This (his)story is about the establishment of media players, smartphones and tablets as new computer classes i.e. de facto, standards based “platforms” for personal computing, disrupting established businesses that evolve with Moore’s Law. The new classes can be explained by Bell’s Law–hardware, networks, and interfaces have afforded new, smaller, more specialized computing devices to serve needs for mobile and sensory personal computing. Cloud computing c2006 played an essential role to support anywhere, anytime, anything personal computing with cellular, Wi-Fi, and wire line IP networking; unlimited storage and processing. Looking back a half century, new devices are business as usual. Looking forward assures us of continuous disruption and new platform opportunities e.g. millimeter cube and million-plus computers multicomputers.
