Making Clutter in Office 365 even better

Clutter is a feature in Office 365 designed to help you focus on the most important messages in your inbox by moving lower priority messages out of your way and into a new Clutter folder. We began rolling out Clutter to Office 365 last November for English-speaking customers worldwide and we’re working on expanding to other languages.

Today we are announcing new capabilities for Office 365 administrators to better manage how Clutter works.

Ensuring critical messages make it into the inbox

Clutter uses machine learning and user interactions to determine which email messages to filter and move from the inbox into the Clutter folder. However, what if you have a critical email that should not be filtered and should remain in your users’ inboxes?

Administrators can now enable specific senders or messages to bypass the Clutter filters using a defined text pattern so that the message remains in the inbox. The process uses transport rules and is similar to how spam filtering can be bypassed today. We’ve published an article on TechNet with detailed instructions for setting up Clutter bypass rules.

Personalizing your Clutter notifications

Clutter updates 2Clutter is designed to work wherever email is read—across a broad range of email applications, browsers and devices. To provide a consistent notification experience, system notifications are delivered via inbox messages to inform people how to use Clutter. Now you can personalize these system notifications by controlling which sender display name is shown and in the near future by adding your custom logo to these messages. An example of the personalized notification is included here for reference.

We’ll publish an article on TechNet with detailed instructions for personalization shortly. In the meantime, here’s the quick two-step summary of how to change the display name on the Clutter notifications:

  1. Create the mailbox to use for personalization, with the display name set correctly. You don’t need to assign a license to this mailbox.
  2. Add as the Email Address and then replace with your default domain name.

Setting retention policies for Clutter folders

Office 365 administrators can now assign retention policy tags to the Clutter folder in a manner consistent with other default folders. This allows you to manage the lifecycle of all messages landing in the Clutter folder. You can review the list of default folders that support Retention Policy Tags and now includes the Clutter folder in this TechNet article.

Getting started

These new Clutter features are all based on your feedback. We’ll continue to make Clutter even better for administrators and users in the coming months. These capabilities have started rolling out and we are targeting the feature to be available to all tenants by the end of this month. We encourage you to try out these new management capabilities for Clutter and please let us know what you think.
