And the baseline requirements for getting a good [\u2026] education, it feels like it&#8217;s a lot harder on the kids.\u201d While Mom\u2019s approach for supporting the kids\u2019 educations was rooted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365-life-hacks\/organization\/good-study-habits-that-make-the-grade\">dedicated and rigorous study time<\/a>, Dad felt that adding in tracking using one of his beloved spreadsheets would help their small scholars see the results of their efforts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph-1\">\u201c[Noreen] was, you know, really focused on having the kids [sit] down, making sure that [they] study,\u201d says Abid. \u201cAnd I found that really intense, but it was appropriate for them. My job was to make sure that [there] was balance, [\u2026] that they were working hard, but also felt rewarded.\u201d \u201c[We tracked] the [tests] in Excel\u2014and Abid was the master at the EXCEL spreadsheet,\u201d Noreen is sure to mention.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"heading-h2\">A different kind of growth chart<\/h2>\n<div class=\"m-banner f-align-left pt-0\" data-grid=\"col-12\">\n<p class=\"c-paragraph-1\">The family\u2019s tracking process is fairly straightforward, as tracking processes go, thanks to Abid\u2019s robust professional experience with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/excel\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Excel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph-1\">\u201c[E]ach time we did a test [for practice or officially], [I\u2019d list] the date, the type of test, [and] the results.\u201d Three simple but key data points for each test session led to big insights. \u201cOver time, that became really valuable. [We] ended up with this really nice graph with scatter data and a trend showing that they were improving overall. [\u2026] [T]here&#8217;s so many opportunities throughout the journey for milestones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph-1\">Treats for Abid and Noreen\u2019s kids vary, but are all fun reflections of their efforts and their interests:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul class=\"c-list\">\n<li>Extra screen time, such as a minute more with a digital hobby or an extra episode of a favorite TV show <\/li>\n<li>Tasty takeaway treats, like going out for milkshakes or fun pizza dinner\u2014or the kids choosing a new mealtime adventure<\/li>\n<li>A brand-new book, chosen from a savvy backlog collection kept by Mom and Dad <\/li>\n<li>A visit to the prize box, full of parent-curated interactive games and toys <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph-1\">Their family isn\u2019t the only one using this method to track kids\u2019 test results; there are others with whom they share progress. One year, she and Abid were tasked with creating a slideshow. Not only did they put together a touching montage of the students\u2019 time in primary school, Abid took it a step further to add a fun activity to the celebration: He created a game called \u201cGuess the Baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph-1\">\u201cHe\u2019s always had these fantastic ideas,\u201d Noreen is quick to say. \u201cIt was all of the children in the [graduating class] [\u2026]\u2014a baby picture of [each] of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph-1\">According to Abid, \u201cWhat that essentially entailed was a slideshow of all the leaving children, a picture of them when they were babies.
