A: MapPoint was first released in 1999. The product grew out of a 1988 blockbuster designed by four UK developers who bootstrapped it with other jobs. They released the beta to a few journalists in 1988 and it spread like wildfire. The consumer products were a hit for many years both in Europe and the U.S. and was discontinued December 31, 2014.
