These principles include:<\/p>\n<p>(1)\u00a0Reliability and Safety, (2)\u00a0Fairness, Inclusiveness, and Bias, (3)\u00a0Transparency and Accountability, (4)\u00a0Privacy and Security\u00a0and (5)\u00a0Preparing the Health Care Profession.<\/p>\n<p>These topics\u00a0each\u00a0present\u00a0significant potential\u00a0obstacles\u00a0for\u00a0successful\u00a0development and\u00a0deployment of AI-infused technologies in the healthcare sector.\u00a0\u00a0As\u00a0food for thought\u00a0we\u00a0have\u00a0extracted a few\u00a0key\u00a0challenges\u00a0and opportunities associated\u00a0with\u00a0some of\u00a0these principles\u00a0below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>R<\/b><b>eliability and safety<\/b>\u00a0are\u00a0pre-eminent when considering\u00a0any tool\u00a0that will be deployed in a sector where the mission is to improve\u00a0the health of patients,\u00a0and we know\u00a0AI-infused technologies will still need to work through national regulatory processes\u00a0that govern drugs and devices.\u00a0 We also believe that unique aspects of AI, particularly AI systems that \u201ccontinuously learn,\u201d will mean that\u00a0those\u00a0existing regulatory frameworks may need to be revised\u00a0and updated\u00a0to\u00a0reflect the dynamic nature of AI-infused technologies.\u00a0\u00a0We are currently involved in\u00a0initiatives with industry and regulators to help address these concerns and\u00a0ensure that safe and reliable AI-infused technologies will benefit patients.<\/li>\n<li><b>F<\/b><b>airness, inclusiveness<\/b><b>,<\/b><b>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/b><b>bias<\/b>\u00a0have also\u00a0been historical challenges for any data-centric work, including in healthcare.\u00a0Many people have some sense of where bias along race or socioeconomic status may have crept into training data.\u00a0 But,\u00a0beyond addressing training data bias,\u00a0what\u00a0must we do\u00a0in inclusive product design\u00a0to ensure\u00a0that we do not leave communities locked out of benefits to AI?
