This is the story of Dick and Jane-as in the first-grade primer. Only our principals (George Segal and Jane Fonda) have grown up and married. They have an 11-year-old son named Billy, a dog named Spot, a fine house in the suburbs and a mailbox crammed with bills. When Dick's boss Charlie (Ed McMahon) lays him off from his aerospace engineer job, the family is forced to sacrifice. Jane tries to get a job-unsuccessfully. Dick tries to collect unemployment-unsuccessfully. Just as creditors start becoming pushy, Dick and Jane find themselves in the right place-a loan company-at the right time-during a robbery. Dick and Jane become determined to make crime pay, and like modern day Robin Hoods who steal from the rich and undeserving and give to the poor (themselves), they fill every day with adventure and fun-until they get caught.
