From how we interact with our friends and family to working from home and so much more. For me personally, juggling the complexity of remote work, the immense disruption, and ever-changing priorities and precautions have been a daily learning and growth experience. Yet I know many are facing far greater challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past two weeks, we have had the opportunity to speak to automotive industry leaders from around the globe about the staggering impact of COVID-19 and the responses they are taking. Faced with almost a complete halt of all production, mandated plant closures, retooling of plants to support growing medical equipment needs, and major health and safety concerns for their employees, many automakers are navigating unprecedented times.<\/p>\n<p>While all automakers have faced critical disruptions to supply and demand in their businesses, there are many examples of automakers stepping up during these trying times by reconfiguring their production, supply chains, and services to deliver critical medical supplies. Microsoft applauds their resiliency and innovation and will continue to support our customers in these incredibly important efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Here are just a few of the amazing stories across the industry where leadership is stepping up to address this global crisis:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gm.com\/masthead-story\/manufacturing-ventilator-ventec-covid.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GM is partnering with Ventec Life Systems<\/a> to help increase the production of ventilators. The machines are vital for patients with severe cases of COVID-19 infection.<\/li>\n<li>A consortium of major UK industrial, technology, and engineering including automotive, has come together to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/2020\/03\/30\/global-companies-come-together-to-make-ventilators-for-the-nhs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">produce medical ventilators for the\u00a0National Health Service (NHS)<\/a>.\u00a0The supply chain of the ventilators is being supported by\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/dynamics.microsoft.com\/supply-chain-management\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management<\/a>, and Microsoft worked with Accenture to launch it in just three weeks.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.industryweek.com\/supply-chain\/inventory-management\/article\/21126950\/ford-to-partner-with-3m-ge-healthcare-to-produce-health-equipment-for-outbreak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ford, GE, and 3M announced<\/a> that they are combining resources and expertise to respond to a dire need for ventilators, respirators, and medical protective equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Due to a lack of mainstream resources, Ford is <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1824253\/coronavirus-ford-3m-and-ge-collaborate-to-ramp-up-medical-equipment-production\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">now using existing stock car<\/a> parts and other non-traditional components as COVID-19 spreads across the US.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/global.toyota\/en\/newsroom\/corporate\/32232533.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toyota has taken a global approach to help with COVID-19 recovery<\/a> including production and supply of medical equipment, patient transportation, and support of drug development and infection control research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From an industry analyst perspective, experts have been providing their own guidance for adjusting to our current circumstances.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>McKinsey has come up with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/advanced-electronics\/our-insights\/coronavirus-five-strategies-for-industrial-and-automotive-companies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">five-stage approach<\/a> to success in the long run: Resolve, resilience, return, reimagination, and reform.<\/li>\n<li>Gartner says automotive OEMs and car dealers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2020-03-30-gartner-says-automotive-oems-and-car-dealers-must-imp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">must improve their online sales models<\/a> to mitigate a Coronavirus-related sales slump.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>COVID-19 response: Resources, solutions, and guidelines for your business<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to these analyst recommendations, we are proud to collaborate with our partners around key resources and solutions that can help support the tremendous work of our customers.<\/p>\n<h2>Supporting remote assistance for frontline employees\u00a0and customers<\/h2>\n<p>To remotely assist those workers who are still needed on the manufacturing frontline\u00a0and\u00a0supporting customers operations,\u00a0Microsoft\u00a0and\u00a0partners such as\u00a0<strong>BluePrism<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>PTC<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Realwear<\/strong>,\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Tulip\u00a0<\/strong>have announced programs for customers engaged in COVID-19 related activities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/dynamics.microsoft.com\/customer-service\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dynamics\u00a0365\u00a0Customer Service<\/a>, enables\u00a0contact center employees to provide consistent, personalized support while working remotely. Customers are taking advantage of the ability to gain insights into case volume topics, ensuring\u00a0agents are properly distributed across channels, and quickly deploying\u00a0chatbots that are trained to respond to the highest volume of inquiries.<\/li>\n<li>Even as challenging as it is to maintain social distancing and still be productive, we are seeing innovation help address this necessity. Here are some examples:\n<ul>\n<li>By leveraging mixed reality tools such as Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/hololens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HoloLens<\/a>, companies can expand their ability to enable workers to be remote, and yet still be right next to someone that needs assistance. I encourage you to watch the video of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/hololens\/apps\">PTC delivering<\/a> HoloLens capabilities combined with their solutions.<\/li>\n<li>With <a href=\"https:\/\/dynamics.microsoft.com\/mixed-reality\/guides\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dynamics 365 Guides<\/a>, operators get step-by-step instructions as they progress through their tasks and related content and documents.<\/li>\n<li>With <a href=\"https:\/\/dynamics.microsoft.com\/mixed-reality\/remote-assist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dynamics 365 Remote Assist<\/a>, the operator shares a session with a remote expert to collaborate on solving technical issues.<\/li>\n<li>Dynamics 365 Remote Assist allows field technicians and engineers can collaborate with colleagues and experts from different locations, reducing travel and resolving some of the immediate obstacles facing us all.\u00a0In fact, Dynamics 365\u202fCustomer Service or Dynamics 365 Remote Assist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/dynamics365\/bdm\/2020\/03\/26\/resources-and-support-for-our-global-customers-impacted-by-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">may be\u202favailable free of charge for up to 6 months<\/a> if you are implementing a solution in response to COVID-19, either\u202fon\u202fa Microsoft-provided template or custom implementation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>To increase the predictability and reliability of the work being performed by manufacturers the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueprism.com\/covid-19-blue-prism-response\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blue Prism COVID-19 Response Program<\/a>\u00a0is taking applications for their robotic process automation (RPA) resources to help maintain critical business continuity.<\/li>\n<li>To provide technical support to your manufacturing and service employees, PTC is making their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptc.com\/en\/support\/enablement\/COVID19-Resources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vuforia Chalk augmented reality (AR) remote support and collaboration technology freely available to their customers and partners<\/a>\u00a0to use through June.<\/li>\n<li>RealWear\u00a0has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/realwear.com\/blog\/realwear-rapid-response-to-covid-19-including-donations-of-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contributed its headset technology to the medical effort in China<\/a>\u00a0and just announced its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realwear.com\/newsroom\/press-releases\/realwear-announces-microsoft-teams-for-hmt-1-and-hmt-1z1-headsets-to-empower-firstline-workers-on-the-edge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">integration with Microsoft Teams<\/a>, enabling industrial workers to use both hands for complex work procedures while remotely collaborating with subject matter experts wherever they are in the world.<\/li>\n<li>Tulip is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tulip.co\/covid-19-response\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">offering support and free use of their manufacturing app platform<\/a>\u00a0to any manufacturer or open-source manufacturing effort engaged in fighting COVID-19.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These\u00a0are just some of the ways that Microsoft and our partners are working to support\u00a0the health and safety of our communities as well as\u00a0help you to ensure business continuity and mitigate risk.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft is proud of all these amazing leaders and their innovative work and we want you to know that we are here to support you as a partner during these challenging times.
