This month, we&#8217;re contributing to a conference by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iota-tax.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Intra-European Organisation of Tax Administrations<\/a> (IOTA). These gatherings reinforce a shared commitment to building resilient, inclusive, and digitally empowered public services\u2014and offer a powerful platform to show how Microsoft partners with governments to make that vision real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/industry\/government\/public-finance\">Explore solutions in Microsoft for public finance <\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Three common themes emerged at these public finance, customs, and trade events. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-ai-is-driving-smarter-faster-public-sector-services\">1. AI is driving smarter, faster public sector services<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AI is reshaping public finance, trade, and tax administration. At the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aciti.org.au\/international-trade-and-finance-in-the-digital-economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2025 International Trade and Trade Finance in the Digital Economy Conference<\/a>, leaders explored how AI is driving productivity, resilience, and sustainable growth. With only 2\u20133% of global trade currently digitalized, the opportunity for efficiency gains is immense\u2014a single electronic document can save billions in direct costs and create even more value in global trade.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI-powered solutions are already delivering measurable results:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Frictionless borders<\/strong> and trusted trader onboarding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Empowered customs officers<\/strong> with real-time data and mobile tools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AI-based risk management<\/strong> for fraud detection and compliance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sustainable logistics<\/strong> that reduce carbon footprints and improve efficiency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These capabilities are already in use\u2014reducing goods clearance times by up to 30% and cutting document review durations by 90%.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The General Directorate of Customs of the Dominican Republic (DGA) recently modernized its back-office and customer service operations using Microsoft intelligent cloud solutions, reducing some tasks from seven days to just 24 hours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) uses technology innovation to access the latest data, promote new markets, suggest targeted opportunities, and invite clients to events.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CSX uses AI and low-code automation to help customers track freight, manage shipments, and access rail logistics services through its online portal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-building-inclusive-public-services-through-collaboration\">2. Building inclusive public services through collaboration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Transformation in public finance is a shared journey. The OECD Forum on Tax Administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/valentinaion_our-tax-committee-was-pleased-to-contribute-activity-7378728410950475776-UdYh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Working Group on Tax Administration 3.0<\/a> highlighted the power of taxpayer ecosystem cooperation. Governments and industry partners are working together to build trusted, interoperable systems that allow:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Secure data collaboration<\/strong> across agencies and sectors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Quantum-safe digital identity<\/strong> and verifiable credentials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Privacy-preserving technology<\/strong> with confidential computing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cybersecurity<\/strong> and access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Contextual intelligent automation<\/strong> with AI agents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This collaborative mindset is driving the next phase of digital transformation, ensuring that modernization efforts are resilient, inclusive, and aligned with the needs of all stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-putting-taxpayers-first-with-data-powered-services\">3. Putting taxpayers first with data-powered services<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The shift toward taxpayer-centric, data-driven services is another recurring theme. Agencies are using real-time insights, digital identity, and privacy-preserving technologies to deliver:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Personalized taxpayer experiences<\/strong> and simplified compliance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Outcome-driven investments<\/strong> that improve service quality and transparency.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AI copilots<\/strong> that empower auditors, analysts, and citizens.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples abound: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en\/customers\/story\/1689174937531212442-information-system-authority-government-azure-en-estonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Estonia\u2019s B\u00fcrokratt<\/a> solution simplifies taxpayer experience with AI-powered natural language interactions, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en\/customers\/story\/1599215592999217728-defra-government-dynamics-365\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Kingdom\u2019s Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs<\/a> uses data-driven budgeting to enhance financial operations. In collaboration with the<em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en\/customers\/story\/1653565125024864159-inter-american-center-of-tax-administrations-costa-rica-financial-services-e-invoicing-anomaly-detection-solution-accelerator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inter-American Center of Tax Administrations<\/a> (CIAT), Microsoft has helped build intelligence tools that detect anomalies and empower tax agencies to become more efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-s-next-for-ai-in-public-finance-transformation\">What\u2019s next for AI in public finance transformation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As we prepare for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iota-tax.org\/events\/2025\/6th-annual-international-conference-real-time-economy-development-and-tax-administrations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6th Annual International Conference on &#8220;Real-Time Economy Development and Tax Administrations,&#8221;<\/a> the focus is on interoperability, data trust zones, and AI-powered tax ecosystems. Microsoft will be contributing to this dialogue and sharing how our technologies are using real-time data services, secure collaboration, and next-generation AI agents for public finance agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across all these engagements, one message is clear: the future of public service is collaborative, intelligent, and taxpayer-first.
