This app takes derivatives step-by-step, showing explanations in blue and highlighting in red the parts of the expression that have changed since the previous step. It is preloaded with the basic rules of differentiation including the constant rule, sum rule, product rule, quotient rule, chain rule, and power rule. It also knows the derivatives of trigonometric, inverse-trigonometric, exponential, square-root, and logarithmic functions. Finally, it is preloaded with close to 100 rules of algebraic simplification, which allow it to cancel-out or group common terms in expressions.
What's new in this version
Version 1.10 brings minor UI improvements: 'new derivative' autofocuses the input field, and an 'edit' button has been added. Version 1.9 fixed errors in the algebraic simplification code. Version 1.8 fixed several errors in the algebraic simplification code, improved arithmetic cancellations, fixed some crashes on rare cases of invalid syntax, added a notice to consult the help page if in doubt, updated the help page slightly, and added an autofocus on the input field when the app is first launched. Special thanks go to all those who helped detect and fix bugs. Version 1.6 fixed an output display issue (sometimes extraneous multiplication dots appeared at the end of expressions) and added a few minor UI improvements (wider expression input, cleaned-up help page, disabled font controls when not viewing steps, fixed licenses width in about page). Version 1.5 added several minor UI improvements (rendering progress bar, increased margins for better readability, working hyperlinks in "about" page, developer contact button). Version 1.4 fixed an error in the algebraic simplification code. Version 1.3 fixed crashes that occurred when large expressions (containing many terms) were inputted. Version 1.2 added support for implicit-multiplication shorthand notation, e.g. "6 t sqrt(5t^2)" instead of "6 * t * sqrt(5*t^2)", "(1+x)(1+y)^2" instead of "(1+x)*(1+y)^2". It also fixed an issue where the "preview" button would hang when inputting products of several terms.
