The EcoPod was designed to help facilitate city and community conversations around air quality, bridging the gap of data access as well as increasing engagement on environmental sustainability efforts and organizations across cities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"bridging-science-to-community\">Bridging science to community<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In collaboration with the <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicago.gov\/city\/en\/progs\/env.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">City of Chicago<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jcdecaux.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JCDecaux<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"http:\/\/arrayofthings.github.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Array of Things<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, and the <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/elpc.org\/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhrDF8oP_8gIV1CCtBh3kigGMEAAYASAAEgKiBPD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Environmental Law and Policy Center<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, Microsoft Research\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/group\/urban-innovation\/\">Urban Innovation team<\/a> deployed over 100 air quality sensors through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/project\/project-eclipse\/\">Project Eclipse<\/a> \u2013 creating one of the densest <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/urban.microsoft.com\/air\/city\/chicago\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">urban air<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> sensing networks in a North American city. Because of its citywide coverage, the collection and analysis of this data can monitor disparities in air pollution across space and over time. Residents can now see current air quality readings in their own neighborhood and compare their levels across the city.&nbsp;Analyzing the data, however, is only a first step. The EcoPod enables community voices to help shape, translate, and deliver the data into measurable actions for environmental justice. For residents \u2013 visualizations are immediately accessible via and interactive website.  |  Right: The EcoPod experience sharing environmental data with Chicago residents and community organizations.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"ecopod-origins\">EcoPod origins<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The concept originated from Microsoft Research\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/event\/urban-futures-summer-workshop\/?secret=bZ0oR3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Urban Futures Workshop<\/a> in 2020. The result was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Community-Engagement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">whitepaper<\/a> that explored the idea of a pop-up lab to bridge the gap between data and communities. <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"http:\/\/urban.microsoft.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Urban Innovation<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> collaborated with <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/free\/iot\/?&ef_id=EAIaIQobChMImdCbmtGi8wIViB-tBh0erwMbEAAYAiAAEgLUh_D_BwE:G:s&OCID=AID2200277_SEM_EAIaIQobChMImdCbmtGi8wIViB-tBh0erwMbEAAYAiAAEgLUh_D_BwE:G:s&gclid=EAIaIQobChMImdCbmtGi8wIViB-tBh0erwMbEAAYAiAAEgLUh_D_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Azure IOT<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wzmh.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WZMH Architects<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, and <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/nassal.companiesofnassal.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nassal<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> to retrofit a small portable trailer to serve as a destination for neighborhood residents to directly learn about their air quality. The increased demand for flexible and hybrid solutions around Covid-19 also informs its design. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pod experience is sustainable and simple. The trailer unfolds into a temporary stage and demo area that enables scientists to share local environmental data and insights about the neighborhood and city it&#8217;s currently in. It also provides a physical space for community leaders and environmental groups to host conversations with residents.
