But, you do remember that the person\u2019s area of work was technology acceptance, and that he worked at a university in Colorado. Three aspects contribute to the power of our semantic search:<\/p>\n<p>1. Author entity disambiguation, addressed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/project\/academic\/articles\/microsoft-academic-uses-knowledge-address-problem-conflation-disambiguation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous post<\/a>;<br \/>\n2. The recent increase in number of fields of study in our graph, and<br \/>\n3. The accuracy of tagging fields of study onto papers &#8212; both explained below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Field of study increase<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the past few weeks, we have increased the number of topics, or fields of study (FoS), in our graph from about 50K to almost 200K. We leveraged Wikipedia content and used graph link analysis to expand the coverage of FoS. We started with a few thousand high quality seed FoS and iterated a few rounds between graph <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.microsoft.com\/#\/search?iq=Composite%28F.FN%3D%3D%27link%20analysis%27%29&q=link%20analysis&filters=&from=0&sort=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link analysis<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> and entity filtering to help us identify more FoS. Then, we scanned through our 170 million academic publications&#8217; meta information, such as the title, keywords, abstracts, to confirm the existence of the new FoS.<\/p>\n<p>The table below shows a comparison of before and after numbers for each one of our 19 top-level topics.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<table class=\"MsoNormalTable\" style=\"width: 359.75pt; This was done with minimal human intervention. We began the tagging process by first taking into consideration metadata associated with each publication. However, publication metadata is neither complete nor accurate. Common pitfalls include but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most papers about a topic like &#8220;artificial intelligence&#8221; do not actually mention these words explicitly in the paper (incomplete);<\/li>\n<li>A large number of raw keywords from various data sources are noisy and irrelevant to the paper (inaccuracy, e.g. some websites assigned same sets of keywords to all papers published on it);<\/li>\n<li>The same words refer to different concepts in different disciplines (ambiguity, e.g., &#8220;entropy&#8221;).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We applied several state-of-the-art natural language processing techniques to tackle these challenges. For example, we extended<a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.microsoft.com\/#\/search?iq=Composite%28F.FN%3D%3D%27convolutional%20neural%20network%27%29&q=convolutional%20neural%20network&filters=&from=0&sort=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> convolutional neural networks<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> for short text classification and made it highly scalable for our 140M English papers, such that high-level disciplines such as: computer science, mathematics, artificial intelligence, etc., would be properly tagged. We also pre-trained <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.microsoft.com\/#\/search?iq=Composite%28F.FN%3D%3D%27word%20embedding%27%29&q=word%20embedding&filters=&from=0&sort=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">word embedding<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> vectors with text from more than 80M abstracts., used together with <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.microsoft.com\/#\/search?iq=Composite%28F.FN%3D%3D%27bag%20of%20words%20model%27%29&q=bag%20of%20words%20model&filters=&from=0&sort=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bag-of-words<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> for text similarity calculation, this helped to eliminate noisy tagging effectively.<\/p>\n<p>The results exhibit high accuracy, according to our observations.
