in Teams<\/strong><\/a>, add selected students, share lessons, create assignments, collaborate virtually in real-time and do grading and provide personalized feedback all in one hub.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips from <strong>expert Educators<\/strong> to help you get started:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have interactive discussions with your class by sharing your screen to present your lesson and encourage students to ask questions using the chat feature.<\/li>\n<li>You can show a film by <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/share-system-audio-in-a-teams-meeting-dddede9f-e3d0-4330-873a-fa061a0d8e3b\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>sharing your system audio<\/strong><\/a> in a meeting.<\/li>\n<li>During a lesson, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/roles-in-a-teams-meeting-c16fa7d0-1666-4dde-8686-0a0bfe16e019\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>moderate the class discussion<\/strong><\/a> by muting students, making them presenters, or if needed, removing them from the meeting. Record the lesson, so students can review it on their own time.<\/li>\n<li>Record any class session in case some students can\u2019t join during the live session.<\/li>\n<li>For assessments, you can easily create and grade quizzes in Teams using <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/create-a-form-in-microsoft-forms-39a23830-452d-474c-ae1f-47a6ebefa21a\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Microsoft Forms<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Let your students know your office hours and when they can reach you for questions.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage Students to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GIRVT4jiS9g\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Immersive Reader in Teams<\/strong><\/a> to help them read messages and understand assignment prompts, enabling them to follow along and contribute.<\/li>\n<li>Create a Fun Channel. Have a virtual science fair or poetry reading group. This will go a long way with students of all ages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Getting support and training for Educators and Staff\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We want to support Educators with practical guides, professional development, and how-to information that will help empower them, and their students, to stay motivated and engaged. We have created a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/microsoftteams.eventbuilder.com\/TeamsEducation\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>webinars<\/strong><\/a> that can be accessed on demand for Educators to get started on Teams and have new resources in our Microsoft Educator Center to also help Educators get up and running. We also invite you to join our newly launched Remote Learning Community where Educators launching distance learning programs from around the globe are sharing best practices, and our Microsoft Education team is answering questions in real time.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/microsoftteams.eventbuilder.com\/TeamsEducation\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Webinars<\/strong><\/a>: Getting started with Teams<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/education.microsoft.com\/en-us\/resource\/4c0c02c0\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Learning Resources<\/strong><\/a>: Foundational skills for teaching online<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/aka.ms\/JoinRemoteLearningCommunity\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Join the Remote Learning Community<\/strong><\/a>: Connect with Educators, IT, and Microsoft Experts<\/li>\n<li><a aria-label=\"Create Teams (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/MicrosoftTeams\/get-started-with-teams-create-your-first-teams-and-channels\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Create Teams<\/strong><\/a> for your different University Departments<\/li>\n<li>Adjusting to <a aria-label=\"working from home   (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/blog\/2020\/03\/10\/staying-productive-while-working-remotely-with-microsoft-teams\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>working from home<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Help Students stay engaged\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Continuing to drive student engagement and focused learning can be a challenge, especially for those moving to remote learning for the first time. Educators and parents need support to help make this work. To help <strong>parents<\/strong> and <strong>guardians<\/strong> support their children, we have created a <a aria-label=\"Remote Learning Guide for students and parents (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/remote-learning-with-office-365-guidance-for-parents-and-guardians-89d514f9-bf5e-4374-a731-a75d38ddd588\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Remote Learning Guide for students and parents<\/strong><\/a>. For <strong>Educators<\/strong>, tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/info.flipgrid.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Flipgrid<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/education.skype.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Skype in the Classroom<\/strong><\/a> and <a aria-label=\"Minecraft: Education Edition (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/education.minecraft.net\/blog\/microsoft-extends-access-to-minecraft-education-edition-and-resources-to-support-remote-learning\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Minecraft: Education Edition<\/strong><\/a> can also help mix up the day and give students ways to communicate and demonstrate learning in new ways.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, here are some tips we have heard from <strong>Educators<\/strong> who have helped create healthy and effective learning environments that allow students to thrive in a virtual setting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stay healthy and charged<\/strong>: Learning from home can be a new experience for students. Encourage them to take breaks between lessons to stretch, hydrate, or just unplug.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stay focused<\/strong>: Find a quiet place where they can focus on lessons with minimal distractions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stay connected<\/strong>: School is important from a social perspective. Not seeing friends face-to-face can be hard for students. Help them adjust by encouraging them to schedule a virtual lunch session for classmates to stay connected. If they are out sick or can\u2019t join class because of an appointment, remind them to <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/change-your-status-in-teams-ce36ed14-6bc9-4775-a33e-6629ba4ff78e\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>change their status<\/strong><\/a> or set a status message so their classmates are also aware.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Motivate your class<\/strong>: Use Teams to encourage joyful challenges throughout the week by creating a \u2018Fun Activities\u2019 channel. For example, hold a cooking contest and have students share their creations in the channel. Recognize your students by <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/Send-Praise-to-people-50f26b47-565f-40fe-8642-5ca2a5ed261e\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>sending them Praise<\/strong><\/a> in the channel, inspiring more students to participate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bring lessons to life<\/strong>: Make a lesson interactive by enabling <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/use-whiteboard-in-microsoft-teams-7a6e7218-e9dc-4ccc-89aa-b1a0bb9c31ee?ui=en-US&amp;rs=en-US&amp;ad=US\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Whiteboard in Teams<\/strong><\/a> during a live lesson. Have students come up to the whiteboard and solve a math problem or demonstrate their art skills, just like they would in a physical classroom.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Connect with students individually<\/strong>: It can be difficult to gauge how students are doing without seeing them in person, so connecting individually is very important. You can support students 1:1 in a chat, creating a safe space for students to ask their questions and get the extra help they need.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I hope these tips from our educator community help you create an engaging remote learning environment in which both students and Educators can stay connected. We recognize navigating this way of learning presents challenges that are new to just about everyone impacted.
