We present a novel voice-based humancomputer
\ninterface designed to enable individuals
\nwith motor impairments to use
\nvocal parameters for continuous control
\ntasks. Since discrete spoken commands
\nare ill-suited to such tasks, our interface
\nexploits a large set of continuous acousticphonetic
\nparameters like pitch, loudness,
\nvowel quality, etc. Their selection is optimized
\nwith respect to automatic recognizability,
\ncommunication bandwidth, learnability,
\nsuitability, and ease of use. Parameters
\nare extracted in real time, transformed
\nvia adaptation and acceleration,
\nand converted into continuous control signals.
\nThis paper describes the basic engine,
\nprototype applications (in particular,
\nvoice-based web browsing and a controlled
\ntrajectory-following task), and initial
\nuser studies confirming the feasibility
