In this paper, we study whether the need for e cient XML
\npublishing brings any new requirements for relational query
\nengines, or if sorting query results in the relational engine
\nand tagging them in middleware is su cient. We observe
\nthat the mismatch between the XML data model and the
\nrelational model requires relational engines to be enhanced
\nfor e ciency. Speci cally, they need to support relation-
\nvalued variables. We discuss how such support can be pro-
\nvided through the addition of an operator, GApply, with
\nminimal extensions to existing relational engines. We dis-
\ncuss how the operator may be exposed in SQL syntax and
\nprovide a comprehensive study of optimization rules that
\ngovern this operator. We report the results of a prelimi-
\nnary performance evaluation showing the speedup obtained
\nthrough our approach and the e ectiveness of our optimiza-
