This app is designed to read Sentinel smartcards as part of Network Rail’s Sentinel system. For more information visit www.railsentinel.co.uk The app allows anyone to check their own smartcard and also allows card checkers to swipe in and authenticate their team as well as undertake spot checks and check TVPs (Track Visitor Permits). This app can be used with any Windows smartphone with a rear-facing autofocus camera. Smartcards can be checked by scanning the QR code on the front of the card or TVP, or via NFC where this is supported on your device (the app will provide advice on-screen if NFC is supported). To read a Sentinel card via NFC, hold it in contact with the rear of your device until the card has been read successfully. This app works online, accessing the most up to date information for each cardholder and validating this in real-time with the Sentinel database. It can also work offline by accessing a cache of any cards checked previously whilst online, or by retrieving this data from the smartcard itself when scanning via NFC. So without internet connectivity cached information can still be accessed. All card checking activities are uploaded to the database when an internet connection is present or can be uploaded later when connectivity is restored by re-launching the app. It is easy to use: 1. Open app (if it is the first time you have launched the app it will initially download all locations to the device, this may take a few moments depending on the speed of your connection). 2. Click the QR code button and focus the camera on the card’s QR code. Or hold your card to the rear of the device to use the NFC functionality (if supported by your device). 3. Confirm the sponsor for today. 4. Depending on the card presented, either the card itself will be shown or, if you are an approved card checker, a menu of options will be displayed. 5. Follow the on screen options (more detailed instructions are available at www.railsentinel.co.uk).
