Sign inThe AMD Ryzen 5/256GB/8GB of RAM has inherent wake/sleep issues. Went through two units with the same problem (crashing, not waking from sleep, BSOD). Despite resetting, reinstalling OS from USB stick, and troubleshooting nothing works. Very disappointing experience that overshadows great design, awesome keyboard, and trackpad. Spend more on the Intel version, the AMD version is a failed attempt.

I wanted to like this laptop since it has a great screen/aspect ratio, pleasing design, and latest intel chips. But my screen brightness is stuck at 100% so its irritating to use (esp. at night) and does not last on battery. Was told its a known issue with Surface Laptop 3 and they don't know when they will have a fix yet. Please up-vote this as helpful so that MS prioritizes fixing this issue which is harmful to my eyes! You may find yourself in this situation one day, so please up-vote this so that MS knows they need to get software fixes in ASAP.
Got the Ryzen 7 15” version in October. I use this laptop primarily for photo editing using Photoshop. This machine boots up quickly and loads apps faster than any Mac I have ever owned. Processes images smoothly with very little wait time. Works very well with my Dell 27” 4K monitor. After 27 years of using Macs I am glad I made the move to the Surface 3 laptop. Could not be happier.

I have had a lot of laptops over the years as kind of a tech junkie. Always like the latest processor. I have to say this is the best laptop I have ever owned to date. It is impressively designed. It is fast and sleek. I do wish there was an anti reflective finish on the screen and maybe an oled option but the screen is really nice. The size is perfect. I have the 13.5 inch model in black. The battery life is good and the speakers sound really good. The intel i7 10th gen processor is really good and the integrated gen 11 graphics from intel are actually very good. It is equivalent to an Nvidia mx230. There is really nothing but good things to say. It is a little expensive but it is worth it. It puts everything else to shame. Microsoft really is doing a great job with their surface line. I am very happy with my laptop. I am very hard to please. Did I say this was the best looking laptop I have ever had with excellent build quality. Go get one already!!
I was excited to get my hands on one of these machines. I purchased the AMD Ryzen 7 version. I got several bsod errors within the first couple days. There is intermittent cursor lag and other weird issues like tooltip artifacts and disappearing cursor in certain applications. Over the past couple days my machine crashes with a bosd and restarts half of the time when I wake it up from sleep mode. I've spent several hours being passed around to different support groups who all run the same steps and claim to have fixed it, without actually doing so. Avoid the amd version.. it is a lemon.
I bought the AMD 15 inch surface laptop 3 and was quite disappointed with the processor performance. 4k video playback was choppy and laggy. Exchanged it for the 13 inch with i5 processor, which provides better overall performance. If you’re going for the 15 inch one make sure you choose the business version with intel processor
I've owned the Lenovo C940, Dell XPS 4k and this laptop (Intel chip) is by far the best. Incredible touch screen that is bright. Great keyboard. Better screen ratio than normal 16:9 laptop. Plenty fast for any work related programs. You won't be disappointed. (and no...I don't work for Microsoft...it's that good).
4 defective laptops means its not luck, but flaws in the manufacturing process. Returned 4 different laptops, each time for a different defect! 1st loud fan/processor noise, 2nd one did not charge, third one had a flimsy keyboard, and the fourth one makes a cracking sound in the aluminum every time i click the mouse. I was so excited about this laptop. I turned down a macbook pro for this. It has so much potential. But when the poor build quality and hardware defects of the laptop distract you from being productive and using the product, microsoft would have failed at their mission. I’m not sure i trust this laptop will last me a while. It turns out, apple remain the kings of build quality and durability. Very disappointed, its painful. Buzzing sounds from processor drives me crazy
I was debating getting a Dell XPS 15 (2019) or the Surface Book 3. What sold me was the 3:2 aspect ratio screen. I use the laptop for mostly web browsing and work related items. The screen is so much larger that a traditional 15 inch machine. It makes a big difference. Some of the reviews complain about the speed. I have not found that to be an issue whatso ever. I bought the 500g hd and 16 mb of Ram. The build on this machine is excellent. Very high quality great keyboard. What also sold me was the weight. It is very thin and light. The screen clarity and brightness is excellent. The bottom line is this is a thin, light, high quality laptop with large screen (for a laptop) that is a great all around machine with no fan noise. Yes it is a little on the pricey side but I expect to use this surface book 3 for the next 10 years. People will go spend 1000 for a phone and have it for 3 years or less.
I would give it a 4 out of 5 but plus one just for the aesthetics. Got the 13.5 inch model. Extremely slim, extremely sleek and of course extremely powerful. Battery life is awesome, charges super fast, runs things smoothly. Though there are minor software glitches here and there but nothing you can't get fixed. Currently I have an issue with minor brightness flickering in night mode and would get it fixed soon. Windows hello is blazing fast, audio output is remarkable, no heating issues, and again, it looks stunning!
