The BBC micro:bit and Microsoft

Established: May 28, 2015

Try our Block/JavaScript editor! The BBC and partners, including Microsoft, announce the BBC micro:bit – a pocket-sized, codeable computer that allows children to get creative with technology. Up to 1 million micro:bits will be given to every 11 or 12 year old child in Year 7 or equivalent across the UK, for free. “The simple truth is, being a maker matters. Real computing, doing not just consuming, will drive a creative revolution in this country.…

Hands-Free Keyboard

Established: March 24, 2015

The Hands-Free keyboard is a project to enable people who are unable to speak or use a physical keyboard to communicate using only their eyes. Our initial prototypes are based around an on screen qwerty keyboard very similar to the 'taptip' keyboard built into Windows 8 which has been extended to response to eye gaze input from a sensor bar like the Tobii EyeX. Our goal is to improve communication speed by 25% compared to experienced…

Eye Controlled Wheelchair

Established: December 15, 2014

We envision using Eye Gaze technology to bring independent mobility to people living with disabilities who are unable to use a joystick. This project was initiated during the Summer 2014 Hackathon.  During the Hackathon, Steve Gleason came to campus and challenged us with his vision of 'until there is a cure for ALS, technology can be the cure'.  He asked us to think on how we could improve three aspects of his life: be independently…

Kinect for Windows SDK Beta

Established: April 15, 2011

The Kinect for Windows SDK beta, created by Microsoft Research, was a programming toolkit for application developers. It enabled easy access to the capabilities offered by the Microsoft Kinect device connected to computers running the Windows 7 operating system. The Kinect for Windows SDK beta included drivers, rich APIs for raw sensor streams and natural user interfaces, installation documents, and resource materials. It provided Kinect capabilities to developers who build applications with C++, C#, or Visual…

.NET Gadgeteer

Established: September 20, 2010

Microsoft .NET Gadgeteer is a rapid prototyping platform for small electronic gadgets and embedded hardware devices. F7: Refinement Types for F#

Established: May 29, 2008

F7 is an enhanced typechecker for the F# programming language, a dialect of ML. F7 pioneers the static checking of security properties expressed with refinement types. Although the original motivation was to check security properties, F7 is not security-specific and is applied in other areas, such as database modelling. The theoretical core of F7 is the typed lambda-calculus Refined Concurrent FPC, or RCF for short. FPC itself is Plotkin and Gunter's lambda-calculus with function, sum,…

WorldWide Telescope

Established: April 2, 2002

WorldWide Telescope (WWT) is a virtual telescope to astronomers, a virtual observatory of the Earth to geo-researchers, and an interactive teaching and learning tool to science educators. Since its initial release in late 2006, WWT has become an integral part of many scientists’ research platform and an indispensable curriculum companion for many science teachers worldwide. The WWT project is a collaborative effort between Microsoft Research and a variety of academic and governmental agencies. Microsoft Research is…
