Jerry Lundegaard arranges for his wife to be kidnapped, in the hope that splitting the ransom with the kidnappers, paid by her wealthy father, will enable him to finance a new business venture. The kidnapping goes horribly wrong and Jerry finds himself unwittingly caught up in a complex web of ruthless and brutal murder and investigated by a very pregnant and relentless policewoman.
