E-commerce has spawned a growing concern and
\ndiscussion about privacy. Similar concerns about privacy
\nare emerging with ubiquitous computing applications that
\nsense and report one\u2019s location and activity. But sharing is
\nas important as privacy; work and social interaction are
\nmore efficient when people share some information with
\nsome recipients. Unfortunately, commonly available tools
\nfor specifying who can see what have been too complex
\nand tedious for most computer users. We report on studies
\nof preferences about privacy and sharing aimed at
\nidentifying fundamental concerns with privacy and at
\nunderstanding how people might abstract the details of
\nsharing into higher-level classes of recipients and
\ninformation that people tend to treat in a similar manner.
\nTo characterize such classes, we collected information
\nabout sharing preferences, recruiting 30 people to specify
\nwhat information they are willing to share with whom.
\nAlthough people vary in their overall level of comfort in
\nsharing, we discovered key classes of recipients and
\ninformation. Such abstractions highlight the promise of
\ndeveloping simpler, more expressive controls for sharing
