Peer-to-peer content distribution networks are
\ncurrently being used widely, drawing upon a large fraction
\nof the Internet bandwidth. Unfortunately, these applications
\nare not designed to be network-friendly. They optimize
\ndownload time by using all available bandwidth. As a
\nresult, long haul bottleneck links are becoming congested
\nand the load on the network is not well balanced.
\nIn this paper, we introduce the Julia content distribution
\nnetwork. The innovation of Julia is in its reduction of the
\noverall communication cost, which in turn improves network
\nload balance and reduces the usage of long haul links.
\nCompared with the state-of-the-art BitTorrent content distribution
\nnetwork, we find that while Julia achieves slightly
\nslower average finishing times relative to BitTorrent, Julia
\nnevertheless reduces the total communication cost in the
\nnetwork by approximately 33%. Furthermore, the Julia
\nprotocol achieves a better load balancing of the network
\nresources, especially over trans-Atlantic links.
\nWe evaluated the Julia protocol using real WAN deployment
\nand by extensive simulation. The WAN experimentation
\nwas carried over the PlanetLab wide area testbed
\nusing over 250 machines. Simulations were performed
\nusing the the GT-ITM topology generator with 1200 nodes.
\nA surprisingly good match was exhibited between the
\ntwo evaluation methods (itself an interesting result), an
\nencouraging indication of the ability of our simulation to
