How can we, as an insurance business community, best help one another and help our clients in these unprecedented times?<\/p>\n<p>It\u202fstarts with\u202funderstanding the impact of working from home on a business, as well as the business impact of\u202fa global pandemic on our industry. Key questions we\u2019ve been exploring include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What\u2019s\u202freally\u202fhappening?<\/li>\n<li>What\u2019s the short-term impact versus longer-term impact to the insurance industry?<\/li>\n<li>What can we do today to be more prepared\u00a0in\u00a0the future?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These topics are top of mind when we meet (virtually) with our insurance customers across the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The impact of uncertainty: Multiple perspectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The following perspectives were assembled after reviewing recent published, publicly available articles and interviews.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unknown impacts from claims<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There will be unknown impacts from claims for Life, P&amp;C, and Health due to the realities of COVID-19. No one can predict how long COVID will persist, the rate of infections and hospitalizations, or how compliant society will be across time with social distancing and other protective guidelines. Individual and community actions will have a dramatic impact on the infection rate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Potential payment delays<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many companies\u202fhave closed\u202ftheir physical premises or adjusted operations to meet state distancing requirements and reduce face to face interactions.\u202f\u202fNaturally, many people are concerned about the personal financial impact of closing businesses. Although governments are looking to ease this burden for their constituents, insurance companies can help their customers by being understanding of\u202fpotential payment delays.\u202f At the same time, companies will need to examine the impact to their cash flows of premium lapses and a shortage of new business revenue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reduced mobility for work and travel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Travel restrictions will\u202flikely\u202freduce income to insurance\u202fcompanies, namely travel insurance and \u2018pay as you go\u2019 coverage. With more people working from home and driving less, some insurance carriers have offered refunds and\/or incentives to customers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Declining\u202fglobal market\u00a0volatility\u202fand low interest rates<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While some sectors have\u00a0recovered or shown improvement since\u202fthe lowest points during COVID, many still haven\u2019t and some businesses have had to close their doors. \u202fThe insurance industry is impacted by\u202fmarket-sensitive\u202fproducts that offer\u202fguaranteed\u202freturns,\u202fwhich are harder to meet with investment\u202finstability.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, these setbacks are temporary until we see some improvement in infection rates, but\u00a0the unknown impacts are concerning\u00a0and difficult to predict. Companies will\u00a0be looking to \u201cstress test\u201d their financials to be sure that they are making the proper moves to support their customers long term.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Refocus, reinvent, recover<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The realities of pandemic living have revealed a new and timely set of concerns for all people to consider.
